Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are envisioned to provide reconfigurable wireless environments for future communication networks. In this paper, both downlink and uplink IRS-aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) networks are studied, in which an IRS is deployed to enhance the coverage by assisting a cell-edge user device (UD) to communicate with the base station (BS). To characterize system performance, new channel statistics of the BS-IRS-UD link with Nakagami- $m$ fading are investigated. For each scenario, the closed-form expressions for the outage probability and ergodic rate are derived. To gain further insight, the diversity order and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) slope for each scenario are obtained according to asymptotic approximations in the high-SNR regime. It is demonstrated that the diversity order is affected by the number of IRS reflecting elements and Nakagami fading parameters, but the high-SNR slope is not related to these parameters. Simulation results validate our analysis and reveal the superiority of the IRS over the full-duplex decode-and-forward relay.

In this paper, physical layer security in multi-antenna small-cell networks is investigated, where the multi-antenna base stations (BSs), cellular users, and eavesdroppers are all randomly distributed according to three independent Poisson point processes. To improve the secrecy performance, artificial noise (AN) aided transmission is adopted at each BS. Based on the stochastic geometry, we first derive the closed-form expressions of the connection and secrecy outage probabilities, and then comprehensively analyze the impact of different parameters through asymptotic analysis. It shows that in a low cell-load case, deploying more BSs will improve the connection and secrecy outage performance, and deploying more transmit antennas at each BS will only improve the connection outage performance. For a fixed-rate transmission, the condition under which AN becomes unnecessary is derived. We also derive a semi closed-form expression of the lower bound of the achievable average secrecy rate, which is numerically efficient to evaluate. Finally, we extend the study to a high cell-load case and adopt the zero-forcing beamforming scheme to support multi-user transmission. The connection and secrecy outage probabilities are also analyzed. Moreover, the optimal number of users maximizing the secrecy area spectral efficiency is discussed, and it is shown to be a fixed portion of the number of transmit antennas. Simulation results are presented to validate the theoretical analysis.

We study a cooperative non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) system with buffer-aided relaying. By assuming that the relay node possesses a buffer, we propose an adaptive transmission scheme in which the system adaptively chooses its working mode in each time slot. The optimal mode selection scheme that maximizes the sum throughput of the NOMA users is obtained. Numerical results validate our analysis and show that the proposed adaptive transmission scheme can improve the system throughput.

In this paper, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks assisted by multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) with discrete phase shifts are investigated, in which each user device (UD) is served by an IRS to improve the quality of the received signal. Two scenarios are considered according to whether there is a direct link between the base station (BS) and each UD, and the outage performance is analyzed for each of them. Specifically, the asymptotic expressions for the upper and lower bounds of the outage probability in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime are derived. Following that, the diversity order is obtained. It is shown that the use of discrete phase shifts does not degrade diversity order. More importantly, simulation results reveal that a 3-bit resolution for discrete phase shifts is sufficient to achieve near-optimal outage performance. Simulation results also imply the superiority of IRSs over full-duplex decode-and-forward relays.

In this paper, we investigate the uplink communication of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted system, in which an user equipment (UE) with single radio frequency (RF) chain delivers information to an access point (AP) by adopting the spatial modulation (SM). Specifically, we first investigate the transmit SM (TSM) scheme and jointly optimize the UE’s power allocation matrix and the RIS reflection coefficients to enhance the system reliability. We formulate a non-convex optimization problem to reduce the system symbol-error-rate (SER) and propose a novel penalty-alternative optimizing algorithm to obtain a near-optimal solution. Following this, we show that with the assistant of RIS, receive SM (RSM) scheme can also be performed even if the UE has only one RF chain. Based on this observation, a novel RIS-assisted RSM scheme is proposed, which can provide a low cost and complexity solution for system realization. The reflection coefficients of the RIS are also optimized for the proposed RSM. Numerical results show that the RIS-assisted TSM can achieve a lower SER than the conventional communication scheme (CTS) without SM and the proposed RSM scheme has lower detection complexity than that of CTS. It is also shown that the performance of the TSM and RSM schemes is more sensitive to the quantization accuracy of the phase of the RIS coefficients than that of the amplitude.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique has drawn much attention in recent years. It has also been a promising technique for the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication system and beyond. In this letter, we develop a novel deep learning (DL) aided receiver for NOMA joint signal detection. The DL-based receiver serves as an end-to-end mode, which simultaneously fulfills the function of channel estimation, equalization, and demodulation. Compared with the traditional signal detection method for the NOMA scheme, the proposed deep learning method shows feasible improvement in performance and robustness with the tapped-delay line (TDL) channel model, which is adopted for the 5G communication environment.
