Flooding throughout the Pantanal is seasonal. The complex vegetative cover and high seasonal productivity support a diverse and abundant fauna. A gradient in flood level supports a range of major habitats in a complex mosaic with annual seasonality. The rivers and streams are lined with gallery forests, and other arboreal habitats exist in the more elevated areas. The remainder is either grasslands or seasonally flooded grasslands. The regional flora and fauna are adapted to annual water fluctuation. However, an inter-annual series of higher or lower rainfalls has caused either severe floods or drastic dry seasons. Large scale climate phenomena such as greenhouse gases, El Niño and La Niña influence the seasonality of floods and droughts in the Pantanal. Knowledge of severe floods and droughts, which characterize natural disasters, is fundamental for wildlife management and nature conservation of the Pantanal. Plants and wild animals, for example, are affected by tree mortality in riparian forest after extreme flooding, with consequent habitat modification for wild animals. In addition, human activities are also affected since cattle ranching and ecotourism are economically important in the region, and when seasons with unusual floods or droughts occur, areas with human settlements are impacted.

Actions to popularize science associated with the use of digital media expand the opportunities and spaces for the dissemination of topics of interest for the society, introducing additional effort to increase the intelligibility of scientific discourse by the lay public. Currently, in public research institutions, such as the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), scientific dissemination actions have also been supported by communication strategies in digital media, through micro video and mobile applications for access via cell phones, tablets and smartphones. This article presents research results aimed at the definition of a communication strategy to promote the dissemination of information and knowledge generated by Embrapa on technological solutions, especially softwares and information systems, necessary for the adaptation of the rural landscape to the Brazilian Forest Code. After a process of identification and qualification of software products and information systems, whose contents cover the environmental and forest issues, and given the lack of Embrapa of audiovisual materials and mobile applications on such technologies, it was decided to produce sixteen micro videos and by developing a mobile application. With this communication strategy, Embrapa expands the means of free access to the knowledge generated by the research, using digital resources made available through mobile devices, accessible through the Internet. These resources favor the approach of Embrapa with society, contributing to the popularization of scientific knowledge. KEYWORDS: scientific dissemination; technology transfer; digital content; georeferenced information systems; mobile application.

In Brazil, the Steppe Savanna and associated vegetation types, typical of the Chaco, are in the Pantanal biome. Land use in this region has caused the suppression of natural vegetation and the emission of greenhouse gases. The knowledge of the phytophysiognomies of the Chaco and its importance for the mitigation and adaptation to climate change can contribute to conservation and protection policies in this region, including specific public policies to support the sustainable use of biodiversity and carbon stock (C). In this work, we present an estimate of the balance between CO2 emissions and removals associated with land use and land cover changes for the Brazilian Chaco, considering the annual average of C loss or gain in living biomass and dead organic matter in three different periods: 1990 to 2000, 2000 to 2010 and 2010 to 2019. The methodology followed the one recommended by the Fourth National Communication of Brazil to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, with adaptations. The results show that the natural vegetation of the Brazilian Chaco has been replaced by pasture throughout the studied period (1990-2019). The Savanna Formations had the greatest reduction in area in this period. The balance points to a net emission of 0.12, 0.05, and 0.03 MgCO2 ha-1 year-1, respectively, in 1990-2000, 2000-2010, and 2010-2019. CO2 removals predominate especially in the Kadiweu Indigenous Land, and emissions prevail in the Chaco South region.
