The major premise of the study is a recognition that competitive companies increasingly engage consumers to create business innovation. This study aims to develop a framework for analyzing consumer engagement in business process innovation and apply this framework to ICT companies in Poland and the UK to analyze how they practice consumer engagement and what differences are exhibited between the two countries. It reports on 48 case studies where data were gathered through online observation, a qualitative analysis of collected data was undertaken, and data were analyzed by applying descriptive statistics and Chi-Square test. The suggested framework deals with four key aspects of consumer engagement in business process innovation, i.e., types and ways of consumer engagement, extrinsic incentives, and ICT supporting consumer engagement. This study advances the academic research on consumer engagement and provides a blueprint for ICT companies to design and improve their consumer engagement activities.

The prosumer engagement conceptual model was considered in light of the Process Classification Framework and how results from Poland and United Kingdom (UK) survey data informed design of the combined prosumer engagement and knowledge exchange conceptual model. The desk literature method was used to review the papers in answering the research propositions. The revised model contains the constructs for supporting prosumer engagement to include sustainability and describes the flow of knowledge sharing and knowledge exchange. Knowledge exchange is the method used to capture and improve enterprise analysis of prosumer knowledge sharing. The sustainability construct includes circular economy philosophy where enterprises evaluate their product and service designs in terms of process stages. The findings confirm the need for increased prosumer engagement as enterprises strive to adopt ways of limiting negative impacts on the environment and improving ethical and responsible business practices. The circular economy is having an impact on all industrial sectors requiring them to evaluate and rethink their processes. The enhancement of the role of prosumers in the circular economy could act as a positive driver for business process changes and aid enterprises in meeting carbon neutral plans. The main contribution of this paper is to offer a novel concept that explains how enterprises can capture and translate prosumer knowledge to inform business strategy within a circular economy setting.

The model developed in this paper aims to explain how ICT (information and communication technologies) adoption by local governments contributes to sustainability. The model is empirically tested using survey data gathered from local government units in Poland and semistructured interviews with Poland-based experts. The results suggest that ICT quality, information culture, and ICT management of local government units have a significant positive impact on sustainability, whereas outlay on ICT does not have such an impact.

This study is a part research on the contribution of information and communication technologies (ICT) adoption by local governments to sustainability [1-3]. Its main purpose is to assess the levels of ICT adoption and sustainability in the context of local governments. ICT adoption by local governments is shaped by ICT outlay, information culture, ICT management, and ICT quality, whereas sustainability in local governments is shaped by ecological, economic, sociocultural, and political sustainability. This study employs a quantitative approach and descriptive statistics to evaluate the levels of ICT adoption and sustainability. The survey questionnaire was used and data collected from 118 local government units were analyzed. The research findings revealed that the adoption of electronic delivery boxes and security of back-office systems were at the highest level in local governments, whereas the adoption of EDMS (electronic document management systems), BI (business intelligence) and ERP (enterprise resources planning) systems were at the lowest level. Furthermore, the highest level of ICT adoption was specific for the information and ICT security regulations, and the standard ICT solutions developed for local governments by national governments, whereas the lowest level was specific for the adoption of latest management concepts by local governments and the alignment between information society strategy and ICT adoption. Moreover, employees’ personal mastery, employees’ creativity, and incentives systems used to engage employees in adopting ICT and enhancing their competences were at the very low level.

The purpose of the paper is to advance research on knowledge sharing by prosumers with enterprises and public organizations by examining and better understanding what knowledge about improving services, prosumers currently share and would like to share in future. The paper verifies a proposed theoretical framework by showing those service knowledge items that prosumers can share with enterprises and public organizations. The reported outcomes result from a survey that yielded responses by 171 prosumers from the United Kingdom (UK) and 783 from Poland. The research findings describe the differences between prosumers in Poland and the UK, both in their current knowledge sharing experiences and their desired future knowledge sharing. The analysis of the results shows that in general prosumers would like to share knowledge more widely than they are sharing currently. Furthermore, the findings show that Polish prosumers currently share knowledge marginally more than their counterparts in the UK. Should they be given the opportunity Poland-based prosumers would like to share knowledge more widely than their UK-based counterparts. In particular the results reveal that both in Poland and the UK, prosumers want to engage with enterprises in sharing knowledge relevant to the ordering process and the customer services process. This finding is relevant to any enterprises that may like to engage prosumers in providing feedback about their service offerings.

The paper is complementary with papers [1, 2, 3] which aims were to advance information society research by examining and understanding the information and communication technologies (ICT) adoption within government units in the context of the sustainable information society (SIS). In [4] the impact of ICT adoption on sustainability within government units was explored, whereas this paper extends these research findings by new insights into SIS measurement. The aim of this paper is to propose an approach to the measurement of two constructs shaping SIS, i.e. ICT adoption and sustainability within government units. ICT adoption is described by four sub-constructs, i.e. ICT outlay, information culture, ICT management, and ICT quality, whereas sustainability is composed of ecological, economic, socio-cultural, and political sustainability. This study employs a quantitative approach and, additionally, Hellwig’s taxonomic measure of development is adopted for multivariate comparative analyses to evaluate ICT adoption and sustainability within government units. A value of the Hellwig’s synthetic indicator can be in the interval [0, 1] where a higher value of the indicator means that the object is closer to the pattern. The survey questionnaires were used and data collected from 185 government units were analyzed. We proposed and calculated five synthetic indicators for measuring ICT adoption, i.e. ICT adoption index and sub-indexes of ICT outlay, information culture, ICT management, and ICT quality as well as five synthetic indexes for evaluating sustainability, i.e. sustainability index and sub-indexes of ecological, economic, socio-cultural, and political sustainability. The research revealed that the medium level of ICT adoption index, i.e. in the interval (0.34, 0.68], is in the largest share of examined government units (68.6%). With regard to sustainability, the medium level of sustainability index is in the interval (0.32, 0.64] and is characteristic for 71.2% of government units. Furthermore, the high levels of ICT adoption and sustainability indexes exceeding the value of 0.68 for ICT adoption and 0.64 for sustainability are indicated by 17.0% and 14.4% of government units respectively.

