In the current study, we aimed to investigate whether thyroid autoimmunity (TA) had any effect on carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and enhanced the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) independent of thyroid function (TF) in pubertal girls with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Sixty-six newly diagnosed euthyroid girls with HT with a mean age of 14.4±2.4 years were included in the study. The control group consisted of 41 age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy girls. At enrollment, all subjects underwent physical examination including blood pressure, standing height, weight, waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference measurements. The lipid profile, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), homocysteine, blood glucose, insulin, TF, and thyroid antibodies were measured, and thyroid ultrasound and cIMT were performed. There were no significant differences in anthropometric variables between the two groups, but the patients with HT had significantly higher waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Thyroid hormones, insulin, homocysteine, and homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance were not different between the two groups. Serum hs-CRP levels were significantly higher in patients than controls (3.4 ng/mL vs. 2.03 ng/mL), (p<0.001). Patients were also characterized by significantly higher total cholesterol (166.4±27 mg/dL vs. 151±22 mg/dL), (p<0.01) and low-density cholesterol (95.8±24.4 mg/dL vs. 82.6±20.7 mg/dL), (p<0.01) levels. Patients, regardless of TF, had significantly increased cIMT compared with controls [0.28 mm vs. 0.25 mm, (p<0.001)], and cIMT was correlated with weight-standard deviation score (SDS), BMI-SDS, WC-SDS, and WHR. This increase in cIMT was associated independently with BMI-SDS and hs-CRP levels. TA may be related to chronic inflammation, which may cause endothelial dysfunction, a promoter of atherosclerosis in girls with HT. cIMT is a good tool for the early detection and the monitoring of early atherosclerosis in euthyroid patients with HT. Early detection of risk factors of CVD, may be helpful for planning treatment and interventions, so as to prevent complications from the disease in adulthood.

We aimed to report the characteristics at admission, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of cases of pediatric hyperprolactinemia in a large multicenter study. We reviewed the records of 233 hyperprolactinemic patients, under 18 years of age, who were followed by different centers. The patients were divided as having microadenomas, macroadenomas, drug-induced hyperprolactinemia and idiopathic hyperprolactinemia. Complaints of the patients, their mode of treatment (medication and/or surgery) and outcomes were evaluated in detail. The mean age of the patients with hyperprolactinemia was 14.5 years, and 88.4% were females. In terms of etiology, microadenomas were observed in 32.6%, macroadenomas in 27%, idiopathic hyperprolactinemia in 22.7% and drug-induced hyperprolactinemia in 6.4%. Other causes of hyperprolactinemia were defined in 11.3%. Common complaints in females (n=206) were sorted into menstrual irregularities, headaches, galactorrhea, primary or secondary amenorrhea and weight gain, whereas headache, gynecomastia, short stature and blurred vision were common in males (n=27). Median prolactin levels were 93.15 ng/mL, 241.8 ng/mL, 74.5 ng/mL, 93.2 ng/mL, and 69 ng/mL for microadenomas, macroadenomas, idiopathic hyperprolactinemia, drug-induced hyperprolactinemia, and other causes of hyperprolactinemia, respectively. Of 172 patients with hyperprolactinemia, 77.3% were treated with cabergoline and 13.4% with bromocriptine. 20.1% of the patients with pituitary adenomas underwent pituitary surgery. We present the largest cohort of children and adolescents with hyperprolactinemia in the literature to date. Hyperprolactinemia is more common in females and cabergoline is highly effective and practical to use in adolescents, due to its biweekly dosing. Indications for surgery in pediatric cases need to be revised.

The study aimed to determine the level of knowledge and the sources of information about normal puberty and menstrual patterns in Turkish schoolgirls from İstanbul. The study sample was comprised of 922 randomly chosen schoolgirls. A questionnaire survey of knowledge of normal pubertal development and menstrual patterns was conducted. The age of the girls ranged between 10 and 17 years and 82.3% had had menarche. The leading source of pubertal information was the mothers (84.2%). There was no statistically significant relationship between the mothers' education level and the level of knowledge of the students about pubertal development (p>0.05). The main source for 18% of students was their teacher, but only 6% had a preference for their teacher providing education on this topic. Students who attained menarche preferred education about puberty to be given by health professionals and to both genders at the same setting (p<0.01). A total of 31.5% of students thought that the first symptom of puberty was acne. Half (50.7%) of the students did not know the time period between the beginning of puberty and menarche. The girls who had attained menarche were more knowledgeable about puberty, largely through their own experience. This study shows that schoolgirls have an insufficient level of knowledge about normal puberty. Education programs must be conducted for students and their parents.
