The aim of this paper is to define and measure the relevance of the criteria for the evaluation of the inflow of goods in city centers, in order to improve delivery activities within city centers. The development of the city center leads to the grouping of numerous business operators, which results in the increase of the quantity of goods entering the city center, causing additional traffic congestion, higher levels of noise and emissions of harmful gases. In the long term, this leads to major dissatisfaction with the quality of life among city residents. Therefore, the planning of goods delivery must be in line with the sustainable development of city logistics, while at the same time considering the interests of relevant stakeholders. However, in the existing literature the criteria for evaluating delivery flows have not been comprehensively identified or evaluated by the stakeholders of city centers. In order to fill the research gap, the authors have defined four groups of criteria: technical-technological, economic-financial, organizational and social criteria. To determine the relevance of these criteria, it was necessary to use the questionnaire method to collect data from the stakeholder groups defined by the literature review. Regarding the relevant stakeholders (carriers, delivery recipients, residents and urban policy makers), the results have pointed out that the technical-technological and organizational criteria groups are considered the most relevant by the stakeholders regarding the inflow of goods in city centers.

In this paper, the authors perform a literature review of the drivers, success factors and barriers to digital transformation in the maritime transport sector. Previous research offering a comprehensive overview of digital transformation in the maritime transport sector is scarce. In order to fill this research gap, the authors have identified a total of 139 sources, mainly related to the drivers, success factors and barriers for digitalization and digital transformation. The analysis of the state of the art was performed, along with the analysis of the impact of digital transformation in the maritime transport sector using a number of cases. The development of innovative technologies (such as Blockchain or autonomous shipping) definitely fosters digital transformation in the maritime transport sector. The barriers which are slowing down digital transformation compared to other industries are highlighted, such as the lack of awareness of how digital transformation may affect the business, and the lack of standards and cooperation among stakeholders. The research findings fill the identified research gap, and can serve practitioners in shaping up proper strategies for successful digital transformation of organizations in the maritime transport sector.

This paper researches the role of the port authorities in port governance, and the role of the port authorities in Port Community System implementation. The authors provide the theoretical frameworks of seaports, port authorities, port governance, and Port Community Systems. The literature review was carried out using the Web of Science database and additional relevant sources. The authors concluded that although different port governance models exist (regarding the type of port authority), there is no evidence as to which governance model is universally preferable, as it is specific to each seaport. In addition, the research has shown that port authorities play a very important role in the implementation of a Port Community System, increasing the sustainability of seaport operations. Its implementation enables the port authorities to evolve into real digital hubs and neutral data managers, which ultimately leads to the optimization of seaport processes and more efficient use of transport infrastructure.

This paper presents an analysis of economic aspects of three selected automation innovations in electronic Transportation Management Systems: Maritime Transport Chain solution and Vessel Estimated Time of Arrival solution (related to the maritime transport) and Delivery Planning solution (related to the transport in general). The theoretical background of transportation, Transportation Management Systems, maritime transportation and seaports is provided, focusing on the economic aspects. A literature review has been conducted, in order to identify the research gap and to focus on the economic aspects of the selected automation innovations. A SWOT Analysis of the Maritime Transport Chain solution, Vessel Estimated Time of Arrival solution and Delivery Planning solution (from an internal and external perspective) is presented, adding to the existing research of the economic aspects of automation innovations in the transport sector.

In this paper, the authors perform a comprehensive literature review of the positive impacts of blockchain-based information exchange in the maritime transport sector, as well as the challenges and barriers for successful blockchain-based information exchange, considering all three aspects of the sustainability (economic, environmental, and social). The papers from relevant databases (Web of Science and Scopus) and selected studies have been used. The literature coverage was expanded by using backward snowball sampling. In total, 20 positive impacts and 20 challenges/barriers were singled out. Despite the identified barriers and challenges (such as the slow acceptance of blockchain technology in the maritime transport sector or the high implementation cost), blockchain technology possesses a definite potential to improve the information exchange between all involved stakeholders (for example, by improving the visibility across transport routes and by reducing the paper-based processes), positively affecting all three aspects of sustainability. The authors contribute to the existing research of the economic aspect of maritime transport sustainability by blockchain-based information exchange by expanding it and by researching the environmental and social aspects of sustainability.

This paper presents an overview of challenges related to information management in reverse logistics and an overview of selected disruptive technologies (Internet of Things, Blockchain, Cloud computing and Artificial intelligence) that improve information management and information flow in the reverse logistics chain. The theoretical background of reverse logistics and selected disruptive technologies is provided. The goal of this paper is to research how information management in reverse logistics can be improved through the use of disruptive technologies. The research problem results from increased costs and insufficient prediction accuracy in the reverse logistics chain.

Motorways of the Sea present a practical example of combined and sustainable transport. With respect to the present model of functionality of the transport system in the Republic of Croatia, where the development of the port and of the gravitational transport system is left to each individual port (six independent ports), and where there is no systematic approach to specialization of each port or route, the results of the analysis are not promising. The goal of this research is to explain why the current Motorways of the Sea implementation model is inefficient and unsustainable. The analysis shows that a scientific approach to multicriteria analysis, which includes the identification of all relevant factors, the analysis of the transport infrastructure, as well as the identification of criteria which could potentially affect the Motorways of the Sea system, can correctly define the optimal model for the implementation of a sustainable Motorways of the Sea system.

This paper researches decentralized data storage represented by blockchain technology and the possibility of its development in sustainable logistics and supply chain management. Although the benefits of blockchain technology have been most widely researched in the financial sector, major challenges in logistics, such as order delay, damage to goods, errors, and multiple data entry can also be minimized by introducing blockchain technology. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the current and rising trends of blockchain technology usage in logistics and supply chain management.

Seaport clusters are complex commercial systems, consisting of a large number of heterogeneous stakeholders. Therefore, it is important to harmonize their business procedures to ensure effectiveness. Harmonization implies the adjustment of differences and inconsistencies among different measurements, methods, procedures, schedules, specifications, or systems to make them uniform or mutually compatible. This paper will particularly research the inconsistencies of working timetables of various seaport cluster stakeholders, which hampers their business flow and seaport effectiveness in general. In order to analyse the inconsistencies of working hours of seaport cluster stakeholders, it was necessary to collect and summarize the working hours of various statutory authorities (government institutions) and service providers (private concessionaires) in the port of Rijeka, Croatia. Data was collected from 14 different stakeholders, and it was evident that working hours’ discrepancies exist, manifested by different and uneven periods of daily shifts, daily breaks and periods of regular and overtime work. Service providers have different shifts, and differently defined overtime (and overtime compensation). For the simplicity and transparency of seaport cluster operations, the authors recommend harmonizing the shifts, periods of regular and overtime work, and overtime compensation of all stakeholders, with the ultimate goal to increase the competitiveness of the seaport cluster and the traffic corridor as a whole.
