With the expansion of Information and Communication Technology, it is important to develop a communication network that can provide high-capacity ubiquitous connectivity. This work proposes an energy-efficient passive optical network (PON) using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to facilitate the dense deployment of radio units (RUs) in a beyond 5G (B5G) communication network. High-speed connectivity is ensured by employing a hybrid PON architecture that includes a combination of free space optics (FSO) links and optical fiber (OF) media to carry OFDM and WDM multiplexed traffic. Furthermore, an optical frequency comb generator (OFCG) is utilized at the transmitter module to generate and leverage the spectrum for transmitting information from baseband units (BBUs) to the RUs situated near the end users. The proposed system is analyzed through (i) simulation analysis using Optisystem for transmission capacity computations and (ii) mathematical analysis to determine the total savings in energy. The simulation analysis shows that the given architecture can carry data across 3 km of FSO medium using 512 subcarriers per BBU transmitting at 10 Gbps of data with QPSK-modulated bit sequence. Additionally, energy efficiency shows that the use of an OFCG cuts the total energy usage by 22% at the transmitter module without negatively impacting the system’s high cardinality and transmission capacity.

In this paper, a new technique for generation of ultra-wide and flattened optical frequency comb (OFC) based on serial cascading of a phase modulator and dual-driven Lithium-Niobate Mach Zehnder modulator (DD-LiNbO3-MZM) is proposed. Over 60 carriers were generated by carefully adjusting the RF switching voltage (RFSV) of the DD-LiNbO3-MZM and the signal frequency of the sinusoidal wave (RF) source. A low power amplified RF source with a signal driving power of ~16.9dBm is applied, and the power of CW laser is kept at 3dBm. The frequency spacing (FS) is kept at 20GHz for generating the maximum number of carriers. Nonetheless, the scheme is also tested for the FSs of 64GHz, and 32GHz. Each scenario is examined in simulation environment and the main outcomes are highlighted. The proposed scheme is comparatively simple and the FS varies with the applied RF source on the modulators. The achieved OFC lines have a tone-to-noise ratio (TNR) of over ~45dB with an undesired side mode suppression ratio of approximately 20dB. The comb lines are almost flat with a varying power deviation of around 0dB-6dB which is optimized to nearly ~0.12dB. Furthermore, the impact of the RFSV on the generated number of carriers is studied in detail. The scheme is analyzed in terms of cost efficiency, power deviations, TNR, optical signal to noise ratio, and number of achieved comb lines.

In a typical 10G-Passive Optical Network (XG-PON), the propagation delay between the Optical Network Unit (ONU) and Optical Line Terminal (OLT) is about 0.3 ms. With a frame size of 125 μs, this amounts to three frames of data in the upstream and three frames of data in the downstream. Assuming no processing delays, the grants for any bandwidth requests reach the ONU after six frames in this request-grant cycle. Often, during this six-frame delay, the queue situation is changed drastically, as much, more data would arrive in the queue. As a result, the queued data that is delayed loses its significance due to its real-time nature. Unfortunately, almost all dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithms follow this request-grant cycle and hence lacking in their performance. This paper introduces a novel approach for bandwidth allocation, called Demand Forecasting DBA (DF-DBA), which predicts ONU’s future demands by statistical modelling of the demand patterns and tends to fulfil the predicted demands just in time, which results in reduced delay. Simulation results indicate that the proposed technique out-performs previous DBAs, such as GigaPON access network (GIANT) and round robin (RR) employing the request-grant cycle in terms of Throughput and Packet delivery ratio (PDR). Circular buffers are introduced in statistical predictions, which produce the least delay for this novel DF-DBA. This paper, hence, opens up a new horizon of research in which researchers may come up with better statistical models to brew better and better results for Passive optical networks.

