Chemically demethoxylated and Ca-cross-linked orange-peel waste was engineered as a biosorbent for Mn(II) removal from water. A three-factor Box–Behnken design (biosorbent dose 3–10 g L−1, initial Mn2+ 100–300 mg L−1, contact time 3–8 h; pH 5.5 ± 0.1, 25 °C) required only 16 runs to locate the optimum (10 g L−1, 100 mg L−1, 8 h), at which the material removed 94.8% ± 0.3% manganese removal under the optimized conditions (10 g L−1, 100 mg L−1, 8 h, pH 5.5) of dissolved manganese and reached a Langmuir capacity of 29.7 mg g−1. Equilibrium data fitted the Freundlich (R2 = 0.968) and Sips (R2 = 0.969) models best, indicating a heterogeneous surface, whereas kinetic screening confirmed equilibrium within 6 h. FTIR and SEM–EDX verified abundant surface –COO−/–OH groups and showed Mn deposits that partially replaced residual Ca, supporting an ion-exchange component in the uptake mechanism. A preliminary cost analysis ( 90% regeneration efficiency over three cycles highlight the economic and environmental promise of this modified agro-waste for polishing Mn-laden effluents.

This study optimized a homogeneous photo-Fenton process for the simultaneous degradation of the emerging pesticides atrazine and methomyl in water using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). A synthetic agricultural effluent containing 2.0 mg L−1 of each pesticide (COD = 103.2 mg O2 L−1; TOC = 26.1 mg C L−1; BOD5 = 45.8 mg O2 L−1) was treated in a recirculating UV–H2O2/Fe2+ reactor. A 23 factorial design with replication and five central points identified the H2O2/Fe2+ ratio and irradiation time as the main factors controlling mineralization, achieving up to 88.9% COD removal in the best screening run. Steepest-ascent experiments were then performed to approach the region of maximum response, followed by a rotatable Central Composite Design (20 runs). The resulting quadratic model explained 98.14% of the COD variance (R2 = 0.9814; adjusted R2 = 0.9646; predicted R2 = 0.8591; CV = 0.2736%) and predicted a maximum COD removal of 94.5% at a volumetric flow rate of 0.466 L min−1, a Fenton ratio of 12.713 mg mg−1, and a treatment time of 71.0 min. Experimental validation under these optimized conditions yielded highly reproducible removals of 94.2 ± 0.04% COD and 81% TOC, confirming the predictive capability of the RSM model and demonstrating a high degree of organic mineralization. The response surfaces revealed that increasing the Fenton ratio enhances oxidation up to an optimum, beyond which hydroxyl-radical self-scavenging slightly decreases efficiency. Overall, the integration of multivariable experimental design and RSM provided a robust framework to maximize photo-Fenton performance with moderate reagent consumption and operating time, consolidating this process as a viable alternative for the mitigation of pesticide-laden agricultural wastewaters.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the sustainability of a co-treatment system that combines Municipal Wastewater (MW) and Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) through the technique of intermittent electrocoagulation, applied as an advanced solution to improve contaminant removal efficiency and optimize energy balance. Four scenarios were analyzed: Treatment I (with a 1/7 ratio of urban wastewater to AMD), Treatment II (which includes an artificial wetland), Treatment IIIa (which introduces electrocoagulation to enhance sulfate removal and pH regulation), and Treatment IIIb (which employs a 1/15 ratio of AMD to eutrophic water). The methodology focused on calculating key sustainability indicators such as the Net Yield Ratio (EYR), Emergy Inversion Ratio (EIR), Environmental Loading Ratio (ELR), and Sustainability Index (SI), in order to assess the impact of each technology on the energy efficiency and environmental load of the system. The results showed that, although Treatment IIIa was effective in contaminant removal, the EIR increased to 0.18 and the ELR rose to 0.62, indicating a higher reliance on non-renewable inputs due to increased energy demand. However, Treatment IIIb, which combines electrocoagulation with eutrophic water, significantly improved the sustainability of the system, achieving an SI of 2.31 and an ELR of 1.22, reflecting a reduction in energy efficiency due to intensive use of external resources, but overall greater sustainability compared to the other scenarios. This research concludes that intermittent electrocoagulation, when integrated with synergistic resources like eutrophic water, can enhance contaminant removal efficiency and improve the use of renewable resources, minimizing environmental load and increasing the sustainability of wastewater treatment systems.

Although interior-point methods (IPMs) have transformed mathematical programming since 1984, the original projective Karmarkar algorithm is rarely documented step by step on reproducible engineering examples that combine algorithmic transparency with real resource allocation constraints. This article therefore does not propose a new variant of Karmarkar’s algorithm; rather, its scientific contribution is the reproducible MATLAB implementation, canonical-form conversion, and comparative validation of the original projective method against the revised Simplex method and Barnes’ affine scaling variant in two engineering settings. The case studies are (i) the minimum-weight plastic design of a rigid frame with seven candidate plastic hinge locations and six collapse mechanisms and (ii) the optimal allocation of crop patterns in the Caplina Valley (Tacna, Southern Peru), an arid irrigated system with an irrigated command area of 1253 ha, monthly labor availability of 22,239 jornales, and water availability derived from Caplina River discharges at 75% persistence. For Case I, the algorithm reached F = 1.001 in the normalized dual space, which corresponds to F = 4.251 in the original structural objective after applying the scaling factor 17/4; relative to the analytical optimum F* = 4.25, this gives |4.251 − 4.25|/4.25 = 2.4 × 10−4 after 20 iterations. For Case II, the model yielded the maximum net production value of USD 703,135.92, allocating 948.47 ha among 12 crops while satisfying water, labor, market, and land constraints. The double validation confirms the algorithm’s strictly interior trajectory, polynomial-time rationale, and transparent internal parameters (α = 0.7968, ε = 10−8), making the implementation a reproducible benchmark for educational use and for future AI–operations research hybrid solvers in regions with limited access to commercial optimization software.
