Research on spatial cluster detection of traffic crash (TC) at the city level plays an essential role in safety improvement and urban development. This study aimed to detect spatial cluster pattern and identify riskier road segments (RRSs) of TC constrained by network with a two-step integrated method, called NKDE-GLINCS combining density estimation and spatial autocorrelation. The first step is novel and involves in spreading TC count to a density surface using Network-constrained Kernel Density Estimation (NKDE). The second step is the process of calculating local indicators of spatial association (LISA) using Network-constrained Getis-Ord Gi* (GLINCS). GLINCS takes the smoothed TC density as input value to identify locations of road segments with high risk. This method was tested using the TC data in 2007 in Wuhan, China. The results demonstrated that the method was valid to delineate TC cluster and identify risk road segments. Besides, it was more effective compared with traditional GLINCS using TC counting as input. Moreover, the top 20 road segments with high-high TC density at the significance level of 0.1 were listed. These results can promote a better identification of RRS, which is valuable in the pursuit of improving transit safety and sustainability in urban road network. Further research should address spatial-temporal analysis and TC factors exploration.
The rapid and accurate extraction of water information from satellite imagery has been a crucial topic in remote sensing applications and has important value in water resources management, water environment monitoring, and disaster emergency management. Although the OLI-2 sensor onboard Landsat-9 is similar to the well-known OLI onboard Landsat-8, there were significant differences in the average absolute percentage change in the bands for water detection. Additionally, the performance of Landsat-9 in water body extraction is yet to be fully understood. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct comparative studies to evaluate the water extraction performance of Landsat-9 with Landsat-8. In this study, we analyze the performance of simultaneous Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 data for water body extraction based on eight common water indices (Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), Augmented Normalized Difference Water Index (ANDWI), Water Index 2015 (WI2015), tasseled cap wetness index (TCW), Automated Water Extraction Index for scenes with shadows (AWEIsh) and without shadows (AWEInsh) and Multi-Band Water Index (MBWI)) to extract water bodies in seven study sites worldwide. The Otsu algorithm is utilized to automatically determine the optimal segmentation threshold for water body extraction. The results showed that (1) Landsat-9 satellite data can be used for water body extraction effectively, with results consistent with those from Landsat-8. The eight selected water indices in this study are applicable to both Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 satellites. (2) The NDWI index shows a larger variability in accuracy compared to other indices when used on Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 imagery. Therefore, additional caution should be exercised when using the NDWI for water body analysis with both Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 satellites simultaneously. (3) For Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 imagery, ratio-based water indices tend to have more omission errors, while difference-based indices are more prone to commission errors. Overall, ratio-based indices exhibit greater variability in overall accuracy, whereas difference-based indices demonstrate lower sensitivity to variations in the study area, showing smaller overall accuracy fluctuations and higher robustness. This study can provide necessary references for the selection of water indices based on the newest Landsat-9 data. The results are crucial for guiding the combined use of Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 for global surface water mapping and understanding its long-term changes.

Understanding population distribution has excellent applications for planning and provision of municipal services. This study aims to explore the space-time structure of population distribution with area-level mobile phone data. We discuss a kind of Bayesian hierarchical models, fitted by Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation, that combines the overall spatial pattern and temporal trends as well as the departures from these stable components. We carry out an empirical study in Shenzhen, China, using the area-level mobile phone users in 24 hours. The results indicate that the estimation of the overall spatial pattern is not deteriorated when using a sophisticated spatio-temporal model. The temporal trend exhibits a reasonable fluctuation during the study period. Then we apply two rules to detect areas showing unstable trends of population fluctuation based on the posterior probabilities of the space-time interactions. We also include the population statistics and indices for mixed-use to explore the spatial pattern of population fluctuation. Our findings confirm that the Bayesian spatio-temporal model can enhance the understanding of the space-time variability of population distribution using mobile phone data. Further research should examine the spatial nonstationary effects of explanatory factors on mobile phone-based population fluctuation.
Edge devices (EDs) carry limited energy, but 6th generation mobile networks (6G) communication will consume more energy. The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided wireless communication network can provide communication links to EDs without a signal. However, with the time-lag system, the EDs cannot dynamically adjust the emission energy because the dynamic UAV coordinates cannot be accurately acquired. In addition, the fixed emission energy makes the EDs have poor endurance. To address this challenge, in this paper, we propose a deep learning-based energy optimization algorithm (DEO) to dynamically adjust the emission energy of the ED so that the received energy of the mobile relay UAV is, as much as possible, equal to the sensitivity of the receiver. Specifically, the edge server provides the computing platform and uses deep learning (DL) to predict the location information of the relay UAV in dynamic scenarios. Then, the ED emission energy is adjusted according to the predicted position. It enables the ED to communicate reliably with the mobile relay UAV at minimum energy. We analyze the performance of a variety of predictive networks under different time-delay systems through experiments. The results show that the Weighted Mean Absolute Percentage Error (WMAPE) of this algorithm is 0.54%, 0.80% and 1.15% under the effect of a communication delay of 0.4 s, 0.6 s and 0.8 s, respectively.
How to maintain public transit safety and sustainability has become a major concern for the department of Road Traffic Administration. This study aims to analyze the risk factors that contribute to fatality in road traffic crashes using a 5-year police-reported dataset from the Wuhan Traffic Management Bureau. Four types of variables, including driving experience, environmental factor, roadway factor and crash characteristic, were examined in this research by a case-control study. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of crash fatality, this study explored a detailed set of injury-severity risk factors such as impact direction, light and weather conditions, crash characteristic, driving experience and high-risk driving behavior. Based on the results of statistical analyses, fatality risk of crash-involved individuals was significantly associated with driving experience, season, light condition, road type, crash type, impact direction, and high-risk driving behavior. This study succeeded in identifying the risk factors for fatality of crash-involved individuals using a police-reported dataset, which could provide reliable information for implementing remedial measures and improving sustainability in urban road network. A more detailed list of explanatory variables could enhance the accountability of the analysis.
In China, awareness about hypertension, the treatment rate and the control rate are low compared to developed countries, even though China’s aging population has grown, especially in those areas with a high degree of urbanization. However, limited epidemiological studies have attempted to describe the spatial variation of the geo-referenced data on hypertension disease over an urban area of China. In this study, we applied hierarchical Bayesian models to explore the spatial heterogeneity of the relative risk for hypertension admissions throughout Shenzhen in 2011. The final model specification includes an intercept and spatial components (structured and unstructured). Although the road density could be used as a covariate in modeling, it is an indirect factor on the relative risk. In addition, spatial scan statistics and spatial analysis were utilized to identify the spatial pattern and to map the clusters. The results showed that the relative risk for hospital admission for hypertension has high-value clusters in the south and southeastern Shenzhen. This study aimed to identify some specific regions with high relative risk, and this information is useful for the health administrators. Further research should address more-detailed data collection and an explanation of the spatial patterns.
