Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease which is characterized by recurrent attacks of fever and peritonitis, pleuritis, arthritis, or erysipelas-like skin disease. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a sign of platelet activation. There are limited studies in the literature about MPV levels in FMF patients. We aimed to investigate MPV levels during the attack period (group 1) and attack-free periods (group 2) in FMF patients, and to compare them with healthy controls (group 3). The study consisted of the data of: 60 group 1 patients, 120 group 2 patients, and 75 group 3 patients. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, white blood cell count, platelet count, and MPV levels were retrospectively recorded from patient files. Statistical analyses showed that MPV was significantly lower in FMF patients both in group 1 and group 2 than in group 3 (p = 0.004, p = 0.002, respectively); however, there was no difference among group 1 and group 2 in patients with FMF (p = 0.279). The mean platelet count of group 1 was higher than that of group 3 (p = 0.010). In conclusion, this study results suggested that MPV level did not increase on the contrary, it decreased in patients with FMF both in group 1 and/or group 2 when compared to group 3. It was concluded that the lower MPV level was an expected result of secondary thrombocytosis in FMF patients.
Background: Cancer antigen 125 (CA‐125) is a tumor marker used for the diagnosis and monitoring of ovarian carcinoma. It can also be elevated in endometriosis, inflammations, and in nongynecological malignancies. Up to date, serum CA‐125 levels in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) have not been studied before. Aim: To assess the levels of CA‐125 in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Methods: Serum levels of CA‐125 were investigated in 68 cases with UC (male/female: 47/21), 32 CD (male/female: 21/11), and 31 healthy controls (male/female: 16/15). Levels of CA‐125 were also compared among UC patients according to lesion location, severity, and activity of CD. Results: Serum CA‐125 levels were 17.29±24.50 U/ml, 15.56±20.74 U/ml, and 8.85±2.62 U/ml in patients with UC, CD, and healthy controls, respectively. Serum CA‐125 levels were significantly higher in UC compared to control group (P=0.001). Serum CA‐125 levels were higher in CD patients compared to control group but there was no significance (P=0.087). Serum CA‐125 levels were higher in pancolitis compared to distal type and left‐sided UC. Conclusions: Our data suggest that serum CA‐125 levels may be increased in patients with IBDs. J. Clin. Lab. One of the deadliest diseases is the SARS-CoV-2 virus, today. The rate of spread of this virus is very high. Momordica Charantia extracts studied for this virus. The inhibitory activities of 96 components in the extract of Momordica Charantia were compared against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Molecular docking method was initially used for this comparison. ADME/T analysis of the inhibitors with the highest inhibitory activity was performed using the results obtained from these calculations. The molecular docking calculations of the molecule with the highest inhibitory activity were tried to be supported by MM-PBSA calculations. The molecular mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann surface binding free energy values of area (MM-PBSA) calculations study interactions between inhibitor molecules and SARS-CoV-2 virus proteins at 100 ps. Finally, the molecules with the highest inhibitory activity were compared with FDA approved drugs. As a result of the made molecular docking calculations, the docking score parameter is Karaviloside III with -9.36, among the extracts of momordica charantia, which has the most negative value. The Gibbs free energy value of the Karaviloside III against 6X6P protein with the best docking score value was calculated. This value is -477143.61±476.53. As a result of the comparison of inhibitory activities of extracts of Momordica charantia against SARS-CoV-2 virus, it has been observed that the Karaviloside III molecule has higher inhibitory activity than other melodies and FDA drugs.

Background/Aims: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are increasingly prevalent and challenging globally. Data regarding IBD frequency and severity between Europe and Asia are needed. The aim was to investigate the trend of IBD in Türkiye during the last 3 decades. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted retrospectively at 14 centers in Türkiye between June 1993 and March 2024. Results: Over 30 years, 4308 patients, of whom 2507 (58.2%) had ulcerative colitis (UC) and 1717 (39.9%) had Crohn’s Disease (CD), were included in the study. The overall median age at the onset of IBD was 34.43 (25.28-45.64) years; the age at onset of IBD was younger in CD compared to UC (32.72 vs. 35.52 years respectively, P < .001). The peak age onset range was 28-32 years in CD, whereas 23-27 years in UC. Overall, 2526 (58.6%) patients were male. The most common location was left-sided colitis in UC patients (45.1%), followed by extensive colitis (31.2%), and proctitis (23.7%), while ileal involvement in CD patients (45.2%), afterward ileocolonic (409%), and colonic (13.5%). Both illnesses are becoming increasingly prevalent. The UC/CD ratio tends to decrease over time. During the study period, 1577 (36.6%) patients received biologic treatment. During the study period, 418 (24.3%) underwent resective surgery for CD and 88 (3.5%) total colectomy for UC; the major abdominal surgery has declined over time. Conclusion: The frequency and characteristic features of IBD in Türkiye appear to be between Europe and Asia. Over time, while the usage of biologic therapy and the rate of CD have increased, the frequency of surgery has decreased. Cite this article as: Durak MB, Cagin YF, Balkan A, et al. Eight boron compounds are investigated in this study. Structural and spectral characterization is done at M062X/6-311G(d) level in the water. Active sites of these compounds are determined using contour plots of frontier molecular orbital, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps and MEP contour.. Electrophilic and nucleophilic attack regions are determined. We aimed to determine whether boron compounds inhibitor used in the treatment of omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. Since SARS-CoV-2 is a worldwide health problem, anti-viral properties of studied boron compounds were investigated using in silico techniques. Bioavaliability analyses were performed using ADME and p450. It was found that compound B7 can be good drug candidate against omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2.
