An electrospinning technique was used for the preparation of a bilayered wound dressing consisting of a layer of aliphatic copolyamide nanofibers and a layer of composite nanofibers from chitosan and chitin nanofibrils filler. Processed dressings were compared with aliphatic copolyamide nanofiber-based wound dressings and control groups. Experimental studies (in vivo treatment of third-degree burns with this dressing) demonstrated that almost complete (up to 97.8%) epithelialization of the wound surface had been achieved within 28 days. Planimetric assessment demonstrated a significant acceleration of the wound healing process. Histological analysis of scar tissue indicated the presence of a significant number of microvessels and a low number of infiltrate cells. In the target group, there were no deaths or purulent complications, whereas in the control group these occurred in 25% and 59.7% of cases, respectively—and, in the copolyamide group, 0% and 11%, respectively. The obtained data show the high efficiency of application of the developed composite chitosan‒copolyamide wound dressings for the treatment of burn wounds.

In this study, bioactive composite systems based on natural polymers (chitosan and lignin) were prepared in this study. The structural, mechanical, and morphological properties of chitosan-based materials containing various amounts of lignin filler were investigated. The infra-red IR spectroscopy data confirmed the formation of chemical bonds between the components of the obtained composites. The mechanical properties of film samples were studied in air and in physiological solution. It was demonstrated that the breaking elongation values of the obtained film samples in the wet state were higher (150–160%) than the corresponding (average) value of a pure chitosan film (100%). The scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy data demonstrated that the introduction of lignin had caused significant changes in the surface morphology of films. The appearance of a strongly pronounced texture and porosity facilitated cell proliferation on the surface of composites, i.e., the bioactivity of film samples was enhanced with an increasing lignin content in the chitosan matrix.

For the first time, a study of the influence of the molecular weight of the thermoplastic partially crystalline polyimide R-BAPB on the thermophysical and mechanical properties of carbon plastics was presented. The molecular weight of polyimide was determined using the method of light scattering and the study of the intrinsic viscosity of polyamic acid solutions. To obtain CFRPs, the uniform distribution of polyimide powder on continuous carbon fibers via electrostatic spraying and further hot calendering and pressing were applied. The study of the structure of the obtained carbon plastics via scanning electron microscopy has shown that the growth of the molecular weight of polyimide prevents the impregnation of carbon fiber with the introduced polyimide. Moreover, an increase in the molecular weight of polyimide leads to a rise in glass transition and thermal decomposition temperatures up to 590 °C, while the degree of crystallinity of CFRP falls. Nonetheless, raising the molecular weight from 22,000 to 70,000 g/mol of a binder polymer improves the interlayer fracture toughness G1C by more than five times.

Biocompatible electrically conducting chitosan-based films filled with single-wall carbon nanotubes were obtained. Atomic force microscopic studies of the free surface topography revealed a change in the morphology of chitosan films filled with single-wall carbon nanotubes. Introducing 0.5 wt.% of single-wall carbon nanotubes into chitosan results in an increase in tensile strength of the films (up to ~180 MPa); the tensile strain values also rise up to ~60%. It was demonstrated that chitosan films containing 0.1–3.0 wt.% of single-wall carbon nanotubes have higher conductivity (10 S/m) than pure chitosan films (10−11 S/m). The investigation of electrical stimulation of human dermal fibroblasts on chitosan/single-wall carbon nanotubes film scaffolds showed that the biological effect of cell electrical stimulation depends on the content of single-walled carbon nanotubes in the chitosan matrix.

Bioactive biodegradable chitosan films containing chitin nanofibrils have been developed for use as face masks in cosmetology. It was found that thermal modification of chitosan films promotes the transformation of the polymer into insoluble form without the use of alkali or aldehydes. The structure and properties of the films were studied by IT spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray structural analysis. Analysis of infrared (IR) spectra showed that the addition of nanofibrils accelerates the process of thermal transformation in the composite films. This is apparent from the observed increase in the intensity ratio of 1030 cm−1\1580 cm−1 peaks in the spectrum of the thermally treated film (as compared to the spectrum of the initial sample and the spectrum of a chitosan film without chitin nanofibrils). The prepared composite films containing chitin nanofibrils possess improved mechanical characteristics: tensile strength 99 MPa and tensile strain 14%. The tetrazolium bromide (MTT) test revealed good viability of human dermal fibroblasts cultivated in the presence of the conditioned medium obtained after incubation of all types of films in the nutrient medium. The used process of thermal modification of chitosan and composite films (which is efficient and environmentally safe) allows one to prepare bioactive materials for applications in medicine and cosmetology.

Composite chitosan fibers filled with chitin nanofibrils (CNF) were obtained by the wet spinning method. The paper discusses the mechanical properties of such type fibers and their hemocompatibility, as well as the possibility of optimizing these properties by adding chitin nanofibrils. It was shown that low CNF concentration (about 0.5%) leads to an increase in fiber tensile strength due to the additional orientation of chitosan macromolecules. At the same time, with an increase in the content of CNF, the stability of the mechanical properties of composite fibers in a humid medium increases. All chitosan fibers, except 0.5% CNF, showed good hemocompatibility, even on prolonged contact with human blood. The addition of chitin nanofibers leads to decrease in hemoglobin molecules sorption due to the decline in optical density at wavelengths of 414 nm and 540 nm. Nevertheless, the hemolysis of fibers was comparable or even lesser that carbon hemosorbent, which is actively used in clinical practice.
