Gregorio Varela Moreiras is a professor of nutrition and bromatology at the Sant Pau-CEU University, Director of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences, and head of the research group on “Nutrition and Food Sciences”. He is President of the Spanish Foundation for Nutrition (FEN), ex-president of the Spanish Society of Nutrition (SEN), academic of the Royal Academy of Gastronomy, and founding member of the Spanish Academy of Nutrition and Food Sciences. With a Ph.D. in pharmacy, he made his postdoctoral stay at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Ageing at TUFTS University in Boston. Subsequently, he moved to the Biomedical Research Institute (CSIC) in Madrid, and then developed his interests at the University of Burgos, until his definitive incorporation at the CEU Sant Pau University. He has received the order of Alfonso X the Wise, the international prize of HIPPOCRATES Medical Research on Human Nutrition, the Dr. Marañón Award for the best scientific work in the food field of the Royal Spanish Academy of Gastronomy, and The Ángel Herrera Award 2008 for the best research work.
