OBJECTIVES: This is the first study to evaluate the efficacy of parent training in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Turkey. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the positive parenting programme (Triple P) on ADHD symptoms, functionality, severity of disease, and behavioural and emotional problems of children. An additional aim was to evaluate the potential effects of Triple P on parental attitudes and family functioning of children with ADHD. METHODS: The study was a randomized controlled study. A total of 48 subjects aged between 7 and 12 years, who were diagnosed as ADHD by Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children Present and Life-time Kiddie (K-SADS-PL). Following randomization into two equal groups, mothers of the first group participated to Group Triple-P Programme while the second group was receiving no treatment. The two groups were compared right before and after the intervention on rates of ADHD symptoms, emotional, behavioural variables, family functioning and parental attitudes. RESULTS: When we compared the results before and after the implementation of Triple P in the intervention group, there was a statistically significant increase in CGAS scores, and a statistically significant decrease in CGI scores. There was a statistically significant decrease subscale scores of SDQ; and total score of the DuPaul Questionnaire; a statistically significant decrease in problem solving, communication, roles in family, affective sensitivity, behaviour controlling, and general functioning subscale scores in FAD; a statistically significant decrease of parenting attitude, hostility, and rejecting attitude, and authoritarian attitude subscale scores; and a statistically significant increase in democratic attitude subscale scores of PARI. CONCLUSION: The results of our study suggest that Triple P could be useful in the treatment of children with ADHD, but further studies about Triple P on children with ADHD are needed.

Studies have suggested that attachment styles are associated with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Recent studies found that individuals with a diagnosis of SAD were significantly impaired relative to healthy controls on tasks of theory of mind (ToM). We aimed to investigate the association of ToM and attachment styles in adolescents diagnosed with SAD in this study. Drug-naïve 42 adolescents diagnosed with SAD and aged between 12 to 18, without psychiatric comorbidity were enrolled in the patient group. Forty-two adolescents in the same age range without any psychiatric disorders were matched as the healthy control group. The diagnosis was made by experienced clinicians using the Kiddie and Young Adult Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia Present and Lifetime Version and diagnostic criteria of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition. The severity of SAD symptoms was evaluated with the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents. ToM was evaluated with Reading the Mind in the Eyes task and faces test. Parent and Peer Attachment Inventory was used for assessing attachment properties. Adolescents with SAD compared to healthy control groups have more difficulties both in Reading the Mind in the Eyes task and faces test. We found a statistically significant decrease in peer and parent attachment scores when compared with SAD and healthy controls (p<0.05). A negative correlation between the severity of SAD and both ToM tasks and attachment has been found. The results of this study indicate that ToM deficits and insecure attachment style may play an important role in the etiology and treatment of SAD in adolescents.

The Kahramanmaras earthquakes occurred on February 6, 2023. Two powerful earthquakes, occurring 9 hours apart, resulted in over 50000 deaths and affected more than 14 million people. This study assessed different characteristics among affected children and adolescents and identified vulnerable groups. This study aimed to evaluate post-earthquake psychiatric symptoms among children and adolescents, determine the prevalence of acute stress disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among affected children and adolescents, and identify personal and event-related factors that influence these outcomes. Patients admitted to the child psychiatry outpatient clinic or consulted from the emergency and pediatric inpatient clinics were evaluated for the effect of personal and event-related factors, including demographic variables, pre-event mental state, loss of relatives and assets owned, and medical/surgical requirements, on their mental health. The study revealed that sleep problems were prevalent as the primary psychiatric symptom among children and adolescents following the earthquake. The incidence of ASD remained similar between age groups, while PTSD was more commonly observed in adolescents. Patients experiencing the loss of family members or friends, as well as those whose homes collapsed or suffered extensive damage, and those who sustained physical injuries, exhibited a higher prevalence of ASD and PTSD compared to the other patients. Current findings reveal that the delivery of intensive psychological support in the early stages is crucial to prevent further mental problems in vulnerable groups following an earthquake.
