The utilization of thermoplastics is extensively prevalent in modern industrial sectors owing to their distinctive mechanical features. Friction stir welding is recognized as a distinctive joining technology that addresses the weaknesses of heat-induced fusion welding. This friction-stirred solid-state welding technology can be effectively employed to join various difficult-to-weld polymeric materials. This paper examines the weldability of friction stir butt welding utilizing a cylindrical tapered threaded tool on a 3 mm thick Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Polycarbonate (PC) polymers. The impact of tool rotational speed (800 and 1200 rpm) and tool traverse speed (10 mm/min to 50 mm/min) on the joint strength of welded samples has been analyzed. The maximum joint efficiency achieved is 52.71% for ABS while using a rotational speed of 1200 RPM and a traverse speed of 10 mm/min. For PC, the maximum joint efficiency is 54% with a rotational speed of 800 RPM and a traverse speed of 40 mm/min. The joint efficiency of polymer is significantly improved as a result of the effective heat distribution and fusion during the welding. The tensile strength of ABS polymer decreases as the traverse speed increases from 10 mm/min to 50 mm/min at both rotational speeds of 800 and 1200 rpm. However, the tensile strength of PC polymer exhibits fluctuations as the traverse speed increases from 10 mm/min to 50 mm/min. This behavior may be attributed to the fluctuating heating and cooling conditions that occur during the welding process at varying rotation and traverse speeds. In contrast to the polymeric base material, the weld zone demonstrated a lower hardness value. The heated tool induces material softening, which results in a reduction in hardness. An examination of alterations in the microstructure of the weld zone was conducted using scanning electron microscopy and stereo microscopy. The observed microstructures were applied to determine the reasons for the decrease in strength. The micrographs illustrate the formation of a fragmentation, attributable to the residual stress generated during the rapid cooling of the liquid polymer. Moreover, a highly increased temperature or traverse speed may result in the formation of voids at the joint interface.
This paper presents optimization of peak temperatures achieved during friction stir welding (FSW) of Al-6061-T6 alloys. This research work employed a novel approach by investigating the effect of FSW welding process parameters on peak temperatures through the implementation of finite element analysis (FEA), the Taguchi method, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and machine learning (ML) algorithms. COMSOL 6.0 Multiphysics was used to perform FEA to predict peak temperatures, incorporating seven distinctive welding parameters: tool material, pin diameter, shoulder diameter, tool rotational speed, welding speed, axial force, and coefficient of friction. The influence of these parameters was investigated using an L32 Taguchi array and analysis of variance (ANOVA), revealing that axial force and tool rotational speed were the most significant parameters affecting peak temperatures. Some simulations showed temperatures exceeding the material’s melting point, indicating the need for improved thermal control. This was achieved by using three machine learning (ML) algorithms, i.e., Logistic Regression, k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN), and Naive Bayes. A dataset of 324 data points was prepared using a factorial design to implement these algorithms. These algorithms predicted the welding conditions where the temperature exceeded the melting temperature of Al-6061-T6. It was found that the Logistic Regression classifier demonstrated the highest performance, achieving an accuracy of 98.14% as compared to Naive Bayes and k-NN classifiers. These findings contribute to sustainable welding practices by minimizing excessive heat generation, preserving material properties, and enhancing weld quality.

Crack growth is a major cause of failure in structures that are made using cement and concrete. Healing of these cracks can increase the life span of structures. In the present study micro-organism based self-healing of structures is studied. A commonly occurring micro-organism bacterium called Bacillus Subtilis, is used in the manufacturing of cement mortar blocks as a self-healing agent for cement mortar blocks, with the use of Calcium Lactate as feed for bacteria. In the first step, colonies of Bacillus Subtilis were grown and added with calcium lactate to produce a solution. The solution was then kept for one week to observe the metabolic product of Bacillus Subtilis. It was found that the bacterial product was composed of CaCO3 and thus the bacteria is suitable to be used as self-healing agent. Self-healing cement mortar blocks were made by adding Bacteria and Calcium Lactate with usual ingredients of cement mortar, i.e. cement, sand and water. It was found that the bacteria were also effective in converting Calcium Lactate to Calcium Carbonate, when mixed in cement mortar blocks. It was observed that the pores of cement mortar blocks were filled by Calcium Carbonate and that cracks get healed by the deposition of Calcium Carbonate in the cracks. Cement mortar blocks, with and without healing agent, were made to compare the effect of curing time. The samples were tested after seven, fourteen and twenty-eight days to compare the effect of healing agent. All the samples with the healing agent showed a higher compressive strength in comparison with the samples that were made without healing agent. Different percentages of Calcium Lactate, ranging from 1-7% were also used to find the best composition for future use. It was found that the compressive strength was increasing up to 5% while above 5% the increase was marginal thus it is proposed that Calcium Lactate should be used in between 5-7 % to reduce the cost of self-healing cement in construction industry.

Cu2O (Cuprous Oxide) is usually produced using expensive electrodes such as platinum, graphite, etc. In the present study, it is shown that Cu2O nanostructures can be synthesized by electrolysis using copper as both anode and cathode. In the present study, the effect of electrolyte pH on the morphology of the Cu2O nanostructures was studied. For this, the copper electrodes of 99.99% purity with 3x3x0.3 mm dimensions were dipped in the electrolytes of simple distilled and double distilled water and connected with the external power source. The synthesized products were analyzed using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscope) and UV spectroscope. Results showed that Cu2O nanostructures of 67 and 150 nm size were developed when the pH of electrolyte was 6.4 and 5.7 respectively, otherwise not. From the course of experiments conducted in this work it is noted that pH play vital role in the production of Cu2O nanoparticles using simple electrolysis technique.
