Steel wire rope can be frequently damaged by various factors. Although weak defect signal detection is the key to guarantee safety, current classic stochastic resonance (SR) models and methods are unavailable due to the complicated interference of noise. Thus, in this article, a novel E-exponential SR model and weak signal detection method are proposed. The principle of this model is first introduced from the perspective of Taylor expansion and nonlinear system analysis. Then, the model performance is simulated and evaluated by output signal analysis and chaos characterizations. Afterward, model comparison with different system parameters, experiments, and case studies regarding three typical wire rope defects inspection and weak signal recognition is conducted to demonstrate the validity of the novel method. Finally, the advantages and limitations of the proposed SR model are discussed.
To meet the great needs for MFL (magnetic flux leakage) inspection of drill pipes at wellheads, a lift-off-tolerant MFL testing method is proposed and investigated in this paper. Firstly, a Helmholtz coil magnetization method and the whole MFL testing scheme are proposed. Then, based on the magnetic field focusing effect of ferrite cores, a lift-off-tolerant MFL sensor is developed and tested. It shows high sensitivity at a lift-off distance of 5.0 mm. Further, the follow-up high repeatability MFL probing system is designed and manufactured, which was embedded with the developed sensors. It can track the swing movement of drill pipes and allow the pipe ends to pass smoothly. Finally, the developed system is employed in a drilling field for drill pipe inspection. Test results show that the proposed method can fulfill the requirements for drill pipe inspection at wellheads, which is of great importance in drill pipe safety.
The current methods of electric–magnetic flux leakage structural health monitoring that use tubular coils as electro-magnetizers fail to detect concrete rebar structures without a head and a tail. This article proposes a novel electric–magnetic flux leakage structural health monitoring technique for concrete rebar using open electromagnetic coils as magnetizers. Three-dimensional finite element simulations and experiments are conducted to compare the magnetization effect, defect-detection capability, and magnetic force interaction of traditional tubular coils and the proposed open electromagnetic coils. The agreement between the simulation and experimental results confirms the reliability and validity of the proposed structural health monitoring technique for concrete rebar. Additionally, two types of magnetizer coils are designed and manufactured using optimized structures, and both limitations and solutions are discussed. Overall, the proposed open magnetizer coils show great potential for future structural health monitoring applications for concrete rebar.
Magnetic flux leakage sensors have been widely used for the structural health monitoring of ferrous materials (structural health monitoring). This article provides a new magnetic flux leakage sensor based on open magnetizing method. Starting with the traditional yoke magnetization method analyses, the provided open magnetizing method and testing principle are presented. Then, the comparative analyses between the two methods are conducted by finite element method, indicating that the open magnetizing method features less magnetic interaction force, more uniform magnetic flux density for swing scanning, simpler architectures, and more universal functions under the framework of similar magnetic excitation capability for defects. Furthermore, the sensor based on open magnetizing method is designed through optimization and the advantages for open magnetization method are confirmed by experiments with created sensors. Finally, on-line structural health monitoring methodology for the monitoring probe with “rigid” open–close and “free” tracking rope-swing functions is developed based on the proposed sensors. Meanwhile, experimental comparisons between the open and yoke probes for on-line automated monitoring are also conducted to successfully confirm the characters of smaller magnetic interaction force, less wear, and damage in contrast to the traditional on-line automated structural health monitoring technology. Additionally, the on-line automated magnetic flux leakage apparatus for the structural health monitoring of hoist wire ropes is developed and applied, which further confirms the good practicability for the structural health monitoring of hoist ropes under the poor working conditions.
