Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a fast-spreading disease across the globe, which is caused by diabetes. The DR may lead the diabetic patients to complete vision loss. In this scenario, early identification of DR is more essential to recover the eyesight and provide help for timely treatment. The detection of DR can be manually performed by ophthalmologists and can also be done by an automated system. In the manual system, analysis and explanation of retinal fundus images need ophthalmologists, which is a time-consuming and very expensive task, but in the automated system, artificial intelligence is used to perform an imperative role in the area of ophthalmology and specifically in the early detection of diabetic retinopathy over the traditional detection approaches. Recently, numerous advanced studies related to the identification of DR have been reported. This paper presents a detailed review of the detection of DR with three major aspects; retinal datasets, DR detection methods, and performance evaluation metrics. Furthermore, this study also covers the author's observations and provides future directions in the field of diabetic retinopathy to overcome the research challenges for the research community.

Rapid advancement in imaging technology generates an enormous amount of heterogeneous medical data for disease diagnosis and rehabilitation process. Radiologists may require related clinical cases from medical archives for analysis and disease diagnosis. It is challenging to retrieve the associated clinical cases automatically, efficiently and accurately from the substantial medical image archive due to diversity in diseases and imaging modalities. We proposed an efficient and accurate approach for medical image modality classification that can used for retrieval of clinical cases from large medical repositories. The proposed approach is developed using transfer learning concept with pre-trained ResNet50 Deep learning model for optimized features extraction followed by linear discriminant analysis classification (TLRN-LDA). Extensive experiments are performed on challenging standard benchmark ImageCLEF-2012 dataset of 31 classes. The developed approach yields improved average classification accuracy of 87.91%, which is higher up-to 10% compared to the state-of-the-art approaches on the same dataset. Moreover, hand-crafted features are extracted for comparison. Performance of TLRN-LDA system demonstrates the effectiveness over state-of-the-art systems. The developed approach may be deployed to diagnostic centers to assist the practitioners for accurate and efficient clinical case retrieval and disease diagnosis.

The nutritional value of perishable food items, such as fruits and vegetables, depends on their freshness levels. The existing approaches solve a binary class problem by classifying a known fruit\vegetable class into fresh or rotten only. We propose an automated fruits and vegetables categorization approach that first recognizes the class of object in an image and then categorizes that fruit or vegetable into one of the three categories: pure-fresh, medium-fresh, and rotten. We gathered a dataset comprising of 60K images of 11 fruits and vegetables, each is further divided into three categories of freshness, using hand-held cameras. The recognition and categorization of fruits and vegetables are performed through two deep learning models: Visual Geometry Group (VGG-16) and You Only Look Once (YOLO), and their results are compared. VGG-16 classifies fruits and vegetables and categorizes their freshness, while YOLO also localizes them within the image. Furthermore, we have developed an android based application that takes the image of the fruit or vegetable as input and returns its class label and its freshness degree. A comprehensive experimental evaluation of proposed approach demonstrates that the proposed approach can achieve a high accuracy and F1score on gathered FruitVeg Freshness dataset. The dataset is publicly available for further evaluation by the research community.

Crop leaf disease management and control pose significant impact on enhancement in yield and quality to fulfill consumer needs. For smart agriculture, an intelligent leaf disease identification system is inevitable for efficient crop health monitoring. In this view, a novel approach is proposed for crop disease identification using feature fusion and PCA-LDA classification (FF-PCA-LDA). Handcrafted hybrid and deep features are extracted from RGB images. TL-ResNet50 is used to extract the deep features. Fused feature vector is obtained by combining handcrafted hybrid and deep features. After fusing the image features, PCA is employed to select most discriminant features for LDA model development. Potato crop leaf disease identification is used as a case study for the validation of the approach. The developed system is experimentally validated on a potato crop leaf benchmark dataset. It offers high accuracy of 98.20% on an unseen dataset which was not used during the model training process. Performance comparison of the proposed technique with other approaches shows its superiority. Owing to the better discrimination and learning ability, the proposed approach overcomes the leaf segmentation step. The developed approach may be used as an automated tool for crop monitoring, management control, and can be extended for other crop types.
