The Internet of Things (IoT) has gained significant recognition to become a novel sensing paradigm to interact with the physical world in this Industry 4.0 era. The IoTs are being used in many diverse applications that are part of our life and is growing to become the global digital nervous systems. It is quite evident that in the near future, hundreds of millions of individuals and businesses with billions will have smart-sensors and advanced communication technology, and these things will expand the boundaries of current systems. This will result in a potential change in the way we work, learn, innovate, live and entertain. The heterogeneous smart sensors within the Internet of Things are indispensable parts, which capture the raw data from the physical world by being the first port of contact. Often the sensors within the IoT are deployed or installed in harsh environments. This inevitably means that the sensors are prone to failure, malfunction, rapid attrition, malicious attacks, theft and tampering. All of these conditions cause the sensors within the IoT to produce unusual and erroneous readings, often known as outliers. Much of the current research has been done in developing the sensor outlier and fault detection models exclusively for the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), and adequate research has not been done so far in the context of the IoT. Wireless sensor network’s operational framework differ greatly when compared to IoT’s operational framework, using some of the existing models developed for WSN cannot be used on IoT’s for detecting outliers and faults. Sensor faults and outlier detection is very crucial in the IoT to detect the high probability of erroneous reading or data corruption, thereby ensuring the quality of the data collected by sensors. The data collected by sensors are initially pre-processed to be transformed into information and when Artificially Intelligent (AI), Machine Learning (ML) models are further used by the IoT, the information is further processed into applications and processes. Any faulty, erroneous, corrupted sensor readings corrupt the trained models, which thereby produces abnormal processes or outliers that are significantly distinct from the normal behavioural processes of a system. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the detecting sensor faults, anomalies, outliers in the Internet of Things and the challenges. A comprehensive guideline to select an adequate outlier detection model for the sensors in the IoT context for various applications is discussed.

The advancement of semiconductor fabrication technology and smart algorithms has allowed us to design and develop intelligent sensors with cognitive ability. Statistics reveal that in recent times the number of elderly people is increasing rapidly around the world and the situation is not going to ease in the foreseeable future. In this paper, we report a novel home monitoring system which is based on cognitive sensor network and is intended for elder-care application. The smart system consists of an optimum number of cognitive wireless sensors which are used to detect usage of electrical devices, bed usage pattern, flow of water, etc., and also incorporates a panic button. The cognitive sensors provide information that can be used for monitoring the elderly by detecting any abnormality pattern in their daily activities around the house. The system will generate and send an early warning message to the care giver, when an unforeseen abnormal condition occurs.

In smart farming sector, Internet of Things (IoT) based smart sensing systems are vulnerable to failure, malfunction, and malicious attacks. Also, sensors are deployed often in an alien and harsh environment. Here, the conditions are not well supportive which either causes the sensor to fail prematurely or gives unusual and erroneous readings, known as outliers. This effects the smart networks performance and decision-making ability in many ways. Therefore, it is important to accurately detect the IoT sensor behaviour in legitimate, faulty, and compromised or attack scenarios. To distinguish the sensor behaviour in different scenarios we have proposed a feasible approach using spatial correlation theory which is validated using Morans I index tool. We have used Classification and Regression Trees (CART), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models to test our approach. For real-time anomaly detection we have used an edge computing technology. We have compared the proposed approach, using Forest Fire real dataset, with the three existing recent works. Our results are promising in terms of accurate detection of IoT sensor behaviours in real-time. This will assist the precision farming industry in making better decisions to securely manage IoT field network, increase productivity, and improves operational efficiency.

Over the past few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has gained significant recognition to become a novel sensing paradigm to interact with the physical world. The sensors within the Internet of Things are indispensable parts and are the first port to capture the raw data. As the sensors within IoT are usually deployed in environments which are harsh, which inevitably make the sensors venerable to failure and malfunction. Beside sensor faults and malfunctions, the inherent environment where the sensors are usually installed could also make the sensor to fail prematurely. These conditions will make the sensors within the IoT to generate unusual and erroneous data, often known as outliers. Outliers detection is very crucial in IoT to detect the high probability of erroneous reading or data corruption, thereby ensuring the quality of the data collected by sensors. Data anomalies, abnormal data or outliers are considered to be the sensor data streams that are significantly distinct from the normal behavioural data. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey that can be used as a guideline to select which outlier model is adequate for the application in the IoT context.

A review of wireless sensors and sensor networks, especially for in-home monitoring of elderly people, has been presented in this paper. The characteristics of various sensors for monitoring applications have been studied. The requirements of the sensor for making a smart sensor network have been investigated. A typical in-house developed system for home monitoring and elder-care application has been presented. A few patents on the sensors for home monitoring have been reviewed.8 page(s
