We introduce an inverse procedural modeling approach that learns L-system representations of pixel images with branching structures. Our fully automatic model generates a compact set of textual rewriting rules that describe the input. We use deep learning to discover atomic structures such as line segments or branchings. Orientation and scaling of these structures are determined and the detected structures are combined into a tree. The initial representation is analyzed, and repeating parts are encoded into a small grammar by using greedy optimization while the user can control the size of the detected rules. The output is an L-system that represents the input image as a simple text and a set of terminal symbols. We apply our approach to a variety of examples, demonstrate its robustness against noise and blur, and we show that it can detect user sketches and complex input structures.

Context representations have been widely used to profit semantic image segmentation. The emergence of depth data provides additional information to construct more discriminating context representations. Depth data preserves the geometric relationship of objects in a scene, which is generally hard to be inferred from RGB images. While deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successful in solving semantic segmentation, we encounter the problem of optimizing CNN training for the informative context using depth data to enhance the segmentation accuracy. In this paper, we present a novel switchable context network (SCN) to facilitate semantic segmentation of RGB-D images. Depth data is used to identify objects existing in multiple image regions. The network analyzes the information in the image regions to identify different characteristics, which are then used selectively through switching network branches. With the content extracted from the inherent image structure, we are able to generate effective context representations that are aware of both image structures and object relationships, leading to a more coherent learning of semantic segmentation network. We demonstrate that our SCN outperforms state-of-the-art methods on two public datasets.

UAVs have become one of the widely used remote sensing platforms and played a critical role in the construction of smart cities. However, due to the complex environment in urban scenes, secure and accurate data acquisition brings great challenges to 3D modeling and scene updating. Optimal trajectory planning of UAVs and accurate data collection of onboard cameras are non-trivial issues in urban modeling. This study presents the principle of optimized views photogrammetry and verifies its precision and potential in large-scale 3D modeling. Different from oblique photogrammetry, optimized views photogrammetry uses rough models to generate and optimize UAV trajectories, which is achieved through the consideration of model point reconstructability and view point redundancy. Based on the principle of optimized views photogrammetry, this study first conducts a precision analysis of 3D models by using UAV images of optimized views photogrammetry and then executes a large-scale case study in the urban region of Qingdao city, China, to verify its engineering potential. By using GCPs for image orientation precision analysis and TLS (terrestrial laser scanning) point clouds for model quality analysis, experimental results show that optimized views photogrammetry could construct stable image connection networks and could achieve comparable image orientation accuracy. Benefiting from the accurate image acquisition strategy, the quality of mesh models significantly improves, especially for urban areas with serious occlusions, in which 3 to 5 times of higher accuracy has been achieved. Besides, the case study in Qingdao city verifies that optimized views photogrammetry can be a reliable and powerful solution for the large-scale 3D modeling in complex urban scenes.

Reliable and robust systems to detect and harvest fruits and vegetables in unstructured environments are crucial for harvesting robots. In this paper, we propose an autonomous system that harvests most types of crops with peduncles. A geometric approach is first applied to obtain the cutting points of the peduncle based on the fruit bounding box, for which we have adapted the model of the state-of-the-art object detector named Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Mask R-CNN). We designed a novel gripper that simultaneously clamps and cuts the peduncles of crops without contacting the flesh. We have conducted experiments with a robotic manipulator to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed harvesting system in being able to efficiently harvest most crops in real laboratory environments.