Aim/Purpose: The main purpose of this paper is to identify prosumers’ engagement in business process innovation through knowledge sharing. Background: In the increasingly competitive knowledge-based economy, companies must seek innovative methods of doing business, quickly react to consumer demand, and provide superior value to consumers. Simultaneously, contemporary consumers, named “prosumers”, want to be active co-creators of value and satisfy their consumption needs through collaboration with companies for co-creation, co-design, co-production, co-promotion, co-pricing, co-distribution, co-consumption, and co-maintenance. Consequently, consumer involvement in development and improvement of products and business process must be widely analyzed in various contexts. Methodology: The research is a questionnaire survey study of 388 prosumers in Poland and 76 in the UK. Contribution The contribution of this research is twofold. First, it identifies how prosumers can be engaged in business processes through knowledge sharing. Second, it investigates the differences between Poland- and UK-based prosumers in engagement in business process. Findings: The study found that prosumers are engaged in knowledge sharing at each stage of the business process innovation framework. However, there are differences in the types of processes that draw on prosumers’ engagement. Prosumers in Poland are found to engage mostly in the business process of developing and managing products, whereas prosumers in the UK engage mostly in the business process of managing customer services. Recommendations for Practitioners: This study provides practitioners with guidelines for engaging prosumers and their knowledge sharing to improve process innovation. Companies gain new insight from these findings about prosumers’ knowledge sharing for process innovation, which may help them make better decisions about which projects and activities they can engage with prosumers for future knowledge sharing and creating prospective innovations. Recommendations for Researchers: Researchers may use this methodology and do similar analysis with different samples in Poland, the UK, and other countries, for many additional comparisons between different groups and countries. Moreover, a different methodology may be used for identifying prosumers’ engagement and knowledge sharing for processes improvement. Future Research: This study examined prosumers’ engagement from the prosumers’ standpoint. Therefore prosumers’ engagement from the company perspective should be explored in future research.

Since the 1960s, a turning point for civilization related to the increasing role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in creating the modern society can be observed. The sustainable information society (SIS) entails a new phase of information society development, in which the ICT adoption by the society stakeholders is the key enabler of sustainability. One of the most important issues in the debate about the SIS is the means to measure it. In this paper, a methodological framework for creating SIS evaluation indexes is presented. In practical terms, an exemplary adjustable index for evaluating SIS in households is created based on the presented approach. During the empirical research, the presented index is used to evaluate SIS in Polish households. The study showed the usefulness of the proposed approach and confirmed the fact that it can be used to build other SIS indices.

The purpose of this paper is to advance research on prosumers knowledge sharing with enterprises and public organizations by examining as well as improve the understanding of what knowledge about products, prosumers share and would like to share in order to improve products. This paper provides and verifies a new theoretical framework depicting prosumers knowledge about products, which they can share with business and public organizations. The reported outcomes are the result of a questionnaire survey that yielded responses from 783 Poland and 171 United Kingdom (UK) based prosumers. The research findings reveal that prosumers mainly share their knowledge about products functionality, ease and intuitiveness of use, as well as a products reliability and durability, whereas they rarely share knowledge related to products design or the packaging of products. It is also found that there are significant differences between knowledge about products that prosumers share and would like to share. In addition, Poland prosumers share and would like to share various kinds of knowledge about products more frequently than UK based prosumers.

Aim/Purpose: The main purpose of this paper is to answer the research question whether the ways in which prosumers share their knowledge with enterprises and public organizations are in line with the ways in which enterprises and public organizations expect them to get engaged in knowledge sharing. Background: Contemporary consumers do not wish to be passive consumers anymore. They want to satisfy their consumption needs by products’ evaluation, co-designing, co-creation and co-reconfiguration. They can do that by sharing their knowledge with enterprises and public organizations. Such consumers are referred as ‘prosumers’. Methodology: The research process consisted of a survey among prosumers and online observations of enterprises and public organizations. A final research sample includes 388 prosumers and 90 organizations. Contribution: This work contributes to existing research on utilizing consumers’ knowledge in business and public organizations by identifying and examining ways of consumers’ knowledge sharing with such organizations. Findings: It was found that there are differences between the ways in which prosumers share knowledge with organizations in comparison with the ways in which enterprises and public organizations expect them to get engaged in knowledge sharing. Prosumers mainly share their knowledge by evaluating products, whereas organizations mainly expect prosumers to get engaged in knowledge sharing by creating and designing products. In addition, it was found that enterprises have bigger expectations as to prosumers’ engagement in knowledge sharing than public organizations. Recommendations for Practitioners: This study provides practitioners with guidelines for prosumers’ knowledge utilization, especially helping them understand which ways prosumers use to share knowledge. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers may consider the findings of the current study useful to conduct further research on customer knowledge sharing with organizations using our approach and developing own research contexts. Future Research: This study examines Polish prosumers and organizations operating in the Polish market. It is advisable to extend the research to other countries and compare the results.
