Scour induced by currents is one of the main causes of the bridge failure in rivers. Fundamental knowledge and mechanisms on scour processes due to currents are often taken as a basis for scour studies, which are the focus of this review. Scour development induced by waves and in combined wave–current conditions are also briefly discussed. For the design of structure foundations, the maximum scour depths need to be estimated. The mechanisms of local scour and predictions of maximum local scour depths have been studied extensively for many years. Despite the complexity of the scour process, a lot of satisfying results and progresses have been achieved by many investigators. In order to get a comprehensive review of local scour for vertical piles, major progresses made by researchers are summarized in this review. In particular, maximum scour depth influencing factors including flow intensity, sediments, pile parameters and time are analyzed with experimental data. A few empirical equations referring to temporary scour depth and maximum scour depth were classified with their expressing forms. Finally, conclusions and future research directions are addressed.

Extreme significant wave heights are assessed in the South China Sea (SCS), as assessments of wave heights are crucial for coastal and offshore engineering. Two significant factors include the initial database and assessment method. The initial database is a basis for assessment, and the assessment method is used to extrapolate appropriate return-significant wave heights during a given period. In this study, a 40-year (1975–2014) hindcast of tropical cyclone waves is used to analyse the extreme significant wave height, employing the peak over threshold (POT) method with the generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) model. The peak exceedances over a sufficiently large value (i.e. threshold) are fitted; thus, the return-significant wave heights are highly dependent on the threshold. To determine a suitable threshold, the sensitivity of return-significant wave heights and the characteristics of tropical cyclone waves are studied. The sample distribution presents a separation that distinguishes the high sample from the low sample, and this separation is within the stable threshold range. Because the variation in return-significant wave heights in this range is generally small and the separation is objectively determined by the track and intensity of the tropical cyclone, the separation is selected as a suitable threshold for extracting the extreme sample in the tropical cyclone wave. The asymptotic tail approximation and estimation uncertainty show that the selection is reasonable.

Foundation scour is the erosion of sediments around pile foundations by wave and current in offshore wind energy. This phenomenon destabilizes foundations and poses a threat to pile safety. Therefore, scour protection becomes a crucial challenge in offshore wind projects. This paper reviews and synthesizes recent publications and patented technologies related to scour protection. Considering the primary engineering concerns, the paper proposes design principles for effective scour protection schemes to standardize evaluation criteria. These principles prioritize efficacy, independence, and cost-efficiency, enabling the analysis of scour protection scheme applicability. In addition, this paper summarizes and describes common protection schemes in the literature. The effectiveness of their protection is analyzed and summarized, and their economic and performance independence is evaluated. This paper categorizes flow-altering scour protection schemes found in the literature. Based on a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms and engineering requirements of scour protection, the paper proposes a focus on determining the erosion reduction rate curve (Ep−U/Uc curve) as a key criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of protection schemes under varying flow velocities and the erosion reduction rate of scour protection schemes under extreme conditions. The study highlights the necessity of establishing a comprehensive design evaluation methodology, which is crucial for addressing the significant challenges related to scour encountered in offshore wind power projects.

Current-induced local scour around pile groups weakens the capacity of structures. In this paper, experimental tests of local scour around an array of 5 × 5 pile groups were conducted in a steady current in a hydraulic flume. The pile-to-pile space was five times the diameter of a single pile. All the tests were in clear-water scour conditions. The effects of upstream piles on the local scour characteristics of downstream piles, as well as the outer-arranged side piles on the inner-arranged piles, were studied within flow intensities of 0.37–1.0. Both the three-dimensional topography of bed elevation changes and the maximum temporal scour depths are discussed. The results showed that the minimum threshold of flow intensity that can induce local scour around the pile groups was 0.40. The scour holes were independent of each other, though a global scouring phenomenon occurred between piles at a flow intensity of 1.0. The temporal scour depths of the downstream piles increased slowly throughout the local scour processes. During the initial scouring stage, they accelerated rapidly. At flow intensities of 0.60, 0.80, and 1.0, the scour development then progressed gradually, resembling the behavior of a single pile. The developing scouring stage can hardly be distinguished in the case of flow intensity of 0.80. The maximum scour depths in the flow intensity of 0.60 showed irregular variations with increasing row and column numbers. The equilibrium scour depths in the central-positioned piles tended to a constant value of 0.5 times the pile diameter. In larger flow intensities of 0.80 and 1.0, they decreased linearly with pile row number, with the maximum scour depths at the piles in the first row. The local scour depths of the inner-positioned piles in the parallel arrangement showed few differences at the front and rear piles.
