Wear is one of the most common failures of hydrodynamic bearings. The main purpose of the present work was to investigate the effects of wear on lubrication performance and acquire efficient vibration signatures for fault diagnosis. In this paper, a finite element model (FEM) for a two-disk rotor supported on worn hydrodynamic bearings is presented in which the oil film force is evaluated by linear and nonlinear models. Numerical and experimental results indicate that the static and dynamic characteristics of the bearing are significantly changed by wear, leading to a drop in system critical speeds due to the deterioration of the constraint status provided by the bearings to the rotor. As the wear depth increases, the onset speed of oil whirl increases, while that of oil whip becomes lower, and large amplitudes of resonance and oil whip are more likely to be excited. More notably, all of the above vibration signatures in the y-direction are more sensitive to wear compared to those in the x-direction, which means that wear faults can be diagnosed by differences in vibration characteristics between the x- and y-directions. This research can provide a theoretical foundation and engineering guidance for the hydrodynamic bearing wear fault diagnosis.

This paper presents a hydrodynamic lubrication model to investigate the static and dynamic characteristics of micro-grooved bearings considering journal misalignment. An averaged Reynolds equation with the mass conservation is derived and numerical procedure is solved by the finite difference method. The influences of eccentricity ratio, misalignment and micro-groove parameters on lubrication performances of aligned/misaligned journal bearings are compared systematically. Mathematical expressions of five micro-grooves with different geometric shapes i.e., straight-groove, left spiral-groove, right spiral-groove, left herringbone-groove and right herringbone-groove are given. The results show that with the increase of degree of misalignment, the load carrying capacity, main stiffness and damping coefficients increase, and the friction coefficient decreases, while the effect of misalignment angle on bearing performance is opposite. The results also indicated that the left herringbone-groove has better performance improvement for aligned journal bearing, while the right spiral-groove has better performance improvement for misaligned journal bearing under the optimal micro-groove parameters, especially at low eccentricity ratio. Moreover, the amount of the performance improvement of micro-grooved bearing depends on the design of the micro-groove parameters. This study can provide theoretical guidance for the design optimization of micro-grooved journal bearings with misalignment.

During respiration, the expansion and contraction of the chest and abdomen are coupled with each other, presenting a complex torso movement pattern. A finite element (FE) model of chest breathing based on the HUMOS2 human body model was developed. One-dimensional muscle units with active contraction functions were incorporated into the model based on Hill's active muscle model so as to generate muscle contraction forces that can change over time. The model was validated by comparing it to the surface displacement of the chest and abdomen during respiration. Then, the mechanism of the coupled motion of the chest and abdomen was analyzed. The analyses revealed that since the abdominal wall muscles are connected to the lower edge of the rib cage through tendons, the movement of the rib cage may cause the abdominal wall muscles to be stretched in both horizontal and vertical in a supine position. The anteroposterior and the right–left diameters of the chest will increase at inspiration, while the right–left diameter of the abdomen will decrease even though the anteroposterior diameter of the abdomen increases. The external intercostal muscles at different regions had different effects on the motion of the ribs during respiration. In particular, the external intercostal muscles at the lateral region had a larger effect on pump handle movement than bucket handle movement, and the external intercostal muscles at the dorsal region had a greater influence on bucket handle movement than pump handle movement.

Water/steam direct injection is an effective method to lower emissions and improve the power of engines by using waste heat recovery (WHR). The parameters of water injection (WI) and steam injection (SI) were analyzed at compression stroke on the effect of brake power and emissions in marine engines, including injected timing, mass, and temperature. The results demonstrated that NOx emissions were substantially reduced by using WI method. However, brake power was also decreased. The SI method not only decreased NOx emissions but also improved brake power. The NOx emissions were ascended with increasing temperature and delaying injected timing of water. Opposing trends were found for SI method. The injected mass has a large effect on power and emissions compared with the influence of temperature and timing. The NOx emissions can be reduced by 72.8% with 2.08% power loss when the 20 g of water was injected into the cylinder at −50 °CA, 15 bar and 400 K. The NOx emissions can be reduced by 38.9% with 24.7% power improvement when the same mass of superheated steam with 500 K of temperature was injected into the cylinder. It can be obvious that SI method can increase power while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
