Object detection accuracy degrades seriously in visually degraded scenes. A natural solution is to first enhance the degraded image and then perform object detection. However, it is suboptimal and does not necessarily lead to the improvement of object detection due to the separation of the image enhancement and object detection tasks. To solve this problem, we propose an image enhancement guided object detection method, which refines the detection network with an additional enhancement branch in an end-to-end way. Specifically, the enhancement branch and detection branch are organized in a parallel way, and a feature guided module is designed to connect the two branches, which optimizes the shallow feature of the input image in the detection branch to be as consistent as possible with that of the enhanced image. As the enhancement branch is frozen during training, such a design plays a role in using the features of enhanced images to guide the learning of object detection branch, so as to make the learned detection branch being aware of both image quality and object detection. When testing, the enhancement branch and feature guided module are removed, and so no additional computation cost is introduced for detection. Extensive experimental results, on underwater, hazy, and low-light object detection datasets, demonstrate that the proposed method can improve the detection performance of popular detection networks (YOLO v3, Faster R-CNN, DetectoRS) significantly in visually degraded scenes.

Deep learning has been successfully applied to learn local feature descriptors in recent years. However, most of existing methods are supervised methods relying on a large number of labeled training patches, which are also proposed for learning real valued descriptors. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised deep learning method for binary descriptor learning. The binary descriptors are much more compact and efficient than the real valued descriptors and unsupervised leaning is highly required in many applications due to its label-free characteristic as the annotations are usually expensive to obtain. The core idea of our method is to explore the locality consistency in the descriptor space as well as to distinguish different patches while maintaining the ability to match a patch with its geometric transformed ones. We also give a theorical analysis about the role of batch normalization in learning compact binary descriptors. Benefited from this analysis, there is no need to append two additional losses on minimizing the quantization error and maximizing the entropy of each bit to the final learning objective like previous works did, thus simplifying our network training. Experiments on four benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed method is able to learn binary descriptors significantly outperforming previous unsupervised binary descriptors, even superior to most supervised methods. Especially, it obtains 21.2% of improvement on the UBC Phototour dataset, and 19.8%, 26.7%, 26.0% of improvements for patch verification, matching, retrieval tasks respectively on the HPatches dataset compared to the previous best unsupervised method.

Underwater image enhancement aims to restore a clean appearance and thus improves the quality of underwater degraded images. Current methods feed the whole image directly into the model for enhancement. However, they ignored that the R, G and B channels of underwater degraded images present varied degrees of degradation, due to the selective absorption for the light. To address this issue, we propose an unsupervised multiexpert learning model by considering the enhancement of each color channel. Specifically, an unsupervised architecture based on generative adversarial network is employed to alleviate the need for paired underwater images. Based on this, we design a generator, including a multi-expert encoder, a feature fusion module and a feature fusion-guided decoder, to generate the clear underwater image. Accordingly, a multi-expert discriminator is proposed to verify the authenticity of the R, G and B channels, respectively. In addition, content perceptual loss and edge loss are introduced into the loss function to further improve the content and details of the enhanced images. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate that our method achieves more pleasing results in vision quality. Various metrics (PSNR, SSIM, UIQM and UCIQE) evaluated on our enhanced images have been improved obviously.

Most existing ICP (Iterative Closet Point)-based 3D ear recognition approaches resort to the coarse-to-fine ICP algorithms to match 3D ear models. With such an approach, the gallery-probe pairs are coarsely aligned based on a few local feature points and then finely matched using the original ear point cloud. However, such an approach ignores the fact that not all the points in the coarsely segmented ear data make positive contributions to recognition. As such, the coarsely segmented ear data which contains a lot of redundant and noisy data could lead to a mismatch in the recognition scenario. Additionally, the fine ICP matching can easily trap in local minima without the constraint of local features. In this paper, an efficient and fully automatic 3D ear recognition system is proposed to address these issues. The system describes the 3D ear surface with a local feature—the Local Surface Variation (LSV), which is responsive to the concave and convex areas of the surface. Instead of being used to extract discrete key points, the LSV descriptor is utilized to eliminate redundancy flat non-ear data and get normalized and refined ear data. At the stage of recognition, only one-step modified iterative closest points using local surface variation (ICP-LSV) algorithm is proposed, which provides additional local feature information to the procedure of ear recognition to enhance both the matching accuracy and computational efficiency. On an Inter®Xeon®W3550, 3.07 GHz work station (DELL T3500, Beijing, China), the authors were able to extract features from a probe ear in 2.32 s match the ear with a gallery ear in 0.10 s using the method outlined in this paper. The proposed algorithm achieves rank-one recognition rate of 100% on the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Automation 3D Face database (CASIA-3D FaceV1, CASIA, Beijing, China, 2004) and 98.55% with 2.3% equal error rate (EER) on the Collection J2 of University of Notre Dame Biometrics Database (UND-J2, University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN, USA, between 2003 and 2005).

To make full use of the effective discriminative information of the non-rigid 3D model, we propose a novel multi-feature fusion method to fuse the multi-view feature and the 3D shape feature and apply it in a non-rigid 3D model retrieval. First, we compute the canonical form of the non-rigid 3D model using the biharmonic distance-based least-squares multidimensional scaling (LS-MDS) algorithm and generate multiple projective depth images. The learning-based multiple pooling fusion methods is used in the multi-view convolutional neural network to reduce the information loss and extract more effective multi-view feature. Then, we compute the wave kernel signature of each vertex and construct the multi-energy shape distribution of the non-rigid 3D model. The convolutional neural network is used for learning the 3D shape feature. Finally, we use the kernel canonical correlation analysis (KCCA) algorithm to fuse the multi-view feature and the 3D shape feature for retrieval. Our experimental results have shown that compared with the geodesic distance-based LS-MDS algorithm, the biharmonic distance-based LS-MDS algorithm has higher computation efficiency and better performance. Compared with other state-of-the-art methods, our proposed method can make better use of the two kinds of features and has achieved better retrieval results.

With the development of low-cost RGB-D (Red Green Blue-Depth) sensors, RGB-D object recognition has attracted more and more researchers’ attention in recent years. The deep learning technique has become popular in the field of image analysis and has achieved competitive results. To make full use of the effective identification information in the RGB and depth images, we propose a multi-modal deep neural network and a DS (Dempster Shafer) evidence theory based RGB-D object recognition method. First, the RGB and depth images are preprocessed and two convolutional neural networks are trained, respectively. Next, we perform multi-modal feature learning using the proposed quadruplet samples based objective function to fine-tune the network parameters. Then, two probability classification results are obtained using two sigmoid SVMs (Support Vector Machines) with the learned RGB and depth features. Finally, the DS evidence theory based decision fusion method is used for integrating the two classification results. Compared with other RGB-D object recognition methods, our proposed method adopts two fusion strategies: Multi-modal feature learning and DS decision fusion. Both the discriminative information of each modality and the correlation information between the two modalities are exploited. Extensive experimental results have validated the effectiveness of the proposed method.
