When localizing the position of an unknown node for wireless sensor networks, the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) value is usually considered to fit a fixed attenuation model with a corresponding communication distance. However, due to some negative factors, the relationship is not valid in the actual localization environment, which leads to a considerable localization error. Therefore, we present a method for improved RSSI-based localization through uncertain data mapping. Starting from an advanced RSSI measurement, the distributions of the RSSI data tuples are determined and expressed in terms of interval data. Then, a data tuple pattern matching strategy is applied to the RSSI data vector during the localization procedure. Experimental results in three representative wireless environments show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The ultra-short baseline underwater positioning is one of the most widely applied methods in underwater positioning and navigation due to its simplicity, efficiency, low cost, and accuracy. However, there exists environmental noise, which has negative impacts on the positioning accuracy during the ultra-short baseline (USBL) positioning process, which results in a large positioning error. The positioning result may lead to wrong decision-making in the latter processing. So, it is necessary to consider the error sources, and take effective measurements to minimize the negative impact of the noise. In our work, we propose a USBL positioning system with Kalman filtering to improve the positioning accuracy. In this system, we first explore a new kind of element array to accurately capture the acoustic signals from the object. We then organically combine the Kalman filters with the array elements to filter the acoustic signals, using the minimum mean-square error rule to obtain accurate acoustic signals. We got the high-precision phase difference information based on the non-equidistant quaternary original array and the phase difference acquisition mechanism. Finally, on account of the obtained accurate phase difference information and position calculation, we determined the coordinates of the underwater target. Comprehensive evaluation results demonstrate that our proposed USBL positioning method based on the Kalman filter algorithm can effectively enhance the positioning accuracy.

Ship detection based on remote sensing images holds significant importance in both military and economic domains. Ships within such images exhibit diverse scales, dense distributions, arbitrary orientations, and narrow shapes, which pose challenges for accurate recognition. This paper introduces an improved S2A-Net (Single-shot Alignment Network) based oriented object detection algorithm for ship detection. In network structure, pyramid squeeze attention is embedded in order to focus on key features and a context information module is designed to enhance the context understanding capability of the network. In the training strategy, considering the distortion problems such as blurring and low contrast in remote sensing images, a fog density and depth decomposition-based unpaired image dehazing network D4 is adopted to improve the image quality, besides, an image weight sampling strategy is proposed to enhance the training opportunities of small and difficult samples, thereby mitigating the issue of imbalanced ship category distribution. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved S2A-Net algorithm achieves the mean average precision of 77.27% for ship detection in the FAIR1M dataset, which is 5.6% better than the original S2A-Net algorithm, and outperforms the current common object detection algorithms.

As a classic positioning algorithm with a simple principle and low computational complexity, the trilateration positioning algorithm utilizes the coordinates of three anchor nodes to determine the position of an unknown node, which is widely applied in various positioning scenes. However, due to the environmental noise, environmental interference, the distance estimation error, the uncertainty of anchor nodes’ coordinates, and other negative factors, the positioning error increases significantly. For this problem, we propose a new trilateration algorithm based on the combination and K-Means clustering to effectively remove the positioning results with significant errors in this paper, which makes full use of the position and distance information of the anchor nodes in the area. In this method, after analyzing the factors affecting the optimization of the trilateration and selecting optimal parameters, we carry out experiments to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm. We also compare the positioning accuracy and positioning efficiency of the proposed algorithm with those of other algorithms in different environments. According to the comparison of the least-squares method, the maximum likelihood method, the classical trilateration and the proposed trilateration, the results of the experiments show that the proposed trilateration algorithm performs well in the positioning accuracy and efficiency in both light-of-sight (LOS) and non-light-of-sight (NLOS) environments. Then, we test our approach in three realistic environments, i.e., indoor, outdoor and hall. The experimental results show that when there are few available anchor nodes, the proposed localization method reduces the mean distance error compared with the classical trilateration, the least-squares method, and the maximum likelihood.

For wireless sensor networks, sensing data without location information are useless for future processing and decision-making systems. A wireless localization method can provide critical position information for the sensing data in the coverage field. Trilateration localization is applied widely in many systems due to its low cost and widespread availability. However, there are many negative factors that lead to low localization accuracy. Many improved versions of trilateration localization, including the weighted trilateration localization, the trilateration centroid localization, and other related methods, have been proposed to improve localization accuracy. However, these methods do not consider the influence mechanism of the negative factors, and the localization results are unsatisfactory. In this paper, considering the uncertainty propagation mechanism during trilateration localization, we propose an improved trilateration localization method with minimum uncertainty propagation and optimized selection of anchor nodes (ITL-MEPOSA). In this method, we consider the uncertainty propagation from distance estimation to localization calculation and evaluate the uncertainty propagation of each distance estimation result. Then, we utilize a single scan-sliding window with an optimized algorithm to select anchor nodes with minimum uncertainty propagation. Finally, based on the selected anchor nodes and their corresponding distance estimation results, an accurate localization result can be obtained through the least square criterion. The simulations and experimental results show that the proposed method can obtain high localization accuracy with acceptable efficiency.

For communication distance estimations in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) value is usually assumed to have a linear relationship with the logarithm of the communication distance. However, this is not always true in reality because there are always uncertainties in RSSI readings due to obstacles, wireless interferences, etc. In this paper, we specifically propose a novel RSSI-based communication distance estimation method based on the idea of interval data clustering. We first use interval data, combined with statistical information of RSSI values, to interpret the distribution characteristics of RSSI. We then use interval data hard clustering and soft clustering to overcome different levels of RSSI uncertainties, respectively. We have used real RSSI measurements to evaluate our communication distance estimation method in three representative wireless environments. Extensive experimental results show that our communication distance estimation method can effectively achieve promising estimation accuracy with high efficiency when compared to other state-of-art approaches.
