The purpose of this paper is to review existing literature and show the state of the art regarding the factors that influence the entrepreneurial intention (EI) of individuals. It provides a synthesis/integration of previous research on the topic as a framework to identify shortcomings, new lines of research, and practical insights. The analysis conducts a systematic review of 177 papers in the SCOPUS database from 1994 to 2017. The findings highlight three themes regarding the factors that influence EI: personal-level variables, entrepreneurship education (EE), and contextual factors and institutional variables. Within each of these themes, cognitive factors such as self-efficacy; personality and psychological variables such as propensity/adversity to risk; and socio-demographic variables such as age, gender, and human capital seem to exert an influence, in addition to personal motivations and/or deterrents. EE appears to have the greatest influence in most cases; at least it helps to develop greater self-efficacy or a more favorable attitude toward entrepreneurship, among others. Finally, with regard to contextual and institutional variables, cultural and social contexts seem to have a clear influence on EI, along with informal institutions through the normative dimension. Although there are many studies on the “factors that influence EI,” this study is the first attempt to make a qualitative presentation on the state of the art. It makes practical suggestions to encourage entrepreneurship in universities and in retired individuals. It also makes recommendations for improvement and suggests new lines of research such as the importance of linking these three categories of factors that influence EI, with the evaluation of an international entrepreneurship.

The field of behavioral finance lacks a homogeneous and structured theoretical framework. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to further systematization in the field by analyzing the impacts of education, gender and age on investor behavior and sentiment. The study is based on online anonymous surveys given to 106 professional investors active in the Spanish market during February 2017. The survey includes control questions, seven questions regarding investors' sentiment to elaborate a confidence index and twenty questions concerning the practitioner's view of behavioral finance. We first identify a gap between the relevance of behavioral finance and the lack of education in the field. We also find a clear misalignment between the investors and their clients' profiles related to their level of confidence. In that regard, the use of the institutional investor confidence index mitigates self-perception bias and is a key element in determining investors' real profiles. Consistent with prior research, we find that female investors view themselves as more driven by rational analysis and are more risk averse while younger investors are more influenced by cognitive and emotional biases. As a key contribution, we establish a model to determine investors' sentiment, which shows that female and more experienced practitioners exhibit higher levels of optimism and confidence.

This research attempts to understand how the influence of specific dimensions of social capital may or may not have different effects on student entrepreneurial intentions in Spanish university environments (online and face-to-face). Based on Ajzen’s (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior, we attempt to integrate three elements of social capital (network ties as structural social capital, shared languages, and shared visions as cognitive social capital) to explain the significant or non-significant differences in entrepreneurial intentions between these two samples (online and face-to-face), given the role played by social capital in university environments and in the entrepreneurship process. Partial least squares-structural equation modelling has been employed to assess the research model and to perform multi-group analysis. Two non-parametric techniques have been used: Henseler’s MGA and the permutation test. Before performing the multi-group analysis, measurement invariance was evaluated using measurement invariance of composite models, which is a new approach to partial least squares-structural equation modelling. The data is obtained from a sample of 302 online and 204 face-to-face university students (undergraduate and master students). Findings suggest that although social capital has significant influence on entrepreneurial intentions in both environments, it is greater in the online students group than in the face-to-face group. This is due to the influence of cognitive social capital (shared languages and shared visions) on entrepreneurial intentions through the catalyst role played by structural social capital (network ties) and the principal components of the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitude towards behavior, perceived behavioral control, and subjective norms). This study makes a significant theoretical contribution by analyzing the different impacts of structural (network ties) and cognitive (shared languages and shared visions) social capital on the antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions in online and face-to-face university students.

Estimates of risk premium derived from classical financial theory have consistently shown deviations from the observed levels. These limitations have been linked to the rational foundations of these theories that rely on asset prices as the main information source. This article focuses on the need to increase the information available through the consideration of behavioural factors. Therefore, the paper proposes an alternative methodology to estimate the risk premium incorporating investor sentiment as a source of additional information. This model is tested on the US market with the objective of obtaining a more accurate measure of the risk premium that the one provided by classical financial approaches. It also offers an alternative explanation to risk–return relationship based on investment sentiment. Finally, the use of behavioural approaches to the treatment of the risk premium will favour the control of market anomalies such as the momentum effect.

