In single-phase voltage source inverters under a weak grid, the frequency coupling, caused by the asymmetrical system structure, poses a challenge to system modeling and controller design. In this article, a frequency coupling suppression control strategy is presented, where all the frequency coupling components in the current reference are eliminated. As a result, the single-phase grid-tied inverter is directly modeled as a simple single-input single-output (SISO) admittance rather than a complicated multiple-input multiple-output admittance matrix. The SISO admittance model is simple, compact, and accurate, which facilitates design-oriented analysis. The admittance characteristic analysis shows that the Symmetrical phase-locked loop (Sym-PLL) has a critical impact on the system stability under weak grid conditions. To improve the system stability, a prefilter-based impedance-shaping control strategy is proposed by mitigating the negative resistor behavior of the Sym-PLL. Finally, simulations and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the frequency-coupling suppression control strategy.

For the high-power Li-Ion battery (LIB) Formation and Grading System using multi-stage conversion structure, bidirectional isolated DC-DC converter with high input voltage and large output current is needed to achieve isolation and relatively fixed voltage conversion gain. This paper proposes a modulation strategy and modifies the topology to achieve naturally bidirectional power transfer, automatic power sharing and power limitation for an Input-series-output-parallel (ISOP) LLC-DCX converter. Firstly, an active Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) strategy is proposed to avoid synchronous rectifier (SR) sensing and to achieve the nature bidirectional power flow for each sub-module. The resonant current always keeps discontinuous, and the conversion gain can keep constant if ignoring the conduction resistance. Secondly, clamping diodes are added in the conventional LLC converter to limit the inrush current during start-up, and to achieve constant power limitation under over load condition. Thirdly, with the proposed modulation, the power sharing of two-module ISOP LLC converter is analyzed and compared with the conventional ISOP LLC converter. Finally, experiments based on an 8kW (output:15V/533A) prototype composed of two-module ISOP LLC converter are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

This article proposed a current-sensorless control scheme for the single-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) inverter under nonlinear load. Different from the existing current-sensorless literature, the information of load current can be obtained by the designed adaptive laws. It is meaningful for the system’s security and reliability. Under the assumption that the load is a periodic ideal-independent current source, the Fourier series in trigonometric form is expanded to model the unknown disturbance of load current. The observer-based feedback control rate and update laws are derived to adjust online the Fourier coefficients of the load current modeling. Furthermore, the stability of the system is rigorously analyzed via the Lyapunov approach. Under the same limitation of not using the current sensor, comparative experiments are designed. Simulation and experimental results have verified the effectiveness of the control approaches.

In this article, a resistance-emulating control strategy without grid voltage sensors is proposed for three-phase voltage source rectifiers under unbalanced grid conditions. It consists of angle estimator, coordinate correction, resistance-emulating, common-mode resistance (CMR) and the differential-mode resistance (DMR) regulation, extended state observer, and other critical steps. In this scheme, the CMR regulates the average power, and the DMR controls the ripple power caused by the unbalanced supplies. Three different control objectives including constant active power, symmetrical input currents, and constant reactive power are achieved by regulating the DMR. Since the grid voltage sensors and the information of the grid-side circuit parameters are not required, the cost is reduced and the robustness and reliability of the scheme is improved. Experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Due to the nonlinear time-periodic nature, precise impedance modeling of power-converter-based single-phase ac systems is complex. Small-signal modeling for the systems with a fixed operating point is easy, but the extension of the same procedure to the systems with time-periodic trajectory is still challenging. In this article, a recursive single-input single-output (SISO) impedance modeling framework for single-phase rectifiers is presented, which can greatly simplify both the modeling procedure and the resulting impedance model. A general linear-time periodic modeling method is proposed by extending the linear-time invariant modeling method, where frequency-coupling effects are modeled by the transfer function vector rather than the transfer function matrix, so the modeling complexity is reduced. Furthermore, based on the idea of mathematical induction, an analytical and accurate recursive SISO impedance model is derived. The resulting recursive SISO impedance model can characterize the frequency-coupling dynamics of arbitrary order with a low computation burden. Experiments validate the accuracy of the recursive SISO impedance modeling method.

This study proposes a generalized design framework for three phase Vienna rectifiers to handle the neutral point voltage balance issue. On the basis of the design framework, it is convenient to construct various neutral point voltage balancing methods with the guarantee of stability. As demonstration, three representative neutral point voltage balance approaches are presented by choosing different zero sequence voltages. A comprehensive comparison among the three approaches are given in the aspects of input current quality, capacitor voltage fluctuation, and system efficiency. The comparison results provide a guidance for constructing the most appropriate approach based on the specific requirement. Finally, simulation and experimental results verify the correctness and effectiveness of the presented approaches and the related performance analysis.
