With the continued development of artificial intelligence technology, unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) have attracted the attention of countless domestic and international specialists and academics. In particular, path planning is a core technique for the autonomy and intelligence process of USVs. The current literature reviews on USV path planning focus on the latest global and local path optimization algorithms. Almost all algorithms are optimized by concerning metrics such as path length, smoothness, and convergence speed. However, they also simulate environmental conditions at sea and do not consider the effects of sea factors, such as wind, waves, and currents. Therefore, this paper reviews the current algorithms and latest research results of USV path planning in terms of global path planning, local path planning, hazard avoidance with an approximate response, and path planning under clustering. Then, by classifying USV path planning, the advantages and disadvantages of different research methods and the entry points for improving various algorithms are summarized. Among them, the papers which use kinematic and dynamical equations to consider the ship’s trajectory motion planning for actual sea environments are reviewed. Faced with multiple moving obstacles, the literature related to multi-objective task assignment methods for path planning of USV swarms is reviewed. Therefore, the main contribution of this work is that it broadens the horizon of USV path planning and proposes future directions and research priorities for USV path planning based on existing technologies and trends.

A deep reinforcement learning method to achieve complete coverage path planning for an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) is proposed. This paper firstly models the USV and the workspace required for complete coverage. Then, for the full-coverage path planning task, this paper proposes a preprocessing method for raster maps, which can effectively delete the blank areas that are impossible to cover in the raster map. In this paper, the state matrix corresponding to the preprocessed raster map is used as the input of the deep neural network. The deep Q network (DQN) is used to train the complete coverage path planning strategy of the agent. The improvement of the selection of random actions during training is first proposed. Considering the task of complete coverage path planning, this paper replaces random actions with a set of actions toward the nearest uncovered grid. To solve the problem of the slow convergence speed of the deep reinforcement learning network in full-coverage path planning, this paper proposes an improved method of deep reinforcement learning, which superimposes the final output layer with a dangerous actions matrix to reduce the risk of selection of dangerous actions of USVs during the learning process. Finally, the designed method validates via simulation examples.

Real-time monitoring of ships is crucial for inland navigation management. Under complex conditions, it is difficult to balance accuracy, real-time performance, and practicality in ship detection and tracking. We propose a lightweight model, YOLOv8-FAS, to address this issue for real-time ship detection and tracking. First, FasterNet and the attention mechanism are integrated and introduced to achieve feature extraction simply and efficiently. Second, the lightweight GSConv convolution method and a one-shot aggregation module are introduced to construct an efficient network neck to enhance feature extraction and fusion. Furthermore, the loss function is improved based on ship characteristics to make the model more suitable for ship datasets. Finally, the advanced Bytetrack tracke is added to achieve the real-time detection and tracking of ship targets. Compared to the YOLOv8 model, YOLOv8-FAS reduces computational complexity by 0.8×109 terms of FLOPs and reduces model parameters by 20%, resulting in only 2.4×106 parameters. The mAP-0.5 is improved by 0.9%, reaching 98.50%, and the real-time object tracking precision of the model surpasses 88%. The YOLOv8-FAS model combines light weight with high precision, and can accurately perform ship detection and tracking tasks in real time. Moreover, it is suitable for deployment on hardware resource-limited devices such as unmanned surface ships.

Ship Information Systems (SISs) have been one of the main research focuses in ship design and become a multidisciplinary area. With these growing research trends, it is important to consolidate the latest knowledge and information to keep up with the research needs. In this paper, the SIS and its different forms are introduced and discussed. The beginning of this paper discusses the history and evolution of SIS. The next part of this paper focuses on different fields and research areas such as networking technology, information fusion, information decision, message display, ship control in real-time SISs. A Semi-Physical Simulation Platform (SPSIM) designed for SIS research and its running effect through a new Fuzzy-PID fusion algorithm are introduced in this paper then. A brief literature survey and possible future direction concerning each topic is included

The goal of this paper is to strengthen the supervision of fishing behavior in the East China Sea and effectively ensure the sustainable development of fishery resources. Based on AIS data, this paper analyzes three types of fishing boats (purse seine operation, gill net operation and trawl operation) and uses the cubic spline interpolation algorithm to optimize the ship trajectory and construct high-dimensional features. It proposes a new coding method for fishing boat trajectory sequences. This method uses the Geohash algorithm to divide the East China Sea into grids and generate corresponding numbers. Then, the ship trajectory is mapped to the grid, the fishing boat trajectory points are associated with the divided grid, and the ship trajectory ID is extracted from the corresponding grid. The extracted complete trajectory sequence passes through the CBOW (continuous bag of words) model, and the correlation of trajectory points is fully learned. Finally, the fishing boat trajectory is converted from coordinate sequence to trajectory vector, and the processed trajectory sequence is trained by the LightGBM algorithm. In order to obtain the optimal classification effect, the optimal superparameter combination is selected. We put forward a LightGBM algorithm based on the Bayesian optimization algorithm, and obtained the classification results of three kinds of fishing boats. The final result was evaluated using the F1_score. Experimental results show that the F1_score trained with the proposed trajectory vectorization method is the highest, with a training accuracy of 0.925. Compared to XgBoost and CatBoost, the F1_score increased by 1.8% and 1.2%, respectively. The results show that this algorithm demonstrates strong applicability and effectiveness in fishery area evaluations and is significant for strengthening fishery resource management.

Fish object detection and counting in pelagic fisheries face many challenges in complex environments. Sonar imaging technology offers a solution because it generates high-resolution images underwater. In this paper, we propose a sonar-based fish object detection and counting method using an improved YOLOv8 combined with BoT-SORT to address issues such as missed detection, false detection, and low accuracy caused by complex factors such as equipment motion, light changes, and background noise in pelagic environments. The algorithm utilizes the techniques of lightweight upsampling operator CARAFE, generalized feature pyramid network GFPN, and partial convolution. It integrates with the BoT-SORT tracking algorithm to propose a new region detection method that detects and tracks the schools of fish, providing stable real-time fish counts in the designated area. The experimental results indicate that while focusing on maintaining a lightweight design, the improved algorithm achieved a 3.8% increase in recall and a 2.4% increase in mAP0.5 compared to the original algorithm. This significantly impacts scientific and rational fishery planning, marine resource protection, and improved productivity. At the same time, it provides important data support for marine ecological monitoring, environmental protection, and fishery management, contributing to sustainable fishery development and marine ecology preservation.
