Ultrasound vibrometry can measure the propagation velocity of shear waves in soft tissue noninvasively, and the shear moduli of tissue can be estimated inversely from the velocities at multiple frequencies. It is possible to choose the appropriate model for tissue characterization from mathematical methods and analysis of model behaviors. The three classic models, Voigt, Maxwell, and Zener, were applied to fit the velocity measurements and estimate shear moduli of porcine livers with different thermal damage levels and different storage times. The Zener model always provided the best estimation of the moduli with the minimum errors in our experiments. Unlike the Voigt and Maxwell models, the moduli of the Zener model cannot be used to indicate damage levels in porcine livers directly, but the creep and relaxation behaviors of the Zener model are effective.
Thyroid imaging reporting and data system (TIRADS) is the assessment of a risk stratification of thyroid nodules, usually using a score. However, there is no consensus as to the version of TIRADS for reporting the results of thyroid ultrasound in clinic. The objective of this study is to develop a practical TIRADS with which to categorize thyroid nodules and stratify their malignant risk. A TIRADS scoring system was developed to provide more decision levels than standard scoring through the selection of the ultrasound features which include the calcification shape, margins, taller-than-wide, internal echo, blood flow quantization of features, setting of the weight, and calculation of the score. Ultimately, the accuracy of our TIRADS was evaluated by comparing with the results of current vision of TIRADS and thyroid radiologist in 153 patients who had US-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Classification results showed that the total accuracy reached 97% (100% of malignant and 95% of the benign) in 153 cases (benign:78, malignant:75). The percentages of malignancy is defined in our TIRADS were as follows: TIRADS 2 (0% malignancy), TIRADS 3 (3.6% malignancy), TIRADS 4 (17–75% malignancy), and TIRADS 5 (98% malignancy). We established a novel TIRADS to predict the malignancy risk of the thyroid nodules based on six categories US features by a scoring system, which included a standardized vocabulary and score and a quantified risk assessment. The results showed that objective quantitative classification of thyroid nodules by our TIRADS can be useful in guiding management decisions.
Human visual mechanisms (HVMs) can quickly localize the most salient object in natural images, but it is ineffective at localizing tumors in ultrasound breast images. In this paper, we research the characteristics of tumors, develop a classic HVM and propose a novel auto-localization method. Comparing to surrounding areas, tumors have higher global and local contrast. In this method, intensity, blackness ratio and superpixel contrast features are combined to compute a saliency map, in which a Winner Take All algorithm is used to localize the most salient region, which is represented by a circle. The results show that the proposed method can successfully avoid the interference caused by background areas of low echo and high intensity. The method has been tested on 400 ultrasound breast images, among which 376 images succeed in localization. This means this method has a high accuracy of 94.00%, indicating its good performance in real-life applications.

BACKGROUND: The intelligent diagnosis of thyroid nodules in ultrasound image is an important research issue. Automatically locating the region of interest (ROI) of thyroid nodules and providing pre-diagnosis results can help doctors to diagnose faster and more accurate. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to propose a model, which can detect multiple nodules stably and accurately in order to avoid missed detection and misjudgment. In addition, the detection speed of the model needs to be fast for real-time diagnosis in ultrasound images. METHODS: Based on the object detection technology, we propose an accurate, robust and high-speed network with multiscale fusion strategy called Efficient-YOLO, which can realize the localization and recognition of nodules at the same time. Finally, multiple metrics are used to measure the diagnostic ability of the model. RESULTS: Experimental results conducted on 3,562 ultrasound images show that our new model greatly increases the accuracy and speed of the detection compared with the baseline model. The best mAP is 92.64%, and the fastest detection speed is 45.1 frames per second. CONCLUSIONS: This study proposed an effective method to diagnosis thyroid nodules automatically, which can meet the real-time requirements, indicating that its effectiveness and feasibility for future clinical application.
