Multi-target recognition and positioning using robots in orchards is a challenging task in modern precision agriculture owing to the presence of complex noise disturbance, including wind disturbance, changing illumination, and branch and leaf shading. To obtain the target information for a bud-cutting robotic operation, we employed a modified deep learning algorithm for the fast and precise recognition of banana fruits, inflorescence axes, and flower buds. Thus, the cutting point on the inflorescence axis was identified using an edge detection algorithm and geometric calculation. We proposed a modified YOLOv3 model based on clustering optimization and clarified the influence of front-lighting and backlighting on the model. Image segmentation and denoising were performed to obtain the edge images of the flower buds and inflorescence axes. The spatial geometry model was constructed on this basis. The center of symmetry and centroid were calculated for the edges of the flower buds. The equation for the position of the inflorescence axis was established, and the cutting point was determined. Experimental results showed that the modified YOLOv3 model based on clustering optimization showed excellent performance with good balance between speed and precision both under front-lighting and backlighting conditions. The total pixel positioning error between the calculated and manually determined optimal cutting point in the flower bud was 4 and 5 pixels under the front-lighting and backlighting conditions, respectively. The percentage of images that met the positioning requirements was 93 and 90%, respectively. The results indicate that the new method can satisfy the real-time operating requirements for the banana bud-cutting robot.

The real-time detection of banana bunches and stalks in banana orchards is a key technology in the application of agricultural robots. The complex conditions of the orchard make accurate detection a difficult task, and the light weight of the deep learning network is an application trend. This study proposes and compares two improved YOLOv4 neural network detection models in a banana orchard. One is the YOLO-Banana detection model, which analyzes banana characteristics and network structure to prune the less important network layers; the other is the YOLO-Banana-l4 detection model, which, by adding a YOLO head layer to the pruned network structure, explores the impact of a four-scale prediction structure on the pruning network. The results show that YOLO-Banana and YOLO-Banana-l4 could reduce the network weight and shorten the detection time compared with YOLOv4. Furthermore, YOLO-Banana detection model has the best performance, with good detection accuracy for banana bunches and stalks in the natural environment. The average precision (AP) values of the YOLO-Banana detection model on banana bunches and stalks are 98.4% and 85.98%, and the mean average precision (mAP) of the detection model is 92.19%. The model weight is reduced from 244 to 137 MB, and the detection time is shortened from 44.96 to 35.33 ms. In short, the network is lightweight and has good real-time performance and application prospects in intelligent management and automatic harvesting in the banana orchard.

The detection of banana fruits is an important part of intelligent management in the banana plantation. To detect the banana fruit quickly and accurately in the complex orchard environment, this article proposes a method based on the latest deep learning algorithm to detect the banana fruit. Using a monocular camera, we applied the YOLOv4 neural network algorithm to extract the deep features of banana fruits, realizing accurate detection of different banana sizes. The detection algorithm achieved a 99.29% detection rate, the average execution time was 0.171s, the shortest execution time was 0.135s, and the AP was 0.9995. Moreover, the detection results were discussed with the YOLOv3 algorithm and the machine learning algorithm. Compared with the machine learning algorithm, deep learning algorithm was superior to both detection accuracy and detection time. YOLOv4 had higher detection confidence and higher detection rate than YOLOv3. The results show that the proposed method could realize the fast detection of different varieties and different maturity in banana plantations, under different illumination and occlusion conditions, and provide information for banana picking, maturity and yield estimation.

The nonlinear analysis and design of contact-aided compliant mechanisms (CCMs) are challenging. This paper presents a nonlinear method for analyzing the deformation of general beams that contact rigid surfaces in CCMs. The large deflection of the general beam is modeled by using the chained pseudo-rigid-body model. A geometry constraint from the contact surface is developed to constrain the beam’s deformed configuration. The contact analysis problem is formulated based on the principle of minimum potential energy and solved using an optimization algorithm. Besides, a novel technique based on the principle of work and energy is proposed to calculate the reaction force/moment of displacement-loaded cases. Several analysis examples of the compliant mechanisms with straight or curved beams are used to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method and technique can evaluate the deformation of beam-based CCMs and the reaction force/moment with acceptable accuracy, respectively.

During air-assisted spraying operations in orchards, the interaction between the droplets and the target leaves has a decisive influence on the retention of the droplets on the leaves and the final deposition state. Based on the observation of the final deposition effect of the droplets in the spray test, the retention state of the droplets on the leaves is divided into three categories: uniform distribution (hereinafter referred to as uniform), accumulation, and loss. During the initial interaction between the droplets and the leaves, the adhesion or sliding state of the droplets has an important influence on the final deposition state of the droplets, which is determined by the target leaf adhesion work in this paper. Based on obtaining the characteristic parameters of the leaf surface, a theoretical model of adhesion work related to parameters such as the contact angle, rough factor, and initial tilt angle of the leaf is established. Afterward, through the connection of the droplet coverage on the macro level, the establishment of the deposition state model of the droplet group on the leaf is completed. By conducting the experiment test based on the Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology (RSM), the droplet deposition states under the influence of the spray distance, fan outlet wind speed and droplet size were studied and compared with the predicted values. The test results show that the prediction accuracies of the three states of uniform, accumulation, and loss were 87.5%, 80%, and 100%, respectively. The results of the study indicate that the established prediction model can effectively predict the deposition states of droplets on leaves and provide a reference for the selection of spray operation parameters.
