The rapid and accurate acquisition of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium nutrient contents in grape leaves is critical for improving grape yields and quality and for industrial development. In this study, crop growth was non-destructively monitored based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing technology. Three irrigation levels (W1, W2 and W3) and four fertilization levels (F3, F2, F1 and F0) were set in this study, and drip irrigation fertilization treatments adopted a complete block design. A correlation analysis was conducted using UAV multispectral image data obtained from 2019 to 2021 and the field-measured leaf nitrogen content (LNC), leaf potassium content (LKC) and leaf phosphorus content (LPC) values; from the results, the vegetation indices (VIs) that were sensitive to LNC, LKC and LPC were determined. By combining spectral indices with partial least squares (PLS), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM) and extreme learning machine (ELM) machine-learning algorithms, prediction models were established. Finally, the optimal combinations of spectral variables and machine learning models for predicting LNC, LPC and LKC in each grape growth period were determined. The results showed that: (1) there were high demands for nitrogen during the new shoot growth and flowering periods, potassium was the main nutrient absorbed in the fruit expansion period, and phosphorus was the main nutrient absorbed in the veraison and maturity periods; (2) combining multiple spectral variables with the RF, SVM and ELM models could result in improved LNC, LPC and LKC predictions. The optimal prediction model determination coefficient (R2) derived during the new shoot growth period was above 0.65, and that obtained during the other growth periods was above 0.75. The relative root mean square error (RRMSE) of the above models was below 0.20, and the Willmott consistency index (WIA) was above 0.88. In conclusion, UAV multispectral images have good application effects when predicting nutrient contents in grape leaves. This study can provide technical support for accurate vineyard nutrient management using UAV platforms.

Soil salinization is the primary obstacle to the sustainable development of agriculture and eco-environment in arid regions. The accurate inversion of the major water-soluble salt ions in the soil using visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy technique can enhance the effectiveness of saline soil management. However, the accuracy of spectral models of soil salt ions turns out to be affected by high dimensionality and noise information of spectral data. This study aims to improve the model accuracy by optimizing the spectral models based on the exploration of the sensitive spectral intervals of different salt ions. To this end, 120 soil samples were collected from Shahaoqu Irrigation Area in Inner Mongolia, China. After determining the raw reflectance spectrum and content of salt ions in the lab, the spectral data were pre-treated by standard normal variable (SNV). Subsequently the sensitive spectral intervals of each ion were selected using methods of gray correlation (GC), stepwise regression (SR) and variable importance in projection (VIP). Finally, the performance of both models of partial least squares regression (PLSR) and support vector regression (SVR) was investigated on the basis of the sensitive spectral intervals. The results indicated that the model accuracy based on the sensitive spectral intervals selected using different analytical methods turned out to be different: VIP was the highest, SR came next and GC was the lowest. The optimal inversion models of different ions were different. In general, both PLSR and SVR had achieved satisfactory model accuracy, but PLSR outperformed SVR in the forecasting effects. Great difference existed among the optimal inversion accuracy of different ions: the predicative accuracy of Ca2+, Na+, Cl−, Mg2+ and SO42− was very high, that of CO32− was high and K+ was relatively lower, but HCO3− failed to have any predicative power. These findings provide a new approach for the optimization of the spectral model of water-soluble salt ions and improvement of its predicative precision.

With the advancement of precision agriculture, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing has been increasingly employed for monitoring crop water and nutrient status due to its high flexibility, fine spatial resolution, and rapid data acquisition capabilities. This review systematically examines recent research progress and key technological pathways in UAV-based remote sensing for crop water and nutrient monitoring. It provides an in-depth analysis of UAV platforms, sensor configurations, and their suitability across diverse agricultural applications. The review also highlights critical data processing steps—including radiometric correction, image stitching, segmentation, and data fusion—and compares three major modeling approaches for parameter inversion: vegetation index-based, data-driven, and physically based methods. Representative application cases across various crops and spatiotemporal scales are summarized. Furthermore, the review explores factors affecting monitoring performance, such as crop growth stages, spatial resolution, illumination and meteorological conditions, and model generalization. Despite significant advancements, current limitations include insufficient sensor versatility, labor-intensive data processing chains, and limited model scalability. Finally, the review outlines future directions, including the integration of edge intelligence, hybrid physical–data modeling, and multi-source, three-dimensional collaborative sensing. This work aims to provide theoretical insights and technical support for advancing UAV-based remote sensing in precision agriculture.

Main problem of stitching unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) thermal infrared remote sensing (TIRS) images lies that the cumulative error caused by the inaccurate alignment of image matching pairs easily leads to deformation and even failure. Few studies in the literature are reported in stitching TIRS images. For the first time, we propose a simple and robust TIRS image stitching method by exploring prior information during flight. Firstly, according to the position and orientation system (POS) information and parameter of camera, the overlap ratio of adjacent images is estimated, and the image pairs with high overlap ratio and high matching confidence in different directions are selected. Then, they are added into the alignment term of global similarity prior (GSP) model. Therefore, each image has more matching pairs constraints compared to traditional construction method of matching pairs, which greatly improves the local registration capability of GSP and then prevents it from converging to the local optimal solution. The proposed method was extensively evaluated on a dataset including to twenty-four groups of large-scale farmland TIRS images collected in four experimental areas under different crop growth periods and meteorological conditions. Compared with two commercial tools and two representative stitching algorithms, the proposed method significantly improves the local alignment ability and overall stitching quality on both qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Besides, when the front overlap ratio is reduced from 85% to 70%, the proposed method still shows obvious advantages over the related methods and commercial tools, which improves the acquisition efficiency of UAV TIRS images.
