Emerging digital technologies such as building information modeling (BIM) and the Internet of Things (IoT) have been widely adopted in construction projects and have attracted great attention from researchers and practitioners in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. To better understand the benefits of adopting digital technologies in construction projects from the sustainability perspective, this research investigated the impact of digital technology adoption on sustainability performance and proposed the mediating role of stakeholder collaboration based on organizational information processing theory (OIPT). Survey data were collected from managers and members of Chinese construction projects, and the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method was used to test the hypothesized relationships. The results show that digital technology adoption has direct effects on economic, environmental, and social performance and that stakeholder collaboration can directly influence only economic and environmental performance. Additionally, stakeholder collaboration partially mediates the relationship between digital technology adoption and economic and environmental performance. These findings enrich the current research on digital transformation and project sustainability management and provide managerial implications for how to realize the benefits of digital technology adoption in the AEC industry.

In the face of relentless global competition and regulatory pressures, the imperative for firms to digitally transform has become critical. This is particularly salient for Chinese manufacturing firms as they strive for sustainability, a multidimensional construct comprising both economic and environmental performance. Leveraging dynamic capabilities theory, this study aims to unravel the intricate interplay between digitalization, network capability, business model innovation (BMI), and environmental dynamism in shaping a firm’s sustainability performance. Our research is driven by a compelling question: How do digitalization and network capabilities impact firms’ sustainability performance, and what roles do BMI and environmental dynamism play in this relationship? To answer this question, we employed a robust survey-based methodology encompassing 1600 Chinese manufacturing firms, yielding 255 completed and validated responses. The findings reveal that network capability mediates the influence of digitalization on two types of BMI—novelty-centered and efficiency-centered. Further, these forms of BMI act as mediators between digitalization and network capability, and the two dimensions of sustainability: economic and environmental performance. Notably, environmental dynamism serves as a double-edged sword. It negatively moderates the impact of digitalization on efficiency-centered BMI, but positively moderates the influence of network capability on the same. Our study offers nuanced theoretical and practical implications. It extends dynamic capabilities theory by elucidating how digital and network capabilities can be leveraged for sustainable outcomes via business model innovation. Moreover, the research provides managerial insights, particularly for Chinese manufacturing firms, on navigating the complex landscape of digital transformation toward sustainability. Considering these insights, we recommend that firms prioritize network capabilities and strategically innovate their business models to harness the full potential of digital transformation. Simultaneously, organizations should be cognizant of the environmental dynamism within which they operate, as it can both hinder and enable their journey toward sustainability.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the antecedents of supply chain integration (SCI) at the product level. More specifically, it aims to show the relationship between product-level characteristics (i.e. product complexity and product variety) and different dimensions of SCI (i.e. internal, supplier and customer integration).Design/methodology/approach: A survey-based research design is developed to measure different dimensions of SCI, product complexity and product variety. The authors use structural equation modelling to test the related hypotheses.Findings: This research shows that internal integration is an enabler to supplier and customer integration. The results also show that under high product complexity, firms tend to implement internal and supplier integration, while product complexity does not have a direct impact on customer integration. Product variety is confirmed to be positively related to all dimensions of SCI.Originality/value: This paper contributes to the SCI literature by first, providing empirical evidence which supports the study of the product design-supply chain interface; and second, exploring the relationships between product complexity, variety and internal, supplier and customer integration based on a governance view.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to scrutinize the performance effects of supply chain risk management (SCRM). Besides financial performance, two aspects of operational performance are examined: operational efficiency and flexibility. Moreover, the authors explore the moderating role of supplier integration in the relationship between SCRM and operational performance. Design/methodology/approach: A survey-based methodology was adopted. Based on the data from an international survey, this study applied the structural equation modeling and latent moderated structural equations approach to test the hypotheses. Findings: The results indicate that SCRM positively influences both operational efficiency and flexibility, and has an indirect effect on financial performance. In addition, supplier integration enhances the impact of SCRM on operational flexibility, but does not moderate the relationship between SCRM and operational efficiency. Originality/value: This study extends the existing literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the performance effects of SCRM. It also provides managerial insights on both risk management and supplier integration.

Purpose: The risks associated with digital innovation increasingly challenge value co-creation among stakeholders within the innovation ecosystem. Stakeholder collaboration is helpful in preventing risk occurrence. This study intends to explore the effects of different stakeholder collaboration strategies on risk prevention performance in a digital innovation ecosystem context.Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature analysis was first conducted to identify risk factors of digital innovation based on the technology–organization–environment (TOE) framework. Then, a bidimensional network model was constructed to visualize the collaborative relationships among stakeholders and the identified risks by focusing on a digital innovation case. The social network analysis method was applied to design stakeholder collaboration strategies from the ego and global network perspectives, and a simulation approach was conducted to evaluate the effects of the strategies on risk prevention performance.Findings: The results validate the positive effect of stakeholder collaboration on risk prevention performance and reveal the important role of network reachability in formulating collaboration strategies. The strategy of strong–strong collaboration strategy can best enhance risk prevention performance like a “Matthew effect” in the digital innovation ecosystem.Originality/value: First, risk identification based on the TOE framework provides a systematic list of risk factors for future digital innovation risk management research. Second, this study designs stakeholder collaboration strategies from a network perspective to enhance the understanding of the network status of each stakeholder and the network structure of the digital innovation ecosystem. Third, the simulation results reveal the effects of different collaboration strategies on risk prevention performance.

Supply chain resilience (SCRES) plays an important role in dealing with disruptions in a highly turbulent business environment and has received a fair amount of attention from industry and academia. This study explores the relationships among control mechanisms (process, social, and outcome control), SCRES (proactive and reactive resilience), and sustainability performance (economic, environmental, and social performance). Structural equation modeling is used to analyze data collected from 322 Chinese manufacturing firms. This study finds that process control and social control have a positive impact on the two dimensions of SCRES, while outcome control has no significant impact on SCRES. Proactive and reactive resilience both have a significant positive impact on the three dimensions of sustainability performance. The results deepen the understanding of the enablers and performance of SCRES. They also provide managerial insights into how to use control mechanisms to build SCRES capability for sustainable development. JEL Classification: M1
