The continuous bottom-simulating reflection (BSR) is commonly considered to mark the base of gas hydrate stability zone. Below this depth, gas hydrate gives away to free gas or water filling with pore spaces of sediments. We integrated and analyzed seismic data collected in 2008, and logging-while-drilling (LWD) data and coring results acquired by the Fugro Voyager in 2015 in the Shenhu area on the northern slope of the South China Sea. Based on seismic and well-log correlation, a BSR with typical characteristics of gas hydrates and free gas was identified at 237 m, below the mudline (BML). However, LWD data reveal a 63 m thick hydrate layer from 205 to 268 m BML. Increases in resistivity and velocity at 262 m BML indicate that gas hydrate is likely presented below the BSR. The observed pore-water freshening with depth and infrared image of core samples are consistent with geophysical interpretation. Seismic and well interpretations reveal continuous, discontinuous, and pluming BSRs in the Shenhu area. The continuous BSR indicates the base of the methane gas hydrate stability zone, and structure II gas hydrate is likely presented below the BSR. Deep thermogenic fluid locally entrapped within shallow-buried sediments may reinforce gas-hydrate accumulations near the discontinuous and pluming BSRs. We conclude that seismic responses of structure II gas hydrate can be distinct from structure I gas hydrate. Understanding the seismic characterizations of structures I and II will help in the evaluation of gas-hydrate reservoirs and inferring the presence of deep thermogenic reservoirs.

The amount of natural gas contained in the world’s gas hydrate accumulations is enormous, but these estimates remain highly speculative. So far, it is still challenging to locate spatial distribution of marine gas hydrate and quantitatively characterize the evaluation parameters and systematic improvement of evaluation systems. Considering the systematic review of the key accumulation factors, such as heat flow, deposition rate and total organic carbon in the typical passive continental margin, the evaluation results of global marine gas hydrate resources were analyzed based on the characteristics of gas hydrate geology, geophysics and geochemistry anomalies in the South China Sea. We analyze the problems on the evaluation of marine gas hydrate resources, probing into the geological characteristics and distribution laws of marine gas hydrate resources in the South China Sea, and estimate the parameters for in-place resource evaluation, in which the volume method based on Monte Carlo probability was used to evaluate the gas hydrate potential resources in the South China Sea. The probability distribution ranges from 37.6 billion (with 90% probability) to 117.7 billion (with 10% probability) tons of oil equivalent, with an expected value of 74.4 billion tons of oil equivalent. The study results show that the gas hydrate resource density in the South China Sea is similar to that in the typical sea areas, and the estimated global resources are basically consistent with the assessment results at this stag; this shows that the South China Sea has great potential for gas hydrate resources. The research results can provide guidance for the evaluation of global climate change and the exploration and development of hydrate resources.

There is widespread and growing scientific interest in the impact of massive gas hydrate dissociation on the global environment and climate in geological history. Based on that a global negative excursion of carbon isotopic compositions in marine (foraminifera) and terrestrial (the organic carbon and calcite) sedimentary records occurred during the penultimate deglaciation (~130 ka), we believe that methane released by hydrate dissociation may play a role in accelerating the initial increase of atmospheric methane. In order to prove that massive natural gas hydrate dissociation occurred in this period, we aim to seek for evidence of gas hydrate dissociation from seep carbonate. Here, X-ray diffraction, carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions, trace elements, and U-Th dating analyses were conducted on the deeply-buried authigenic carbonate obtained by drilling in the northern continental slope of the South China Sea. Authigenic carbonate formed at ~130 ka showed obvious characteristics of negative excursion of carbon isotope, positive excursion of oxygen isotope, and enrichment of redox sensitive elements such as Mo, U and As. These results, in particular the high oxygen isotopic compositions of carbonate, point to massive gas hydrate dissociation in the northern continental slope of the South China Sea during the penultimate deglaciation. It is further speculated that massive gas hydrate dissociation might have also occurred on a global scale, contributing to the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane concentrations during the penultimate deglaciation, and may eventually cause global carbon isotope negative excursion.

Mud volcanoes and diapirs are geological structures formed due to arch piercing or diapiric intrusion of ductile sedimentary materials into the overlying strata along high permeability channels. A detailed study on the processes controlling the formation of mud volcanoes and diapirs in the northern continental margin of the South China Sea is of vital importance to the exploration of economically viable oil and gas reservoirs and can be helpful to the exploration of natural gas hydrate in a sedimentary basin. The fluid seepage structures that occur in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary basins of the northern South China Sea show significant differences in their morphological and tectono-structural characteristics. We used high-resolution seismic profiles and instantaneous frequency profiles to understand the mechanisms that are critical with respect to the differential development of the investigated piercement structures. Differences in stress field do not directly lead to the difference in the scale of mud volcanoes or diapirs. Fractures may play an important role in the formation of mud volcanoes and diapirs. The thickness of the sediment was found to have a strong impact on the formation of fluid leakage structures that thicker sediments are more conducive to the development of mud diapirs and the thinner one is more likely to form mud volcanoes.
