Wireless powered communication technology has a great potential to power low-power wireless sensor networks and Internet of Things (IoT) for real-time applications in future 5G networks, where age of information (AoI) plays a very important performance metric. This paper studies the system average AoI of a wireless powered network, where a wireless-powered user harvests energy from a wireless power source (WPS) and then transmits data packets to its access point (AP) by using the harvested energy. The user generates data packets with some probability and adopts the first-come-first-served (FCFS) service policy. For such a system, by using the queuing theory and the probability models, we derive a closed-form expression of the system average AoI. We also formulate an optimization problem to minimize the AoI by optimizing the data packet generating probability, and find its solution by simple calculation and search. Simulation results demonstrate the correctness of our obtained analytical results. It also shows that, when the total distance of the two hops is fixed, the system average AoI increases linearly with the increment of the distance of the first hop, and a smaller data packet generating probability should be selected to match a bigger first-hop distance for achieving a smaller system average AoI. Moreover, a smaller data packet size also contributes to a smaller system average AoI.

The cloud computing and microsensor technology has greatly changed environmental monitoring, but it is difficult for cloud-computing based monitoring system to meet the computation demand of smaller monitoring granularity and increasing monitoring applications. As a novel computing paradigm, edge computing deals with this problem by deploying resource on edge network. However, the particularity of environmental monitoring applications is ignored by most previous studies. In this paper, we proposed a resource allocation algorithm and a task scheduling strategy to reduce the average completion latency of environmental monitoring application, when considering the characteristic of environmental monitoring system and dependency among task. Simulations are conducted, and the results show that compared with the traditional algorithms. With considering the emergency task, the proposed methods decrease the average completion latency by 21.6% in the best scenario.

This paper analyzes outage probability and reliable throughput performance of a multi-user wireless-powered communication network-simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (WPCN-SWIPT) network with the logistic function-based (LG) nonlinear energy-harvesting (EH) model in Nakagami-m fading. Power-splitting (PS) receiver architecture is considered. The closed-form expressions of the system outage probability and the system reliable throughput are derived, and then the corresponding asymptotic expressions are also provided to achieve simpler calculation in the high-transmit power scenarios. Simulation results demonstrate the correctness of our derived analytical results and show that the systems under the LG nonlinear and linear EH models have very different performance behaviors. Moreover, since the LG nonlinear EH model is closer to the features of practical EH circuit than the linear one, using the LG nonlinear EH model can avoid the false output results of the system performance evaluation.

This paper studies a distributed antenna system (DAS) network with radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting (EH) technology where the distributed antenna ports (DAPs) transmit energy and information to multiple users simultaneously. The time division multiple access (TDMA) protocol is adopted, so for each time slot is allowed to receive information, while the rest of the users harvest energy. In order to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE), subject to the EH requirements and data rate requirements of the users, the transmission time and power assignment are jointly optimized. In order to deal with this non-convex problem, based on Dinkelbach theory and the block-coordinate descent (BCD) scheme, an efficient algorithm is designed to obtain the global optimal solution. Then, simulation results are presented to show that the proposed method achieves much higher system EE compared with benchmark methods. With the increase of the user’s minimum information rate, the system EE decreases rapidly.

This paper studies the optimal design of the fog computing assisted wireless powered network, where an access point (AP) transmits information and charges an energy-limited sensor device with Radio Frequency (RF) energy transfer. The sensor device then uses the harvested energy to decode information and execute computing. Two candidate computing modes, i.e., local computing and fog computing modes, are considered. Two multi-objective optimization problems are formulated to minimize the required energy and time for the two modes, where the time assignments and the transmit power are jointly optimized. For the local computing mode, we obtain the closed-form expression of the optimal time assignment for energy harvesting by solving a convex optimization problem, and then analyze the effects of scaling factor between the minimal required energy and time on the optimal time assignment. For the fog computing mode, we derive closed-form and semi-closed-form expressions of the optimal transmit power and time assignment for offloading by adopting the Lagrangian dual method, the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) conditions and Lambert W Function. Simulation results show that, when the sensor device has poor computing capacity or when it is far away from the AP, the fog computing mode is the better choice; otherwise, the local computing is preferred to achieve a better performance.

It is allowed that data of the content producer is cached anywhere in Content Centric MANET (CCMANET). This scheme decoupling of data from the data source make traditional end-end authentication transmission unavailable in CCMANET. So, it is a challenge how to ensure content publishing or subscribing only by legitimate users. In this paper, we firstly design a new Yaksha system on Elliptic Curve (EC-Yaksha), and then a secure Content Publish/Subscribe System based on EC-Yaksha (ECY-CPS) for CCMANET is proposed. In ECY-CPS, EC-Yaksha server manages joining or leaving of network users and distributes “license” only to legitimate user for content publishing or subscribing. Such, it is guaranteed that only the legitimate users can publish content to network or access content cached in network. In addition, using of the license can efficiently defend common attacks such as the interest flooding and the content pollution etc. Finally, we prove security properties of ECY-CPS in PCL and make a simple comparison between our system and the related solution.