The rapid advancement of terahertz (THz) communication systems has positioned this technology as a key enabler for next-generation telecommunication networks, including 6G, secure communications, and hybrid wireless-optical systems. This review comprehensively analyzes THz communication, emphasizing its integration with free-space optical (FSO) systems to overcome conventional bandwidth limitations. While THz-FSO technology promises ultra-high data rates, it is significantly affected by atmospheric absorption, particularly absorption beyond 500 GHz, where the attenuation exceeds 100 dB/km, which severely limits its transmission range. However, the presence of a lower-loss transmission window at 680 GHz provides an opportunity for optimized THz-FSO communication. This paper explores recent developments in high-power THz sources, such as quantum cascade lasers, photonic mixers, and free-electron lasers, which facilitate the attainment of ultra-high data rates. Additionally, adaptive optics, machine learning-based beam alignment, and low-loss materials are examined as potential solutions to mitigating signal degradation due to atmospheric absorption. The integration of THz-FSO systems with optical and radio frequency (RF) technologies is assessed within the framework of software-defined networking (SDN) and multi-band adaptive communication, enhancing their reliability and range. Furthermore, this review discusses emerging applications such as self-driving systems in 6G networks, ultra-low latency communication, holographic telepresence, and inter-satellite links. Future research directions include the use of artificial intelligence for network optimization, creating energy-efficient system designs, and quantum encryption to obtain secure THz communications. Despite the severe constraints imposed by atmospheric attenuation, the technology’s power efficiency, and the materials that are used, THz-FSO technology is promising for the field of ultra-fast and secure next-generation networks. Addressing these limitations through hybrid optical-THz architectures, AI-driven adaptation, and advanced waveguides will be critical for the full realization of THz-FSO communication in modern telecommunication infrastructures.

In this paper, a novel cost-effective optical multi-wavelength generation scheme based on a pulsed laser and a single Mach Zehnder modulator (MZM) is proposed. Over 50 wavelengths has been achieved with the proposed cost effective scheme amongst which 37 wavelengths were selected for transmission because of their small amplitude excursions between the wavelengths and high tone-to-noise-ratio of over 40dB. Frequency spacing is kept at 12.5GHz, where 10Gbps data based differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation technique is utilized for downlink transmission across each wavelength in single feeder fiber (SFF) wavelength division multiplexed- passive optical network (WDM-PON), and the results are examined for 25km, and 50km SFF. In SFF, uplink (UL) transmission can be impaired by Raleigh backscattering (RBS) noise. In this scheme, RBS noise is alleviated at ONU side with the help of carrier suppression by utilizing non-return-to-zero (NRZ) dual port (DP) dual drive (DD) MZM modulation technique where both the downlink (DL) and UL transmissions are merged by using optical circulators without using dispersion compensating fiber. At the receiver side, the signals are identified with the help of optical filters, and divided in two halves using 1x2 forks, half of which is received and demodulated using DPSK receiver whereas the other half of the transmitted signal is re-modulated with the help of a single 10Gbps NRZ-DP-DD-MZM modulation technique for UL transmission. Overall, 740Gbps data has been transmitted across 25km, and 50km bidirectional optical fiber for DL and UL transmission. The proposed scheme is analyzed in terms of bit error rate of 10e-9, power penalties (PP) and eye diagrams (ED). It is found that the observed PPs are negligible, and wide openings of the EDs satisfies that the proposed scheme is worth consideration for deployment in long reach WDM-PON.

This study proposes and presents a new central office (CO) for the optical metro access network (OMAN) with an affordable and distinctive switching system. The CO’s foundation is built upon a novel optical multicarrier (OMC) generation technique. This technique provides numerous frequency carriers that are characterized by a high tone-to-noise ratio (TNR) of 40 dB and minimal amplitude excursions. The purpose is to accommodate multiple users at the optical network unit side in the optical metropolitan area network (OMAN). The OMC generation is achieved through a cascaded configuration involving a single phase and two Mach Zehnder modulators without incorporating optical or electrical amplifiers or filters. The proposed OMC is installed in the CO of the OMAN to support the 1.2 Tbps downlink and 600 Gbps uplink transmission, with practical bit error rate (BER) ranges from 10−3 to 10−13 for the downlink and 10−6 to 10−14 for the uplink transmission. Furthermore, in the OMAN’s context, optical fiber failure is a main issue. Therefore, we have proposed a possible solution for ensuring uninterrupted communication without any disturbance in various scenarios of main optical fiber failures. This demonstrates how this novel CO can rapidly recover transmission failures through robust switching a and centralized OLT. The proposed system is intended to provide users with a reliable and affordable service while maintaining high-quality transmission rates.
