This study was carried out to determine the forage production potentials of different sweet sorghum genotypes under Mediterranean-type climate conditions as the second crop in 2020. Three different sweet sorghum genotypes (Erdurmuş, Uzun varieties, and M81-E line) and four nitrogen doses (0.0, 7.5 12.5, 17.5 kg da-1) were used in this research. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. Some parameters such as plant height, stem diameter, plant number per m2, leaf number, leaf and stem ratio, forage yield, and dry matter yield of sweet sorghum genotiyps were investigated in the experiment. According to the results, M81-E gave the highest values in terms of stem diameter, leaf number, forage yield, and dry matter yield parameter compared to other genotypes. Forage yield values of the genotypes were between 2969.9 and 5815.0 kg da-1 and dry matter yield values were 1105.7 and 2837.8 kg da-1. Forage yield values vary between 2920.1 and 4674.6 kg da-1 for the nitrogen doses. The highest forage yield was obtained at 12.5 and 17.5 kg da-1 nitrogen doses, which were in the same statistical group. Fertilization can be made with a 12.5 kg da-1 nitrogen dose in sweet sorghum due to the negative environmental effects of chemical fertilizers.

The study aimed to determine the forage production potentials of different sweet sorghum genotypes under Mediterranean-type climate conditions as a second crop. The field experiments were conducted in Bursa Uludag University, Faculty of Agriculture, in 2020-2021. The experimental design was a factorial randomized complete block with three replications. Three different sweet sorghum genotypes (Erdurmuş, Uzun, and M81-E) and four nitrogen doses (0, 75, 125, 175 kg ha-1) were used in this research. Forage yield, dry matter yield, plant height, stem diameter, leaf number, leaf ratio, and stem ratio of sweet sorghum were investigated in the experiment. Among the three sweet sorghum genotypes studied, a varied range was observed regarding plant height (262 to 288 cm), stem diameter (19.2 to 24.8 mm), leaf ratio (11.5% to 14.4%), stem ratio (85.6 to 88.5 mm), forage yield (28.6 to 56.2 t ha-1) dry matter yield (7.8 to 15.7 t ha-1). According to the research results obtained in the second crop conditions, it can be recommended to grow the M81-E genotype using a nitrogen dose of 175 kg ha-1 in terms of high forage and dry matter yields.
Climate change has increased the need for turfgrass germplasm with improved adaptation, persistence, and resource-use efficiency. Tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus) is an important cool-season turfgrass species valued for its tolerance to environmental stresses. This study aimed to assess phenotypic and molecular diversity among individual tall fescue plants derived from 24 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Gene Bank accessions and to identify promising turf-type parental material by integrating phenotypic and molecular information. A total of 223 genotypes were evaluated for 17 morphological and agronomic traits, and 120 genotypes were selected using a multi-trait weighted selection index for SSR-based molecular characterization. Principal component (PC) analysis showed that PC1 and PC2 accounted for 50.8% and 12.0% of the total phenotypic variation, respectively. Fourteen polymorphic SSR markers generated 69 polymorphic bands, with an overall mean polymorphism information content (PIC) value of 0.343. Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) analysis resolved two major molecular groups with four nested subclusters. Mantel analysis showed a weak but significant positive association between phenotypic and SSR-based molecular distances (r = 0.137, p < 0.001), indicating limited correspondence between the two data types. By jointly considering morphological performance and molecular diversity, 60 genotypes were identified as promising parental candidates for future tall fescue breeding programs.
