Corrosion and tribology are surface phenomena. Modifying surfaces of materials without resorting to altering their bulk properties is an effective route to alleviate corrosion, friction and wear, encountered in engineering applications. With the advancements in the field of nanotechnology, surface protective coatings with nanomaterials can be readily developed to explore their functionality in mitigating chemical/physical damage of surfaces. Surface protection enhances performance and operating lifetimes of industrial machinery components. This review presents insights on various types of recently developed nanostructured coatings, their synthesis routes, corrosion behaviour and tribological performance. It provides the state-of-the-art information on the development of nanostructured coatings, namely, ceramic coatings, metallic coatings and nanocomposite coatings with metal and polymer matrices. Biomimetic approaches in making nanostructured coatings and challenges encountered in the development of nanostructured coatings are highlighted.

In this study, magnesium composites with nano-size boron nitride (BN) particulates of varying contents were synthesized using the powder metallurgy (PM) technique incorporating microwave-assisted two-directional sintering followed by hot extrusion. The effect of nano-BN addition on the microstructural and the mechanical behavior of the developed Mg/BN composites were studied in comparison with pure Mg using the structure-property correlation. Microstructural characterization revealed uniform distribution of nano-BN particulates and marginal grain refinement. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value of the magnesium matrix was improved with the addition of nano-sized BN particulates. The results of XRD studies indicate basal texture weakening with an increase in nano-BN addition. The composites showed improved mechanical properties measured under micro-indentation, tension and compression loading. While the tensile yield strength improvement was marginal, a significant increase in compressive yield strength was observed. This resulted in the reduction of tension-compression yield asymmetry and can be attributed to the weakening of the strong basal texture.
In this study, nano-AlN particles were introduced into pure Mg matrix through the powder metallurgy technique incorporating microwave assisted two-directional sintering followed by hot extrusion. The effect of varying volume fraction of nano-AlN addition on the microstructural and mechanical properties of pure Mg was investigated. Microstructural characterisation revealed marginal grain refinement due to the fairly uniform distribution of AlN nano-particulates. X-ray diffraction results indicated basal texture weakening in Mg/0·2AlN composite. Tensile property measurements revealed an overall increase in strength properties and ductility. Among the developed composites, Mg/0·8AlN displayed superior strength (∼30 improvement) and Mg/0·2AlN showed enhanced ductility (∼80 enhancement). Under compressive loading, the developed Mg/AlN nanocomposite formulations exhibited improved strength properties without significant effect on compressibility.
