Joaquim A. O. Barros is a full professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Minho University and coordinator of the Structural Composites Group. He is a fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and a voting member of ACI Technical Committees: 440-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Reinforcement and 544-Fiber-Reinforced Concrete. He is a member of the Technical Committees of the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib): TG 4.1 - Fibre Reinforced Concrete, TG 5.1 - FRP Reinforcement for Concrete Structures, TG 4.3 - Structural Design with Flowable Concrete, and convener of the fib TG 2.4.2 - Modelling of Fibre Reinforced Concrete Structures. He is a member of the International Union of Laboratories and an expert in construction materials, systems, and structures (RILEM: TC- 234-DUC –Design procedures for the use of composites in strengthening reinforced concrete structures). He was a council member of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC). He was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Australian “Design Guideline for RC structures retrofitted with FRP and metal plates: beams and slabs“. His research interests include structural strengthening, composite materials, fiber-reinforced concrete, and the development of constitutive models for the simulation of the behavior of cement-based and polymer-based materials, and their implementation in software based on the finite element method (FEM).
