Biological treatment is a key technology in landfill leachate treatment However, often its efficiency is not high enough due to the pollutants in concentrations above the critical ones. The present study aimed to investigate the adaptive responses that occur in activated sludge (AS) during landfill leachate purification. A model process with AS from a municipal wastewater treatment plant and landfill leachate in increasing concentrations was constructed. The data showed that when dilutions 25 and 50 times had been applied the structure of the AS was preserved, but the COD cannot be reduced below 209 mg O2/L. The feed of undiluted leachate destroyed the AS structure as SVI was reduced to 1 mL/g, biotic index to 1, floc size was greatly reduced and COD remained high (2526 mg O2/L). The dominant group of protozoa was changed from attached to free-swimming ciliates. An increase of the bacterial groups responsible for the xenobiotics elimination (aerobic heterotrophs, genera Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Azoarcus, Thauera, Alcaligenes) was registered. This was accompanied by a significant increase in free bacteria. The obtained data showed that for optimal treatment of this type of water it is necessary to include a combination of biological treatment with another non-biological method (membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, etc.).

The process of methanogenesis, which is in the essence of the widely distributed technologies for biogas production, is slow, has multiple steps and occurs under anaerobic conditions. These factors make the control and the management of the anaerobic digestion difficult and impose the testing and implementation of new indicators for control which are fast and focused on the activity and functioning of the methanogenic community in addition to the traditionally used technological parameters. In this study, the biogas production process in wastewater treatment plant ‘Kubratovo’ was analysed in two different seasonal situations and a correlation was made between the studied parameters for control. The complex methodological arsenal included the activities of aerobic and anaerobic dehydrogenase, fluorescent image analysis and key chemical and technological indicators. The correlation analysis showed that the fluorescent image analysis parameters (number/mean size of clusters; fluorescence intensity; area) had the strongest relationship with the biogas production. Based on these results, we propose a fluorescent indicative system for control of the biogas production technologies. It is a fast tool for assessment the effectiveness of the process of anaerobic digestion. Its focus on the activity and functioning of the biological system could contribute to the optimization of the whole performance of these technologies and could serve as a prediction tool for potential problems in the future.

Anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge generates large volumes of liquid digestate, which is often returned to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) due to the presence of pathogens and pollutants, limiting its safe reuse in agriculture. This study evaluated plasma-based post-treatment as a method to improve the sanitary quality of digestate. The liquid phase from mesophilic digesters at WWTP “Ravda” was treated for 5 min using two plasma sources, the β-device and the Surfaguide WR340 (SAIREM, Décines-Charpieu, France). Disinfection effectiveness was assessed for aerobic and anaerobic heterotrophs, fecal and total coliforms, Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp., and Clostridium sp. Physicochemical parameters measured included pH, COD, NH4+, NO2−, NO3−, and PO43−. The β-device achieved partial disinfection, with reductions ranging from 16.3% to 89.8% for different microbial groups, whereas coliforms persisted and Clostridium sp. reappeared. The Surfaguide produced near-complete disinfection, eliminating coliforms, E. coli, Salmonella sp., and Clostridium sp., and markedly reduced microbial diversity. Both treatments caused slight pH increases, COD decreases, release of NH4+ and PO43−, and rises in NO2− and NO3−. Plasma-based disinfection, particularly with the Surfaguide, effectively improves the sanitary quality of the digestate and modifies its chemical properties, supporting the potential for sustainable digestate valorization and its safe reuse in agriculture.

Liquid digestate, a by-product of excess sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), contains high concentrations of organic matter and essential nutrients that could promote plant growth. However, it also contains a significant number of pathogenic and opportunistic pathogenic microorganisms, which present major challenges in terms of its safe application. A sample taken from WWTP “Kubratovo” was treated using plasma devices. The aim was to evaluate the effect of treatment by two types of plasma sources on the content of pathogenic bacteria as well as the chemical composition of the liquid digestate. The Surfaguide plasma source demonstrated a higher disinfection effectiveness (100% for E. coli, Clostridium sp.; over 99% for fecal and total coliforms; 98% for Salmonella sp.). The β-device effectively removed (100%) the following groups: E. coli and Clostridium sp. However, its effectiveness was significantly lower for the other groups. The obtained results show that plasma treatment induces the transformation of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, resulting in increased nitrite and phosphate concentrations. The application of cold atmospheric plasma disinfection significantly improved the sanitary and compositional characteristics of the liquid digestate. The Surfaguide achieved significantly better results than the β-device, confirming its suitability for sustainable resource recovery and safe agricultural use.
