An annular slot antenna suitable for pattern diversity in wideband applications is presented. Pattern diversity is obtained by feeding the antenna simultaneously with two microstrip lines printed on the back of the substrate, which generate orthogonal radiation patterns. Two shorts placed at 45 degrees between the microstrip lines and in the opposite direction ensure an isolation above 15 dB according to measurements. The antenna operates in the range of frequencies from 3 GHz to 12 GHz (1:4 bandwidth) and covers many different standards (Wireless-LAN, HIPERLAN2, WIMAX, UWB). Simulations and measurements for return loss, isolation and radiation patterns are presented. Furthermore, measurements have been carried out in a real multipath environment in order to evaluate pattern diversity performance. Results of measurements of the correlation coefficient and diversity gain over the entire operating bandwidth show that the antenna is suitable for antenna diversity systems.

This paper presents the design, low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) fabrication, and full experimental verification of novel dielectric flat lens antennas for future high data rate 5G wireless communication systems in the 60 GHz band. We introduce and practically completely evaluate and compare the performance of three different inhomogeneous gradient-index dielectric lenses with the effective parameters circularly and cylindrically distributed. These lenses, despite their planar profile antenna configuration, allow full 2-D beam scanning of high-gain radiation beams. A time-domain spectroscopy system is used to practically evaluate the permittivity profile achieved with the LTCC manufacturing process, obtaining very good results to confirm the viability of fabricating inhomogeneous flat lenses in a mass production technology. Then, the lenses performance is evaluated in terms of radiation pattern parameters, maximum gain, beam scanning, bandwidth performance, efficiencies, and impedance matching in the whole frequency band of interest. Finally, the performance of the three lenses is also experimentally evaluated and compared to a single omni-directional antenna and to a ten-element uniform linear array of omni-directional antennas in real 60 GHz wireless personal area network indoor line-of-sight (LOS) and obstructed-LOS environments, obtaining interesting and promising remarkable results in terms of measured received power and root-mean-square delay spread. At the end of this paper, an innovative switched-beam antenna array concept based on the presented cylindrically distributed effective parameters lens is also introduced and completely evaluated, confirming the potential applicability of the proposed antenna solution for future 5G wireless millimeter-wave communication system.

Simulations are currently an essential tool to develop and test wireless sensor networks (WSNs) protocols and to analyze future WSNs applications performance. Researchers often simulate their proposals rather than deploying high-cost test-beds or develop complex mathematical analysis. However, simulation results rely on physical layer assumptions, which are not usually accurate enough to capture the real behavior of a WSN. Such an issue can lead to mistaken or questionable results. Besides, most of the envisioned applications for WSNs consider the nodes to be at the ground level. However, there is a lack of radio propagation characterization and validation by measurements with nodes at ground level for actual sensor hardware. In this paper, we propose to use a low-computational cost, two slope, log-normal path-loss near ground outdoor channel model at 868 MHz in WSN simulations. The model is validated by extensive real hardware measurements obtained in different scenarios. In addition, accurate model parameters are provided. This model is compared with the well-known one slope path-loss model. We demonstrate that the two slope log-normal model provides more accurate WSN simulations at almost the same computational cost as the single slope one. It is also shown that the radio propagation characterization heavily depends on the adjusted model parameters for a target deployment scenario: The model parameters have a considerable impact on the average number of neighbors and on the network connectivity.

We develop a modal approach for analyzing multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channel propagation in a tunnel with lossy walls. We use parametric methods to study the effects of the number of modes and of the separation among antennas. We evaluate the performance of the MIMO channel in terms of capacity as a function of range and tunnel size.

In this paper, a 4 times 4 indoor multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) measurement campaign at a frequency of 2.45 GHz is presented. The main contribution of this work is the analysis of the impact of radio-wave polarization in MIMO systems operating at a typical indoor scenario through the calculation-from the measurements carried out-of a great deal of parameters such as the mean path loss, the cross polarization discrimination (XPD), and the RMS delay spread, which are all essential to estimate the performance of real MIMO systems. In this sense, some path loss models-which have been adjusted according to the measurements-are given, taking into account polarization, attenuation through walls, and the effect of T-junctions existing in the considered indoor scenario. Moreover, additional parameters such as the K-factor and statistical distribution, as well as spatial parameters, are discussed.

We investigate the possibility of using the modal theory of the electromagnetic propagation in rectangular or circular tunnels, to satisfactorily interpret experimental results, including polarization, in arched tunnels. This study is based on extensive measurement campaigns carried out in the 450 MHz-5 GHz frequency range.
