In this study, we tried to form the calcareous deposit films by the electrodeposition process. The uniform and compact calcareous deposit films were formed by electrodeposition process and their crystal structure and characteristics were analyzed and evaluated using various surface analytical techniques. The mechanism of formation for the calcareous deposit films could be confirmed and the role of magnesium was verified by experiments in artificial and natural seawater solutions. The highest amount of the calcareous deposit film was obtained at 5 A/m2 while current densities between 1–3 A/m2 facilitated the formation of the most uniform and dense layers. In addition, the adhesion characteristics were found to be the best at 3 A/m2. The excellent characteristics of the calcareous deposit films were obtained when the dense film of brucite-Mg(OH)2 and metastable aragonite-CaCO3 was formed in the appropriate ratio.

N,N-diethyl-N-(2-methancryloylethy)-N-methylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide polymer (DEMM-TFSI) brush coated specimens (substrate: glasses) and a liquid ion type of polymer brush coating were investigated for their antifouling effect on biofilms. Biofilms were produced by two kinds of bacteria, E. coli and S. epidermidis. They were formed on specimens immersed into wells (of 12-well plates) that were filled with culture liquids and bacteria. The biofilm formation was observed. Also, brush coated specimens and glass substrates were investigated in the same way. DEMM polymer brush coated specimens formed more biofilm than PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) polymer brush coated specimens and glass substrates. A greater amount of polarized components of biofilms was also observed for DEMM polymer brush coated specimens. The polar characteristics could be attributed to the attraction capability of bacteria and biofilms on DEMM polymer brush coated specimens. When considering the ease of removing biofilms by washing it with water, the ionic liquid type polymer brush (coated specimens) could be used for antifouling applications. If an initial antifouling application is needed, then the polar characteristics could be adjusted (design of the components and concentrations of ionic liquids, etc.) to solve the problem.

Most structural steels have been exposed to fatigue environment with repeated various patterns of cyclic stressing. Therefore, if structural steel has been continuously exposed to repeated fatigue cycle in environment of atmosphere and seawater, brittleness of steel may increase, and the corrosion rate may also increase. In this study, the relationship between repeated cyclic fatigue and mechanical property and corrosion rate was investigated with methods such as repeated fatigue test, tensile test and electrochemical measurement when repeated cyclic stress ratio is 0.5. Elongation decreased with increasing the fatigue cyclic number, and, on the contrary, ultimate tensile strength increased compared to no repeated cyclic fatigue, which is considered to be resulted in increasing brittleness due to repeated fatigue cycle. Corrosion rate increased with increasing the cyclic fatigue number compared to no repeated cyclic fatigue because oxide film of the surface of the specimen is to be cracked due to increasing the repeated fatigue cycle, and enabling chloride ion, water and dissolved oxygen to invade the surface of the specimen, therefore, easily corroding it. Consequently, if ductile steel was exposed to repeated cyclic fatigue, it is considered that the mechanical property can be changed, and corrosion rate may be increased due to increasing of brittleness.
