With open-pit mines excavated, the slopes will be exposed to the natural environment for a long time. Affected by factors like temperature, seepage, mining, freeze-thaw, etc., slope structural integrity and strength will gradually decline as slope exposure time extends. Besides, the development of defect structure within the rocks is closely correlated with time. In this paper, freeze-thaw cycle tests were conducted on the saturated sandstones collected from a certain open-pit mine. According to the test results, the mass density and longitudinal wave velocity gradually increased with more times of freeze-thaw cycles while mechanical properties such as internal friction angle, cohesion, elastic modulus, and uniaxial compressive strength decreased instead. The constitutive model of saturated rock deterioration was established by taking the volume of phase transition of water in microcracks as a variable. Based on the tests results and theoretical analysis, the sensitivity of the factors affecting slope stability under freeze-thaw damage was studied by Control Variable Method (CVM) and Orthogonal Design Method (ODM). It was determined that the internal friction angle and cohesion had a highly significant effect on the test results, while the mass density had a significant effect. The conclusions may play a certain role in guiding slope construction and protection.

To improve the resources’ recovery ratio and the economic benefits of open‐pit mines, the development of highwall mining is used to exploit residual coal. The design of rib pillar, formed by excavation and mining activities in intact coal seams, is crucial to the overall stability and safety of the highwall mining operations. This paper focuses on the damage caused to rib pillars by the large deformation, occurring with the application of highwall mining in an open‐pit in China. A mechanical model was established to investigate the damaged width of colinear rib pillars based on Hoek–Brown and Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. The equations for calculating the damaged width of the rib pillar were obtained, respectively, by combining the Hoek–Brown failure criterion with the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. The failure mechanism for the width of the rib pillar and the factors affecting the colinear rib pillar were analyzed in detail. The results show that the application of the Hoek–Brown criterion has a unique advantage in analyzing the damaged width of the colinear rib pillars, in open‐pit highwall mining. The instability mechanism and failure process of the rib pillars are described in combination with the limiting equilibrium method and the ratio of the elastic zone’s width to the width of the entire rib pillar.

In the process of open‐pit excavation and stacking of dump along the side wall, the rock mass inside the composite slope undergoes complicated loading and unloading effect, which are manifested as triaxial stress → horizontal unloading → axial loading. In this study, a corresponding mechanical model of crack propagation in composite slope under loading and unloading effects was established. The stress‐strain curves and deformation characteristics of rock under different stress paths were studied. A series of different tests under unloading pressure condition were carried out to study the behavior of the rock fracture under different confining pressure paths. The results showed that under the same initial stress conditions, the deviator stress required for rock unloading failure was less than that of the conventional triaxial compression. The axial deformation of rock samples was gradually increased with the increase of unloading, and the unloading easily led to rock failure. By analyzing the crack propagation mechanism under loading and unloading stress field, the analytic relation of the limit height of the composite slope with the crack morphology as the variation was determined when crack propagation occurred near the slope surface. This study provides a technical note on local damage and cracks propagation of a fractured rock mass under the loading‐unloading effects in high composite slope.

The change of physical and mechanical properties of slope rock mass in open-pit mines in seasonally frozen area under the action of freeze–thaw cycles is one of the main reasons for slope instability. In this paper, taking the mechanical parameters of coal seam and sandstone layer in the Beitashan Pasture Open-Pit Mine in Xinjiang as the research object, considering the combined effect of the frost-heave tensile stress in the crack perpendicular to the crack surface and the three-dimensional confining pressure in the crack, the criterion for cracking of fractured rock mass under freeze-thaw condition is determined by applying the principle of stress superposition and the theory of strain energy density factor, and the theoretical frost-heave stress required for cracking is deduced. On this basis, the sensitivity analysis of the fixed factors and variable factors to the theoretical frost-heave stress was performed, respectively. Finite element analysis was utilized to analyze the slope stability under the attenuation of five groups of different rock mass mechanical properties and to determine the slope angle required for the slope stability. Seven different slope angles of sidewall mining ranging from 36° to 51° are analyzed. The results of finite element analysis show that considering the timeliness difference of rock mass parameters with time, the safety factor of slope is reduced from the original 1.70 to 1.18, and 91,500 tons of coal resources can be recovered every year, with remarkable economic benefits.

In coal seam mining operations, the presence of overlying water bodies presents persistent challenges, particularly during multi-seam extraction, where water accumulation in upper seam goafs requires careful management. This study examined the Lingzhida Coal Mine, focusing on the geological conditions of the 3# seam (upper) and the 15# seam (lower), as well as the distribution of water accumulation in the corresponding goafs. The mechanism of water inrush from the upper goaf was studied, and the role of the water-resisting belt (WRB) is suggested. By utilizing empirical equations and field measurements, a method for calculating the floor fracture depth of the 3# seam and the roof fracture height of the 15# seam was derived through multi-linear regression analysis. Based on the relationship between the thickness of the WRB (Hw) and the protective layer (Hp), a classification criterion for the water-inrush risk (the likelihood of water entering the lower seam from the upper goaf) is proposed. The mining area was divided into four risk zones: high-risk (Hw < 0), medium-risk (0 ≤ Hw < 0.5Hp), low-risk (0.5Hp ≤ Hw < Hp), and safe (Hw ≥ Hp). Then, an adaptive zoning approach for water-preserved mining was introduced, considering the spatial distribution of goaf water. This approach incorporates water-preserved mining technologies, including the staggered layout of working faces, reduction in mining height, and the transfer–storage of water resources. These research findings provide crucial insights for ensuring the safe and efficient extraction of the multi-seam.

This paper is aimed at studying the influence of composition and microstructure on the Jurassic weakly cemented rock mechanical properties. No. 1802 tailentry was used as the engineering background, located in the Danan Lake No. 5 mine in Xinjiang, China. The weakly cemented sandstone compositions were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction instrument. And the microstructure was observed by using a scanning electron microscope. The uniaxial compression experiment was carried out to investigate the mechanical characteristics by using MTS mechanics experimental system, and the uniaxial compressive strength, Poissons ratio, and elastic modulus were obtained. The relationships between the mechanical parameters that include the mineral composition, microstructural characteristics, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), elastic modulus, cohesion, and friction angle of the weakly cemented sandstone and the water content were obtained. The attenuation of the anchorage force of the weakly cemented surrounding rock under different water-rich conditions was studied. The key reason of No. 1802 tailentry surrounding rock structure deterioration and roof fall was found. The model of a single anchor structure was established based on FLAC3D to study the mechanical response of a single anchor structure under different water contents and the distribution and evolution laws of bearing stress field, effective compressive stress, and anchor axial force. The influences of parameters such as water content, pretightening force, and anchor length on the preload diffusion effect of weakly cemented surrounding rock anchorage structures are obtained. The key to controlling the deterioration of the surrounding rock structure of the weakly cemented entry is to reduce the water content of the roof. The research results provide reference for the control of the entry surrounding rock under similar stratum conditions.
