Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of rotavirus and adenovirus in patients who applied with the complaint of acute gastroenteritis to the emergency department of our tertiary health care provider hospitals. Methods: 1712 patients with the complaint of acute gastroenteritis were included in the study and the study was done retrospectively from patient records. Results: Stool (faeces) samples have been sent from 1712 patients who applied to emergency services with the complaint of acute gastroenteritis for 3 years. Of these, 17.5% (n=301) rotavirus antigen and 3.5% (n=61) adenovirus antigen were detected as positive. It was observed that 56% (n=203) of the positive cases were male and 44% (n=159) were female. The rotavirus antigen was statistically significantly higher in the 0-4 age group than the other age groups. Conclusion: Acute gastroenteritis is an important health problem in children. Especially, the frequency of rotavirus was observed to be higher in children under 4 years of age and in this age group patients the use of rotavirus rapid diagnostic tests rather than viral culture methods may be helpful to early diagnosis thus to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use.
Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2) has caused an infectious disease that affects multiple organs. Recently, the cardiological effects of the virus have also been striking. To the best of our knowledge, there are no SARS CoV-2 positive paediatric cases reported with sinus bradycardia in the literature. Case presentation A 14-year-old male patient presented with complaints of abdominal pain and fatigue. The heart rate of the patient, whose grandmother was found to be positive for SARS CoV-2 test, ranged between 43 and 60/min, the heart sounds were normal. There was no known history of cardiological disorder in the patient and his family. His laboratory findings were; normal Troponin I, elevated C Reactive protein, normal Haemoglobin, normal CK-MB, mildly elevated D-Dimer. Electrocardiography of the patient was evaluated as sinus bradycardia. There was no pathological finding in his echocardiography. The SARS CoV-2 PCR test was positive. In his follow-up, the heart rate decreased to 50 beats per minute while awake and 43 beats per minute while sleeping. The patient had a bradycardic course until the 4th day of hospitalisation. Control SARS CoV-2 PCR test was negative. He was discharged on the 8th day. Conclusion It's understood that SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for multiple cardiac manifestations. The most common bradyarrhythmia associated with SARS CoV-2 reported worldwide is sinus bradycardia and complete heart block. In order to contribute to the literature, we present a 14-year-old paediatric patient with positive SARS CoV-2 PCR test who has normal cardiac tests and sinus bradycardia.

Aim: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a life-threatening emergency that causes airway obstruction. This study aims to investigate the amount of awareness there is about the life-threatening emergency FBA among Turkish mothers who are full-time carers of their children, and to provide these mothers with information regardless of their answers. Material and Method: 1034 mothers with children between 6 months and 5 years old were included in the study. Participants were asked to provide their sociodemographic information and to answer questions about FBA. Results: The majority of the mothers were aged between 21–30 years old (48.94%), primary school graduates (34.62%), and housewives (66.05%). The families had two to three children in general. Most of the mothers (65.73%) had not seen a child experiencing FBA. If we compared the mothers according to level of education, “1–3 years” was mostly selected by the university graduates (66.19%) as the age group in which FBA was most prevalent. As the level of education increased, the awareness regarding FBA’s potential lethality, the importance of preventive measures, the importance of first response, and sources for correct information on how to intervene were seen to increased. While most of the participants (72.74%) stated that they would take the child to the emergency room in the event of FBA. Conclusion: The most important step in reducing the morbidity and mortality of FBA is prevention. The easiest way to prevention is education of parents and the raising of public awareness.
Objective: Down Syndrome (DS) is defined as chromosome 21 trisomy and associated with cardiovascular system diseases. We aimed to study inherited thrombophilia genes (MTHFR A1298C, MTHFR C677T, Factor II G20210A, Factor V Leiden G1691A, Factor V Cambridge G1091C, Factor XIII, APOB, ITGB3, FVHR2, FGB, PAI-1 and ACE) in patients with DS. Materials and Methods: A total of 53 patients with DS (32 male and 21 female) were included in the study. Demographical, laboratory and clinical features of cases were recorded. 12-lead Electrocardiogram (ECG), transthoracic echocardiography and the inherited thrombophilia genes were evaluated. Results: The clinical and developmental defect findings of the patients were high. The 39.6% of patients had both heterozygous MTHFR C677T and heterozygous MTHFR A1298C carriers, the 18.9% of patients had homozygous MTHFR A1298C carriers, the 17% of patients had heterozygous Factor V Leiden G1691A carriers, the 43.4% of patients had 4G/4G carriers, the 34% of patients had 4G/5G variation carriers for PAI, the 22.7% of patients had heterozygous FactorXIII carriers, the 49.1% of patients had ins/del carriers and the 37.7% of patients had del/del variation carriers for ACE. All patients had at least one of the homozygous and/or compound heterozygous variations for the inherited thrombophilia. Conclusions: The patients with DS have a high risk for thrombosis-related cardiovascular system diseases. It may be said that the average life expectancy of individuals with DS may be increased by precautions (related to medical, social, lifestyle, etc.) to reduce complications associated with hereditary thrombophilia.

Introduction: In mothers with fever complaint who applied to Duzce University Faculty of Medicine Research and Practice Hostipal, defining attitude and behaviours and general knowledge levels about fever are aimed in this study. Methods: 230 patients who were admitted to pediatric emergency service and general pediatric outpatient clinics from February to June 2017 were included in the study. Questionnaires with 26 questions were evaluated in this study. Descriptive features, chi-square test and one-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni’s post-hoc comparisons tests were performed in all statistical analyzes. Results: It was learned that 79.1% of the mothers were placing the thermometers under the armpit during measurement. Most of the mothers picked the normal body temperature as 35.5-36.4 ° C (57.8%). 74.8% of the mothers considered fever as a disease and 98.7% of the mothers thought that fever was harmful. Most of the mothers were considering the advices of doctors on reducing fever of children (48.7%). The most common intervention to reduce fever was to shower with warm water (73.5%). The most preferred antipyretic was paracetamol (76.1%). As the education levels increased, rates of showering with warm water and taking out the children's clothes were increasing significantly (p=0.027, p=0.025, respectively). Conclusion: In this study, it was seen that the mother's general knowledge about fever was inadequate and there were occasionally wrong attitudes and behaviors in order to reduce fever. We think that detailed information about fever given to the families by physicians will prevent unnecessary applications in this area.
