We propose a new computational method to calculate the storage elastic energy value of surrounding rocks based on numerical simulation and theoretical calculation. By calculating the difference value in energy under different force states and comparing them with the energy level when rock burst occurs, we get the mechanism of rock burst: when roadway and surrounding rocks are in the condition of large ratio bias force field, certain triggering stress causes mass release of the elastic energy of surrounding rocks around the roadway, and when the energy reaches a certain level, rock burst will occur. We also put forward the specific force field conditions and triggering stress values of rock burst, which is of great guiding significance for the mechanism disclosure, monitoring, and control of rock burst.

Rock burst monitoring of heading face is a weak aspect of rock burst monitoring in China; acoustic emission (AE) monitoring is one of the few monitoring technologies used in heading face, but its target signals are small energy events which are easy to be disturbed. Researchers usually focus on the weak AE events but ignore the microseismic (MS) events (different from AE event and caused by a larger scale of coal fracture), while this kind of events can also reflect the pressure situation of heading face and have higher energy value which may become a better indicator for rock burst monitoring of heading face. So, the basic characteristics of MS events in heading face are studied based on a running vibration signal acquisition system, including the occurrence position, main frequency range, maximum amplitude (MA) range, event duration, and relationship with geological structure. This paper provides a development basis of the monitoring method for rock burst monitoring of heading face by using MS events.

Aiming at the surrounding rock failure of heterogeneous and unequal pressure circular roadways, the approximate analytical algorithm of the plastic zone is proposed. Through the comparison of analytical calculations and numerical simulation, the shape characteristics and evolution law of the surrounding rock’s plastic zone are studied, and the relative error of the two calculation methods is analyzed. The results show the following: (1) With an increase or decrease in the lateral pressure coefficient, the shape of the plastic zone of the roadway-surrounding rock presents a circular-ellipse-butterfly shape change law, and the outer edge of the plastic zone presents a scattered shape, without a continuous boundary. (2) In the butterfly-shaped plastic zone, the butterfly leaf always lies between the maximum confining pressure and the minimum confining pressure and rotates with the pressure. (3) There is a certain amount of error between the maximum value of the plastic zone solved by an analytical algorithm and numerical simulation, and the relative error is positively related to the burial depth and lateral pressure coefficient of the roadway and negatively related to the strength of the surrounding rock. (4) In addition, the relative error of the plastic zone calculation of the multi-layer heterogeneous combination roadway is larger than that of the single heterogeneous roadway.

Microseismic (MS) monitoring is an important and commonly used geophysical method in coal mines to predict rock burst which has great influence on safety production. MS monitoring technology and analysis method of the whole mine or working face have been matured, but its use in heading faces of coal mine is not mature due to small disturbances and narrow layout spaces. To carry out MS monitoring and early warning in the heading face, signal recognition must be adequately performed first, and monitoring objects and indicators must be obtained. Through field tests of MS systems at the 117 track gateway of Tengdong coal mine, interference signals of equipment operation and effective signals of coal vibration are accurately collected. After analysis, the waveform characteristics, spectrum, and propagation distance of the interference signals and coal vibration signal are different. Some effective signals with small energy (one‐channel triggering) cannot be used as early warning indicators because they are concealed by interference signals. Through trial operation, it is found that large energy (three‐channel and four‐channel triggering) coal vibration events successfully predicted a rock burst. The MS system of 117 track gateway of Tengdong coal mine should be able to remove the interference signals in real time through the algorithm and take the number of large energy coal vibration signal rather than all coal vibration events as the predictor for rock burst risk monitoring.
