From 2011 to 2019, I served as President of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica. Prior to that, I held the positions of Executive Director of the Center for Tropical Sciences from 1997 to 2002, and Director of the School of Forestry Engineering for three terms.
As President of Tecnologico, I led its transformation with a strategy to increase enrollment, open new campuses, strengthen existing ones with new infrastructure and equipment, introduce new undergraduate and graduate programs, promote the training of new doctors, improve research and extension, achieve 100% accreditation of our undergraduate and graduate programs, obtain TEC accreditation under the French model (HCERES), position TEC at the top of the international rankings of scientific and technological research universities in Central America, and design and implement environmentally sustainable campuses.
My research has been primarily focused on generating knowledge and developing pilot projects and tools to facilitate technical and political decisions for the proper planning and management of natural resources. Specifically, I have utilized hydrological models to simulate the impact of land-use changes on the water cycle, erosion, and sedimentation in watersheds, remote sensing, and GIS to study the dynamics of land-use change and forest cover, forest and wetland ecology and hydrology, conservation biology, and the effects of climat
