Drawing from recent developments in the field, this article explores advanced control methodologies for active suspension systems with the aim of enhancing ride comfort and vehicle handling. The study systematically and comprehensively implements, simulates, and compares five control methods: Proportional‐integral‐derivative (PID), linear quadratic regulator (LQR), , , and synthesis in the context of half‐vehicle active suspension systems. By using a detailed system model that includes parameter uncertainties and performance weights, analysis, and simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of each control approach. The results provide valuable insights into the strengths and limitations of these methods, offering a comprehensive comparative analysis. Notably, the study reveals that control may not ensure stability for all possible combinations within a broad range of uncertainties, indicating the need for careful consideration in its application. The results and simulations thoroughly evaluate and compare the performance of each control strategy across various output responses, contributing to the advancement of more effective and reliable active suspension systems.

The present study suggests a new active control structure with a switching algorithm for control current of the electromagnetic actuator to suppress vibrations of a flexible blade element containing magnetorheological (MR) fluid. An identification model between MR fluid inside the blade and the electromagnetic actuator is utilized to derive the force equation. Since only one electromagnet is employed to suppress the blade vibration, a single-sided control actuation occurs in the proposed system. Therefore, the pulling force used for vibration control is generated by the actuator when the blade moves to downward direction. A switching linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controller that produces always a positive control input is designed to attenuate the blade vibrations. The LQG controller with switching is experimentally implemented under the impact and steady-state aerodynamic disturbances. The results of experiments show that the proposed switching controller is effective to attenuate vibrations of the flexible blade element.

This study examined the control performance of a multi-layer smart beam structure in which the middle layer was partially filled with magnetorheological (MR) fluid. A galloping profile was connected to the endpoint to obtain vibration from this smart beam element in a regular regime. Flow-induced continuous vibration was created on the beam element by giving wind load from a certain distance to this galloping profile. The natural frequency values of the smart beam element were obtained analytically using the lumped parameter mathematical model, and their accuracy was compared with numerical methods. An electromagnet was placed opposite to MR fluid region to suppress vibrations by creating an actuator relationship with the smart beam. A norm-based H∞ robust control design was realized by taking the natural frequencies of the beam element into account. The control design was applied to the experimental system and the effectiveness of the controller was tested under various conditions. It was observed that the proposed MR fluid embedded active control structure has good properties to suppress the wind-induced vibrations in practice.