There is a scarcity of research on the influence of structural -network ties (NT)-, cognitive -shared languages (SL) and shared visions (SV)- social capital (SC) dimensions on online studentś entrepreneurial intentions (EI). This paper, drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), examines this influence on a sample of 302 Spanish online university students (graduate and undergraduate). The technique employed to perform the analysis is Partial Least Squares (PLS) -Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Results confirm the key role played by SL and SV in the development of EI through the catalyst role played by NT and through the mediation of the main antecedents of the TPB. In conclusion, in online universities SL and SV are needed in order to ease students’ NT and increase their EIs and should be considered when designing the university strategy and the students’ syllabus.

PurposeBased on Azjen’s (1991) theory of planned behavior, the purpose of this paper is to complement the existing body of knowledge on entrepreneurial intentions (EIs) by comparing two different university environments in Spain (online and face-to-face) and their impact on EIs of university students using two components of social capital (SC), trust and network ties as variables with influence on the antecedents of EIs.Design/methodology/approachA survey was administered to online and face-to-face students yielding a total sample of 302 and 204, respectively. Partial least square–structural equation modeling is the technique employed to perform the analysis.FindingsSC has a significant influence on EIs in both environments with greater effects online, as a consequence of the mediated role played by network ties between trust and the attitude toward the behavior, the subjective norm and consequently, EIs.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors used a cross-sectional method. However, it would be interesting to obtain longitudinal data to provide a more valid support for the study.Practical implicationsThis study provides insight into the important role played by network ties based on trust in the entrepreneurship process and in the university environment.Originality/valueThis study contributes to understanding the differential impact of SC (trust and network ties) on the antecedents of EIs between the students enrolled in different university environments using two non-parametric techniques Henseler’s multigroup analysis and the permutation test.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, most of the forest fires that have occured in Spain have taken place in the northern region of Galicia. This area represents 5.8% of the Spanish territory, but compromises, in certain years, up to 50% of the total number of wildfires. Current research on forest fires is focused mostly on physical or meteorological characteristics, post-fire situations, and their potential destructive capacities (main areas burnt, type of vegetation, economic loses, etc.). However, the academic research to date has not delved into other socioeconomic factors (population structure, density, livestock farms, education, among others), which compromise the existing pre-fire situation in the affected territories, and subsequently reflect the prevailing vulnerability of the population. Indeed, these socioeconomic variables can influence fire occurrence, whether positively or negatively. To fill in this knowledge gap, this article analyzes the relationship between wildfire events and the socioeconomic variables that characterize the Galician municipalities affected. To that effect, first, a thorough examination and selection of the most relevant socioeconomic variables, and their subsequent justification will be carried out. Then, using IBM SPSS statistics 24, a linear regression is executed using the data of wildfires that occurred in Galicia between 2001–2015. The resulting model allows a better knowledge of the importance of the socioeconomic situation in Galician municipalities when wildfires occur. Therefore, this result identifies the existing relationship between the socioeconomic variables and wildfire events, and consequently will help to optimize the interventions that must be done. This may be the best way to carry out prevention actions in order to reduce vulnerability to forest fires.

This paper proposes a new investor sentiment indicator that combines the use of principal component analysis with web searches. This proposal provides economic meaning to the underlying variables, a sound factor structure, and reduces the noise regarding to web searches, when compared to standard search-based sentiment indicators. In fact, our indicator not only confirms the relevance of sentiment for future assets performance and provides greater predictive capacities than standard formulations, but also generates new insights in terms of globalization of investor sentiment and the role that information flows and technology play on that process. Moreover, it challenges some general beliefs present in the literature of sentiment such as the prevalence of a local bias, the greater impact of sentiment in developed markets or the fact that institutional investors are not sensitive to sentiment. Finally, an investment strategy is implemented showing how a sentiment-based investment rule generates above-market returns.

