Radio-over-fiber technology provides a simpler pathway for the distribution of wireless signals in broadband wireless networks via optical means. The technology has evolved over the last thirty years, with many challenges already overcome and with many more to address. This paper provides an overview of the technology evolutionary path of RoF with a review of its past, evaluation of its present and a discussion of its challenges into the future.

The fifth generation (5G) wireless technology is designed to provide significantly faster Internet access, with lower latency, and ubiquitous mobile coverage compared to its predecessors. However, as there will be hundreds and thousands of wireless cells deployed in the 5G network, transporting the enormous volume of data instigated from high capacity 5G wireless cells to the core network in a cost-effective and greener manner with a low latency still remains one of the major hurdles. Therefore, in this paper, we exploit different optical transport network architectures and technologies that can be used to build an efficient fronthaul network for 5G, in order to carry data between wireless cells and the central office. Particularly, we equitably compare multiple fronthaul architectures in terms of major requirements of 5G fronthaul network such as bandwidth requirements, delay budgets, deployment costs, complexity of radio remote head (RRH), and the ability to support advanced wireless functions. In order to analyze the deployment cost of entire 5G transport and wireless networks, we develop a joint optimization framework to optimally deploy fiber-based fronthaul network and 5G wireless network simultaneously. Our framework is also capable of setting limits on the required network coverage and capacity. We analyze the optimal deployment costs under different deployment scenarios and different fronthaul technologies. Our analyses provide insights into modeling future-proof optical transport networks to realize 5G network deployment.

The optical wireless communication (OWC) technology explores the broad unregulated optical spectrum to provide high-speed wireless communications, and the visible, ultraviolet and near-infrared wavelength ranges all have been investigated. Compared with the conventional radio frequency (RF) band, the spectrum in OWC systems is much less congested and the interference is much lower. The OWC technology also provides enhanced physical layer security due to the natural confinement of optical beams that makes it difficult to intercept the transmitted signal. Hence, the OWC technology has been widely studied and considered as a promising candidate in future beyond-5G communications. The OWC technology has been considered for both long-range and short-range applications, and in this paper we will introduce the fundamentals and recent developments of short-range OWC systems. In particular, we will focus on the key short-range OWC applications in indoor personal or local area communications, underwater wireless communications, wireless data center networks, and vehicular communications. We will also introduce some recent widely studied advanced techniques to boost the performance of short-range OWC systems, including the spatial domain diversity, multiplexing and modulation principles to improve the system robustness and data rate, and the machine learning algorithms and hardware accelerators to suppress both linear and nonlinear effects to improve OWC signal quality and bit-error-rate performance.

Radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology is a hybrid technology which was first introduced to the telecommunication arena in the eighties. The research topics have evolved over the last three decades with initial focus of backhaul transport to current focus of mobile fronthaul. This paper aims to provide an overview of the present research areas in RoF and discuss our recent work that highlights the benefits of centralized control configuration of RoF based fronthaul. The challenges and the future outlook of this research field will also be discussed.

The fifth generation (5G) of mobile technology, 5G is anticipated to be a significant leap in the evolution of mobile communication. 5G will be designed to attain 1000 times higher data volumes, 10 times lower latency, and 100 times more connected devices than its predecessor, 4G. Due to 5Gs ability to sustain high bandwidth per unit area, 5G is considered to be a cost-efficient solution to provide fixed wireless access (FWA) to households on a large scale. FWA is seen as an attractive alternative for fixed broadband access in scenarios where last mile access based on wired technologies is not economically viable. While approaches for enhancing user experience in a 5G FWA environment are investigated in the research community, the problem of providing cost-effective high capacity transport for FWA deployments still remains a major challenge. This is particularly challenging due to diverse transport network architectures and requirements imposed by different 5G deployment models. This paper addresses this problem by formulating a generalized joint-optimization framework to simultaneously plan wireless access and optical transport for 5G FWA networks in order to minimize the deployment cost while meeting various network requirements. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework by applying it to a real scenario with a range of deployment options and where different types of optical x-haul solutions are considered. The results provide a cornerstone for deployment strategies that will be imperative for realizing a future-proof and cost-effective broadband access network.

The radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology which was first introduced in the late eighties has evolved over time and is now considered as a possible solution for future wireless transport. The exponential growth in mobile user applications and their diverse requirements demand the future wireless and its transport network to be more intelligent, software-defined, and ubiquitous to provide immersive, high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and hyper reliable communication. These evolutions mandate rethinking of the design and development of physical layer and upper layer of RoF technologies. This paper reviews the past and current developments of RoF technologies and summarizes the challenges that the technologies can potentially face in the future to support beyond 5G networks and their requirements.
