Understanding population distribution has excellent applications for planning and provision of municipal services. This study aims to explore the space-time structure of population distribution with area-level mobile phone data. We discuss a kind of Bayesian hierarchical models, fitted by Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation, that combines the overall spatial pattern and temporal trends as well as the departures from these stable components. We carry out an empirical study in Shenzhen, China, using the area-level mobile phone users in 24 hours. The results indicate that the estimation of the overall spatial pattern is not deteriorated when using a sophisticated spatio-temporal model. The temporal trend exhibits a reasonable fluctuation during the study period. Then we apply two rules to detect areas showing unstable trends of population fluctuation based on the posterior probabilities of the space-time interactions. We also include the population statistics and indices for mixed-use to explore the spatial pattern of population fluctuation. Our findings confirm that the Bayesian spatio-temporal model can enhance the understanding of the space-time variability of population distribution using mobile phone data. Further research should examine the spatial nonstationary effects of explanatory factors on mobile phone-based population fluctuation.

Oblique photogrammetry models are indispensable for implementing digital twins of cities. Geographic information system researchers have proposed plenty of methods to load and visualize these city-scaled scenes. However, when the area viewed changes quickly in real-time rendering, current methods still require excessive GPU calculation and memory occupation. In this study, we propose a data organization method in which we merged all quadtrees and used a binary encoding method to encode nodes in a merged tree so that the parent–child relationship between the tree nodes could be calculated using rapid binary operations. After that, we developed a strategy to cancel the loading of redundant nodes based on the parent–child relationship, which helped to reduce the hard disk loading time and the amount of memory occupied in visualization. Moreover, we introduced a parameter to measure the area of the triangle mesh per pixel to achieve unified data scheduling under different production standards. We implemented our method based on Unreal Engine (UE), and three experiments were designed to illustrate the advantages of our methods in index acceleration, frame time, and memory reduction. The results show that our methods can significantly improve visualization fluency and reduce memory usage.

China’s transportation industry has made great achievements in the past 40 years of reform and opening up. At the same time, it has gradually accumulated a series of problems. These problems have led to closer and more complex social and economic connection within and between regions of different scales. The existing research only carries out the characteristic analysis of urban network spatial connection and pattern from a single perspective such as “flow space” theory, spatial interaction model and accessibility method, and fails to accurately describe the complex socio-economic relations between regions. Based on the big data of railway passenger flow, this study selected weighted average travel time, railway network density, and the economic connection model to express the urban network spatial connection and structure of China in 2016 from the perspectives of time, space, and interaction. In 2016, the accessibility, connectivity, and total urban external economic connection of the railway network showed a trend of declining from the east to the west. The top 50 cities ranked by interurban economic connection were all located in the central and eastern regions and showed “diamond shape” distribution characteristics. The four diamond-shaped pairs were Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and Chengyu urban agglomerations. This shape was basically in line with the T-shaped space that has existed for a long time in China’s regional development. The accessibility, connectivity, and total external economic connection of national-level urban agglomerations were greater than those of regional-level urban agglomerations, and far greater than those of local-level urban agglomerations. The results showed that there was a mismatch between the layout of the railway network and the population. It will still be necessary to focus on strengthening the construction of transportation infrastructure in urban agglomerations and densely populated areas in the future. This study enriches the “flow space” theory, more fully describes urban network spatial connection and structure in China by considering the three perspectives of time, space, and interaction, and can provides reasonable suggestions for the development of national comprehensive three-dimensional transportation network planning, regional spatial structure optimization, and sustainable development.

Georeferencing by place names (known as toponyms) is the most common way of associating textual information with geographic locations. While computers use numeric coordinates (such as longitude-latitude pairs) to represent places, people generally refer to places via their toponyms. Query by toponym is an effective way to find information about a geographic area. However, segmenting and parsing textual addresses to extract local toponyms is a difficult task in the geocoding field, especially in China. In this paper, a local spatial context-based framework is proposed to extract local toponyms and segment Chinese textual addresses. We collect urban points of interest (POIs) as an input data source; in this dataset, the textual address and geospatial position coordinates correspond at a one-to-one basis and can be easily used to explore the spatial distribution of local toponyms. The proposed framework involves two steps: address element identification and local toponym extraction. The first step identifies as many address element candidates as possible from a continuous string of textual addresses for each urban POI. The second step focuses on merging neighboring candidate pairs into local toponyms. A series of experiments are conducted to determine the thresholds for local toponym extraction based on precision-recall curves. Finally, we evaluate our framework by comparing its performance with three well-known Chinese word segmentation models. The comparative experimental results demonstrate that our framework achieves a better performance than do other models.

The ongoing reform of China’s spatial planning system significantly influences the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. By fostering positive economic, social, and environmental interactions among cities, China has gradually established a coupled-networks to coordinate economic and ecological development. However, the current planning evaluation research usually focuses on the interior of the city, and lacks the evaluation of the planning convergence between different cities the integrity of this coupling deployment across different cities remains unclear. We conducted a systematic evaluation of China’s territorial spatial planning documents (encompassing 2715 county-level administrative units), constructing inter-urban socio-ecological networks by employing cities and districts as nodal units, with development-oriented partnerships and conservation-focused alliances explicitly stipulated in planning policies serving as social and ecological edges respectively. These networks were subsequently compared against multiple networks derived from land use/cover change (LUCC) analyses through multidimensional comparative analysis. Results show that 69.5% of the planned networks are supported by LUCC data; however, 10.4% of county nodes were overlooked by the spatial plans. Therefore, a broader city/county network should be constructed with a focus on poverty-stricken counties that have fewer opportunities, while also strengthening cooperation with bordering countries to improve the stability and completeness of the intercity network. This study provides a reference blueprint for sustainable city construction worldwide, particularly in developing countries.

Urban modeling and visualization are highly useful in the development of smart cities. Buildings are the most prominent features in the urban environment, and are necessary for urban decision support; thus, buildings should be modeled effectively and efficiently in three dimensions (3D). In this study, with the help of Gaofen-7 (GF-7) high-resolution stereo mapping satellite double-line camera (DLC) images and multispectral (MUX) images, the boundary of a building is segmented via a multilevel features fusion network (MFFN). A digital surface model (DSM) is generated to obtain the elevation of buildings. The building vector with height information is processed using a 3D modeling tool to create a white building model. The building model, DSM, and multispectral fused image are then imported into the Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) to complete the urban scene level, vividly rendered with environmental effects for urban visualization. The results of this study show that high accuracy of 95.29% is achieved in building extraction using our proposed method. Based on the extracted building vector and elevation information from the DSM, building 3D models can be efficiently created in Level of Details 1 (LOD1). Finally, the urban scene is produced for realistic 3D visualization. This study shows that high-resolution stereo mapping satellite images are useful in 3D modeling for urban buildings and can support the generation and visualization of urban scenes in a large area for different applications.