Student dropout is a major concern in studies investigating higher education retention strategies. However, studies investigating the optimal time to identify students who are at risk of withdrawal and the type of data to be used are scarce. Our study consists of a withdrawal prediction analysis based on classification trees using both sociodemographic and academic data from 935 first-year students at an engineering school in Spain. We build prediction models using information collected at three different moments throughout the first semester of the students’ first university year. Our results echo those of previous studies supporting the need for an early first-year intervention to prevent non-completion. In addition, academic performance data serve as a good predictor. Finally, academic monitoring throughout the first semester improves the prediction accuracy, challenging the demand for ‘as soon as possible’ identification of students who are at risk of dropout.

This work examines the co-occurrence of risk behaviors among Spanish adolescents. The analyzed behaviors were sexual activity, the use of alcohol and other drugs, violent conduct and behaviors related to driving mopeds or scooters. The sample consisted of 4,091 adolescents between the ages of 13 to 18, all of them enrolled in one of the four compulsory years of secondary education, the approximate equivalents of the 7th to 10th grades in the US educational system. Cluster analysis indicates that there are four risk profiles, one of which is the profile with the greatest risk and the highest co-occurrence of risk behaviors. This group represents 13% of the sample and is noteworthy for using illegal drugs, driving under the influence of drugs and other activities carried out under the influence of alcohol. Differences have been found among the various profiles according to sociodemographic characteristics such as sex, grade, perception of the family???s economic situation and ethnicity. The findings are discussed and some suggestions are given for prevention intervention.Este trabajo examina la concurrencia de comportamientos de riesgo en adolescentes espa??oles. This paper proposes a new model-based method to obtain a coincident indicator for the business cycle. A dynamic factor model with trend components and a common cycle component is considered which can be estimated using standard maximum likelihood methods. The multivariate unobserved components model includes a stationary higher order cycle. Also, higher order trends can be part of the analysis. These generalisations lead to a business cycle that is similar to a band-pass one. Furthermore, cycle shifts for individual time series are incorporated within the model and estimated simultaneously with the remaining parameters. This feature permits the use of leading, coincident and lagging variables to obtain the business cycle coincident indicator without prior analysis of their lead-lag relationship. Besides the business cycle indicator, the model-based approach also allows to get a growth rate indicator. In the empirical analysis for the Euro area, both indicators are obtained based on nine key economic time series including gross domestic product, industrial production, unemployment, confidence indicators and interest rate spread. This analysis contrasts sharply with earlier multivariate approaches. In particular, our more parsimonious approach leads to a growth rate indicator for the Euro area that is similar to the one of EuroCOIN. The latter is based on a more involved approach by any standard and uses hundreds of time series from individual countries belonging to the Euro area.

The annual average concentrations (1986-1997) of the major ions SO4(2-), NO3-, Cl-, NH4+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and K+ in precipitation are analyzed for selected EMEP stations. The objective is to determine the ion patterns or typologies in precipitation by principal component analysis (PCA) combined with a cluster analysis. SO4(2-) and NO3- ions are predominant in central and eastern Europe. This area corresponds to high emissions of SO2 and NO2. Sea spray ions are predominant in coastal sites. The soil components show an important contribution in southern Europe, possibly due to the soil dust transported from northern Africa.

The annual averages (1986–1997) of pH are analysed for the most important European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme stations in Europe. The first objective is to discover the different temporal patterns and trends for the pH. To do this, a cluster analysis is developed. The trends are analysed by linear regression for the annual averages. In general, the pH shows an increasing trend significant at 0.05 level and the annual change ranging from +0.01 to +0.05 pH‐units per year for the different clusters obtained. The second objective is to examine the spatial variability of pH in precipitation through the use of principal component analysis. Six statistically significant modes of variability are obtained for the pH which represent the 84.5% of the total variance.
