The commercial application of copper bioleaching, an environmentally-friendly approach for low-grade and secondary mineral resources recycling, has increased worldwide since the 2000s. As the world’s second-largest economic entity and the largest developing country, China has the largest demand for metal resources, significantly advancing the theory and industrial technology of copper bioleaching. This paper reviews the exploration and application of copper bioleaching in China. Two typical bioleaching applications and technological processes, bioheap leaching at the Zijinshan Copper Mine and bioheap leaching at the Dexing Copper Mine, are introduced. The considerable research completed by researchers is summarized, especially focusing on the isolation and identification of leaching bacteria, the bioleaching mechanism and interface reactions, multistage percolation behavior, bioleaching system reconstruction, the multiphysics coupled model, and enhanced copper bioleaching from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs). Based on this investigation in China, key trends and prospects in copper bioleaching—such as efficiency improvement, environmental protection, and improved technology applications—are proposed.

As an environmentally compliant hydrometallurgical process, in situ leaching is extensively used by the mining industry to recover rare earth from weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore. In the in situ leaching system, the pore structure plays a dominant role in the permeability of the rare earth orebody and is one of the most important factors that influence the leaching performance. To study the pore structure characteristics of the rare earth ore, an undisturbed ore sample was scanned using X-ray micro-computed tomography. Based on the image processing techniques, visualization of the pore structure was realized and several parameters of 2D and 3D pore structures, such as porosity, pore volume, length, width, aspect ratio, and orientation, were obtained and statistically analyzed. The ball-and-stick model of large pore clusters was built by the maximal ball algorithm, and some of their detailed characteristics were obtained. The results indicate that the pore structure of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore exhibits a multi-scale and strong heterogeneity characteristic. The distribution characteristics of pores between the vertical direction and the horizontal direction are obviously different. The small pores are more prevalent in number, but they make only a small contribution to the total pore volume. In addition, the orientation of the pores is anisotropic in both vertical and horizontal directions. Furthermore, the ball-and-stick model reveals that large pore clusters are composed of several interconnected void spaces, and most of them are small and irregular.

With the rapid development of industry, landfill and other environmental problems have arisen due to the coal mining and industrial solid waste generated during coal extraction and industrial production. In this study, coal gangue was utilized as the filling aggregate, along with industrial solid waste as the principal constituent, supplemented by cement, to develop a novel type of cementitious material and address environmental problems arising from the storage of solid waste. The impacts of sodium silicate, lime, and cement on the excitation characteristics and micro-evolution of steel slag–slag-based composite cementitious materials were investigated through experimental proportioning. The mineral composition, chemical composition, particle size distribution, microstructure, and hydration products of the filling materials were analyzed through XRD, XRF, a laser particle size analyzer, and SEM. The results show the following: (1) When the mass ratio of steel slag, slag, cement, sodium silicate, and lime is 30:38:15:2:15, the compressive strength of the Cemented Gangue Filling Body (CGFB) reaches the optimum level. At this juncture, the compressive strength of CGFB at 3 days is 2.16 MPa, and that at 28 days is 4.18 MPa. (2) Na2SiO3 and lime can activate the latent active substances within slag and steel slag, generating C-S-H gel and AFt through hydration reaction. (3) As the curing time escalates, the microstructure of the filling body becomes increasingly compact, and the porosity decreases from 10.5% to 3.8%. This study not only presents a new technical means for the resource treatment of solid waste such as coal gangue but also provides powerful support for the development and application of mine filling materials.

Failure to fully backfill the goaf may result in increased exposure of roof strata, significantly raising the risk of roof collapses in mining zones and potentially causing surface subsidence, thereby endangering the safety of mining personnel. To address this issue, expansive agents are utilized to produce active roof-contact backfill (ARCB) materials, which promote localized self-compaction of backfill materials in unroof-contact areas through hydration reactions. In this study, an isothermal calorimeter was employed to measure the ARCB hydration heat release rate curves of three types of expansive agents, CaO-based, MgO-based, and ettringite-based, at dosages ranging from 6% to 12%. Hydration kinetic parameters were calculated based on the Krstulovic–Dabic model. The influence of expansive agent type and dosage on these parameters was analyzed, and the hydration mechanism of ARCB materials was investigated. The results indicate that the hydration process of grouting materials using all three expansive agents follows five distinct stages: rapid reaction, induction, acceleration, deceleration, and decay. However, increasing the dosage of the CaO-based expansive agent will enhance heat release and prolong the duration of the acceleration stage. When the dosage is 12%, the total heat release reaches 327.4 J·g−1. At the same dose, the sample doped with MgO-based expansive agent was only 254.3 J·g−1, which was 22.3% lower than that of CaO-based, and the occurrence time of the second heat release peak was earlier. In contrast, the ettringite-based expansive agent shows a decreasing trend in heat release with increasing dosage. Furthermore, the use of CaO-based and MgO-based expansive agents allows the hydration process to bypass the phase boundary reaction (I) stage and directly enter the diffusion (D) stage. Ettringite-based expansive agents still undergo three stages, but exhibit a shortened nucleation and growth (NG) stage and an extended induction stage. Additionally, different expansive agents have varying effects on the crystal growth index (n), reaction rate constant, and degree of hydration.
