Recycling waste tire rubber by incorporating it into concrete has become the preferred solution to dispose of waste tires. In this study, the effect of the volume content of crumb rubber and pretreatment methods on the performances of concrete was evaluated. Firstly, the fine aggregate and mixture were partly replaced by crumb rubber to produce crumb rubber concrete. Secondly, the mechanical and durability properties of crumb rubber concrete with different replacement forms and volume contents had been investigated. Finally, the crumb rubber after pretreatment by six modifiers was introduced into the concrete mixture. Corresponding tests were conducted to verify the effectiveness of pretreatment methods as compared to the concrete containing untreated crumb rubber. It was observed that the mechanical strength of crumb rubber concrete was reduced, while durability was improved with the increasing of crumb rubber content. 20% replacement of fine aggregate and 5% replacement of the total mixture exhibited acceptable properties for practical applications. In addition, the results indicated that the modifiers had a positive impact on the mechanical and durability properties of crumb rubber concrete. It avoided the disadvantage of crumb rubber concrete having lower strength and provides a reference for the production of modified crumb rubber concrete.

This study proposed an asphalt mixture modified by basalt fiber and diatomite. Performance of diatomite modified asphalt mixture (DAM), basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture (BFAM), diatomite and basalt fiber compound modified asphalt mixture (DBFAM), and control asphalt mixture (AM) were investigated by experimental methods. The wheel tracking test, low-temperature indirect tensile test, moisture susceptibility test, fatigue test and freeze–thaw cycles test of four kinds of asphalt mixtures were carried out. The results show that the addition of basalt fiber and diatomite can improve the pavement performance. Diatomite has a significant effect on the high temperature stability, moisture susceptibility and resistance to moisture and frost damage under freeze–thaw cycles of asphalt mixture. Basalt fiber has a significant effect on low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixture. Composed modified asphalt mixture has obvious advantages on performance compared to the control asphalt mixture. It will provide a reference for the design of asphalt mixture in seasonal frozen regions.

Waste utilization has gained more and more interest. In this study, crumb rubber and diatomite were used to modify asphalt binder and the short-term aging effects on the properties of modified asphalts were evaluated. Three kinds of modified asphalt were prepared; they are diatomite modified asphalt (DA), crumb rubber modified asphalt (RA), and diatomite and crumb rubber compound modified asphalt (DRA). Thin film oven test (TFOT) was used to simulate short-term aging in the laboratory. Penetration, softening points, ductility, viscosity, elastic recovery, low temperature creep, and rutting susceptibility were tested and analyzed before and after TFOT. The results indicated that the softening point, viscosity, elastic recovery, creep stiffness, and G*/sinδ of DA, RA, and DRA are all linearly increased with increasing age, while the penetration and ductility are linearly decreased with increasing age. High temperature properties of asphalt are obviously improved by the addition of crumb rubber. Low temperature properties of asphalt are affected more seriously by the addition of diatomite. DRA could combine the advantages of diatomite and crumb rubber and achieve better performance in short-term aging resistance than DA and RA.

Ageing of asphalt affects the performances of asphalt pavement significantly. Therefore, effects of diatomite and mineral powder on ageing properties of asphalt were investigated systematically in order to improve the antiageing property of mixture. Thin film oven test (TFOT) was used to conduct the short term ageing in laboratory. Softening points, penetrations, force ductility, low temperature creep properties, and viscosities of asphalt mastics were tested before and after TFOT, respectively. Results indicated that percent retained penetration (PRP) increased with the increasing of fillers. Increment of softening point (ΔT), ductility retention rate (DRR), deformation energy ageing index (JAI), and viscosity ageing index (VAI) of asphalt mastics nonlinearly decreased with the increasing of fillers. Ageing of asphalt was reduced by diatomite and mineral powder. And the antiageing effect of diatomite was better than that of mineral powder as a result of its porous structure. It is suggested that the mineral powder could be reasonably replaced by diatomite in order to reduce thermal oxidative ageing of asphalt mixture. The optimal content of diatomite 12.8% is also suggested for engineering.

The values of key parameters, asphalt aggregate ratio, mixing/compacting temperature, striking/compacting times, and fiber content are usually determined according to bulk properties or empirical values when molding asphalt mixture, which is inefficient and subjective. In this study, a modified response surface methodology (RSM) method was introduced to comprehensively optimize design of asphalt mixture molding process with the optimal value of pavement performance as a response variable. The single-factor tests were first conducted to find the specific ranges of key factors in the response surface models. Then the response surface models between effect factors and three different pavement performance parameters were established based on the Box-Behnken design (BBD) theory. Lastly, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was applied to determine weights distribution of the effect factors, and the optimal values of effect factors and pavement performances were obtained. Results indicate that fitting e...
