In previous studies, parameters derived from polarimetric target decompositions have proven as very effective features for crop classification with single/multi-temporal polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data. In particular, a classical eigenvalue-eigenvector-based decomposition approach named after Cloude–Pottier decomposition (or “H/A/α”) has been frequently used to construct classification approaches. A model-based decomposition approach proposed by Neumann some years ago provides two parameters with very similar physical meanings to polarimetric scattering entropy H and the alpha angle α in Cloude–Pottier decomposition. However, the main aim of the Neumann decomposition is to describe the morphological characteristics of vegetation. Therefore, it is worth investigating the performance of Neumann decomposition on crop classification, since vegetation is the principal type of targets in agricultural scenes. In this paper, a multi-temporal supervised classification method based on Neumann decomposition and Random Forest Classifier (named “ND-RF”) is proposed. The three parameters from Neumann decomposition, computed along the time series of data, are used as classification features. Finally, the Random Forest Classifier is applied for supervised classification. For comparison, an analogue classification scheme is constructed by replacing the Neumann decomposition with the Cloude–Pottier decomposition, hence named CP-RF. For validation, a time series of 11 polarimetric RADARSAT-2 SAR images acquired over an agricultural site in London, Ontario, Canada in 2015 is employed. Totally, 10 multi-temporal combinations of datasets were tested by adding images one by one sequentially along the SAR observation time. The results show that the ND-RF method generally produces better classification performance than the CP-RF method, with the largest improvement of over 12% in overall accuracy. Further tests show that the two parameters similar to entropy and alpha angle produce classification results close to those of CP-RF, whereas the third parameter in the Neumann decomposition is more effective in improving the classification accuracy with respect to the Cloude–Pottier decomposition.
Classification techniques play an important role in the analysis of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images. PolSAR image classification is widely used in the fields of information extraction and scene interpretation or is performed as a preprocessing step for further applications. However, inherent speckle noise of PolSAR images hinders its application on further classification. A novel supervised superpixel-based classification method is proposed in this study to suppress the influence of speckle noise on PolSAR images for the purpose of obtaining accurate and consistent classification results. This method combines statistical information with spatial context information based on the stochastic expectation maximization (SEM) algorithm. First, a modified simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC) algorithm is utilized to generate superpixels as classification elements. Second, class posterior probabilities of superpixels are calculated by a K distribution in iterations of SEM. Then, a neighborhood function is defined to express the spatial relationship among adjacent superpixels quantitatively, and the class posterior probabilities are updated by this predefined neighborhood function in a probabilistic label relaxation (PLR) procedure. The final classification result is obtained by the maximum a posteriori decision rule. A simulated image, a spaceborne RADARSAT-2 image, and an airborne AIRSAR image are used to evaluate the proposed method, and the classification accuracy of our proposed method is 99.28%, 93.16% and 89.70%, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method obtains more accurate and consistent results than other methods.
Given the low accuracy of the traditional remote sensing image processing software when orthorectifying satellite images that cover mountainous areas, and in order to make a full use of mutually compatible and complementary characteristics of the remote sensing image processing software PCI-RPC (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) and ArcGIS-Spline, this study puts forward a new operational and effective image processing procedure to improve the accuracy of image orthorectification. The new procedure first processes raw image data into an orthorectified image using PCI with RPC model (PCI-RPC), and then the orthorectified image is further processed using ArcGIS with the Spline tool (ArcGIS-Spline). We used the high-resolution CBERS-02C satellite images (HR1 and HR2 scenes with a pixel size of 2 m) acquired from Yangyuan County in Hebei Province of China to test the procedure. In this study, when separately using PCI-RPC and ArcGIS-Spline tools directly to process the HR1/HR2 raw images, the orthorectification accuracies (root mean square errors, RMSEs) for HR1/HR2 images were 2.94 m/2.81 m and 4.65 m/4.41 m, respectively. However, when using our newly proposed procedure, the corresponding RMSEs could be reduced to 1.10 m/1.07 m. The experimental results demonstrated that the new image processing procedure which integrates PCI-RPC and ArcGIS-Spline tools could significantly improve image orthorectification accuracy. Therefore, in terms of practice, the new procedure has the potential to use existing software products to easily improve image orthorectification accuracy.
Segmentation techniques play an important role in understanding high-resolution polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images. PolSAR image segmentation is widely used as a preprocessing step for subsequent classification, scene interpretation and extraction of surface parameters. However, speckle noise and rich spatial features of heterogeneous regions lead to blurred boundaries of high-resolution PolSAR image segmentation. A novel segmentation algorithm is proposed in this study in order to address the problem and to obtain accurate and precise segmentation results. This method integrates statistical features into a fractal net evolution algorithm (FNEA) framework, and incorporates polarimetric features into a simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC) superpixel generation algorithm. First, spectral heterogeneity in the traditional FNEA is substituted by the G0 distribution statistical heterogeneity in order to combine the shape and statistical features of PolSAR data. The statistical heterogeneity between two adjacent image objects is measured using a log likelihood function. Second, a modified SLIC algorithm is utilized to generate compact superpixels as the initial samples for the G0 statistical model, which substitutes the polarimetric distance of the Pauli RGB composition for the CIELAB color distance. The segmentation results were obtained by weighting the G0 statistical feature and the shape features, based on the FNEA framework. The validity and applicability of the proposed method was verified with extensive experiments on simulated data and three real-world high-resolution PolSAR images from airborne multi-look ESAR, spaceborne single-look RADARSAT-2, and multi-look TerraSAR-X data sets. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method obtains more accurate and precise segmentation results than the other methods for high-resolution PolSAR images.
Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images are inherently contaminated by multiplicative speckle noise, which complicates the image interpretation and image analyses. To reduce the speckle effect, several adaptive speckle filters have been developed based on the weighted average of the similarity measures commonly depending on the model or probability distribution, which are often affected by the distribution parameters and modeling texture components. In this paper, a novel filtering method introduces the coefficient of variance ( ) and Pauli basis (PB) to measure the similarity, and the two features are combined with the framework of the nonlocal mean filtering. The is used to describe the complexity of various scenes and distinguish the scene heterogeneity; moreover, the Pauli basis is able to express the polarimetric information in PolSAR image processing. This proposed filtering combines the and Pauli basis to improve the estimation accuracy of the similarity weights. Then, the similarity of the features is deduced according to the test statistic. Subsequently, the filtering is proceeded by using the nonlocal weighted estimation. The performance of the proposed filter is tested with the simulated images and real PolSAR images, which are acquired by AIRSAR system and ESAR system. The qualitative and quantitative experiments indicate the validity of the proposed method by comparing with the widely-used despeckling methods.

Keywords: Oil Spill Detection, PolSAR Image, Self-Similarity Parameter, Polarimetric Features, Look-alikes, Remote Sensing The ocean oil spills cause serious damage to the marine ecosystem. Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an important mean for oil spill detections on sea surface. The major challenge is how to distinguish oil slicks from look-alikes effectively. In this paper, a new parameter called self-similarity parameter, which is sensitive to the scattering mechanism of oil slicks, is introduced to identify oil slicks and reduce false alarm caused by look-alikes. Self-similarity parameter is small in oil slicks region and it is large in sea region or look-alikes region. So, this parameter can be used to detect oil slicks from look-alikes and water. In addition, evaluations and comparisons were conducted with one Radarsat-2 image and two SIR-C images. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the self-similarity parameter for oil spill detection.
