Stump appendicitis is inflammation of remnant appendix tissue due to incomplete removal of the appendix. Due to appendectomy history, stump appendicitis diagnosis is usually delay and that can cause increase morbidity. Medical records of patients who had surgery for acute appendicitis at a single center from 2008 to 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. During the evaluation of medical records, patients that had a previous operation for acute appendicitis or had “stump appendicitis” as an exploratory finding in operation notes were included. Appendectomy was performed in 3130 patients (2630 open surgeries and 380 laparoscopic surgeries). Stump appendicitis was diagnosed in five patients (0.15%). The appendectomies had been performed 4, 5, 7, 7, and 11 years previously. Mean time taken for surgery was 36 h after symptoms began. Open surgery was performed in three patients, laparoscopic procedures in others. Awareness of stump appendicitis before radiological examinations may facilitate accurate diagnosis and decrease the duration of the decision-making process, leading to decreased morbidity.

Background. Many scoring systems have been developed for acute appendicitis, which is the most common emergent disorder in surgical practice. Considering the physiological changes and chronic diseases occurring with advancing age, an applied scoring system may not produce the same score in similar patients in all age groups. Objectives. We aimed to compare the predictive values of scoring systems in different age groups. Methods. In this prospective study, the patients operated on in our clinic with a prediagnosis of acute appendicitis between March 2020 and March 2021 were included. We divided them into three age groups as 1845 years (group 1), 4665 years (group 2), and >65 years (group 3). We compared the scores of the nine acute appendicitis scoring systems most commonly used in the literature for these age groups. Results. A total of 203 patients were included in our study. The Alvarado scoring system yielded the most accurate results for group 1, whereas the FenyoLinberg scoring system was the most accurate system for group 2 and the Eskelinen scoring system for group 3. Conclusion. Age should be considered as a major parameter during the selection of the scoring system to be applied for patients with prediagnosis of acute appendicitis. Our study revealed the Alvarado and the FenyoLindberg scoring systems as the most accurate systems for the differential diagnosis of appendicitis in the 1845 and 4665 years age groups, respectively. Although we found the Eskelinen scoring system as the most accurate one in the >65 years age group, the confidence intervals indicated that it may not be appropriate for use alone in this group.

Aim The aim of this study was to determine the presence of inflammation in asymptomatic diverticular disease using inflammatory parameters and to evaluate the relationship between inflammatory parameters and the degree of complication in symptomatic diverticular diseases. Material and Method Clinical and dermographic findings of patients with acute diverticulitis, patients with diverticulosis and healthy volunteers were compared. Results A healthy control group of 31 people, 40 patients with diverticulosis and 32 patients with acute diverticulitis were included in the study. Thirty-one (43.11%) patients were female and 41 (56.9%) male. RDW and MLR were significantly higher in patients with asymptomatic diverticulosis compared to the control group (p=0.02, p=0.00, respectively). NLR and SII were significantly different among Hinchey groups (p<0.01, p<0.01, respectively). Conclusion We concluded that there may be a mild inflammation in asymptomatic diverticulosis patients, and NLR and SII can provide information about the degree of acute diverticulitis. Keywords diverticulosis, inflammation, acute diverticulitis
