Suzuki Indomobil Motor Plant (SIMP) Cakung, East Jakarta, Indonesia generates wastewater containing heavy metals such as nickel, zinc, chromium, copper, and COD derived from the metal coating process using the electroplating system. Electroplating wastewater produced by this company contains Nickel and COD above the quality standards set by the Government of DKI Jakarta (Governor Regulation No. 69/2013). This research aims to analyze and compare the efficiency and kinetics of Nickel complexes and COD removal using the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) and Electrocoagulation (EC) method. Electroplating wastewater generated by SIMP Cakung (ratio of plating wastewater to overflow plating wastewater is 1:30) in this study had characteristics of 379-568 ppm (effluent standard = 75 ppm) of COD, and 87.555-121 ppm (effluent standard = 1 ppm) of Nickel. Preliminary experiments with the factorial design method indicated that independent variables (pH, current density, ozone flow rate, and contact time) had a critical influence/significance on the removal efficiency of Nickel complexes, while the influence of the above variables in COD removal efficiency was not significant. Optimum operating conditions for Nickel complexes and COD removal using both AOP and EC reactor were found in this study as well as the reaction kinetics of the removal rate. Our study found that the optimum operating conditions for Nickel complexes and COD removal using the AOP reactor were at the pH of 10, the ozone flow rate of 2 L/min, the contact time of 60 min (99.75% and 51.25% for Nickel and COD removal, respectively). For the EC reactor, the optimum condition for Nickel and COD removal are pH of 6.5, the current density of 20 mA/cm2 and the contact time of 50 min (99.75% and 51.25% for Nickel and COD removal, respectively). In these conditions, the AOP reactor in its optimum condition could remove Nickel and COD more compared to the EC reactor. This finding suggests that AOP technology is not only reliable in removing Nickel from electroplating industrial wastewater, but also it could reduce the loading of COD for further treatment units by more than 50%. Further studies in the effect of the longer contact time and higher ozone flowrate on COD removal is suggested.

The global spread of antibiotic resistance poses a significant threat to public health and is one of the main causes of this problem. Livestock farming plays a significant role in the horizontal and vertical transmission of treatment-resistant genes and bacteria. These processes involve contact with agricultural products and the environment, raising concerns for public health, and farming communities. The farming community is composed of a staggering 608 million farms worldwide, and their livelihood depends heavily on livestock farming. To address this issue, a multidisciplinary One Health approach focusing on integrated monitoring and intervention for humans, animals, and the environment is essential. Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) programs have the potential to significantly reduce the risk of exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, particularly extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) Escherichia coli, by obstructing the transmission route between humans and animals. Additional risk reduction measures for ESBL E. coli infection in animals include vaccination and biosecurity program implementation. Water, sanitation, and hygiene and biosecurity measures must be combined to maximize the effectiveness of the One Health program. Therefore, this study aimed to describe recent advances in biosecurity and WaSH interventions in the livestock environment, analyze the effects of these interventions on human and animal health, and investigate potential future scenarios within the quantitative microbial risk assessment framework. This study used an integrative literature review through searches of four databases, a review of World Health Organization documents through websites, and an examination of relevant texts from previously obtained reference lists. Although hygiene and sanitation are often combined, there is still a lack of quantitative evaluation of the efficacy of integrating WaSH with biosecurity in livestock. In addition, the integration of the WaSH program with biosecurity has potential as a One Health intervention in the coming years. Keywords: antibiotic-resistant bacteria, biosecurity, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase Escherichia coli, One Health, scenario, water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) contains a high concentration of various heavy metals and have low pH levels. In this study, the comparison between the use of natural zeolite and synthesized zeolite for Cu2+ removal in AMD was conducted. The adsorbent of natural zeolite was prepared through a chemical activating method by adding NaOH. While, synthesized zeolite was made from coal fly ash using a two-step method, fusion, and hydrothermal process. The AMD used in this study was artificially designed with the concentration of Cu2+ 100 ppm and pH ± 3. The adsorption experiment was carried out using a batch method to observe the influential parameters such as adsorbent dosage, contact time, adsorbent isotherms, and kinetics. The result show that the removal efficiency of Cu2+ for natural zeolite and synthesized zeolite was 98,16% and 93,98 % with optimum adsorbent dose 1,5 g/l and 21 g/l, respectively. The optimum contact time for both adsorbents was 120 minutes. The Langmuir isotherm model fitted the adsorption for synthesized zeolite and natural zeolite, with the maximum sorption capacity of 23,8 mg/g and 30,03 mg/g, and the kinetics model of pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order. The result of this study that the good adsorption effectivity synthesized zeolite. Furthermore, both natural zeolite and synthesized zeolite have great potential as a sustainable and economical material for heavy metal removal ion Cu2+ in wastewater.

One evidence of environmental pollution is the formation of acid mine drainage. In passive processing systems, the technique that is often used is phytoremediation because the costs incurred for this method are affordable and take advantage of natural ecosystems. In this study, the effectiveness of Typha latifoliain neutralizing acidity and removing heavy metal such as cadmium (Cd) is determined. Cadmium is one of the heavy metals that can be found in nickel, gold, and copper mining area. The acid mine drainage used in this study was artificially made with a concentration of 5and 10 mg/L with a pH of 4.pH testing was carried out using a pH meter and the accumulation concentration of Cd was analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results revealed that Typha latifolia planted on soil without fertilizer could increase the pH of acid mine drainage containing heavy metal Cd from 4 to ± 7 within 28 days.Typha latifolia can reduce the concentration of Cd in artificial acid mine drainage with the removal efficiency of 95 - 96%. The value of the Bioconcentration Factorin Typha latifolia exposed to acid mine drainage with concentrations of Cd 5 and 10 mg/L are > 1000, which means that this plant has the potential to be a heavy metal hyperaccumulator in phytoremediation.

The Citarum River is the most polluted river in the world. Heavy metals such as Zn, Cd, Cr, Mn and Fe are abundant in the environment and will disturb the sustainability and balance of the ecosystem caused by their toxicity. This is a major issue of concern in environmental science studies. This paper aims to determine the heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Cr, Mn dan Fe) levels of the Downstream Citarum River and has investigated the potential risk of heavy metals to human health from various components that pollute water by conducting literature studies. We found that the levels of cadmium and zinc exceed the quality standard threshold. Humans can be exposed to heavy metals from a variety of pathways. The risk of heavy metal poisoning depends on the amount of the dose that enters the body. Meanwhile, the dose increases with the concentration, duration and frequency of exposure and the way it enters the body. Meanwhile, the greater the exposure to heavy metals, the greater the risk of poisoning. Further efforts to reduce pollution and prevent the risk of pollution need to be made, not only by the government but also from all levels of society.
