Although many multi-source precipitation products (MSPs) with high spatiotemporal resolution have been extensively used in water cycle research, they are still subject to various biases, including false alarm and missed bias. Precipitation merging technology is an effective means to alleviate this uncertainty. However, how to efficiently improve precipitation detection efficiency and precipitation intensity simultaneously is a problem worth exploring. This study presents a two-step merging strategy based on machine learning (ML) algorithms, including gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and random forest (RF). It incorporates six state-of-the-art MSPs (GSMaP, IMERG, PERSIANN-CDR, CMORPH, CHIRPS, and ERA5-Land) and rain gauges to improve the accuracy of precipitation identification and estimation from 2000 to 2017 over China. Multiple environment variables and spatial autocorrelation are combined in the merging process. The strategy first employs classification models to identify wet and dry days and then combines regression models to predict precipitation amounts based on classified wet days. The merged results are compared with traditional methods, including multiple linear regression (MLR), ML regression models, and gauge-based Kriging interpolation. A total of 1680 (70 %) rain gauges are randomly chosen for model training and 692 (30 %) for performance evaluation. The results show that (1) the multi-source merged precipitation products (MSMPs) outperformed all original MSPs in terms of statistical and categorical metrics, which substantially alleviates the temporal and spatial biases. The modified Kling–Gupta efficiency (KGE), critical success index (CSI), and Heidke Skill Score (HSS) of original MSPs are improved by 15 %–85 %, 17 %–155 %, and 21 %–166 %, respectively. (2) The spatial autocorrelation plays a significant role in precipitation merging, which considerably improves the model accuracy. (3) The performance of MSMPs obtained by the proposed method is superior to MLR, Kriging interpolation, and ML regression models. The XGBoost algorithm is recommended more for large-scale data merging owing to its high computational efficiency. (4) The two-step merging strategy performs better when higher-density gauges are used to model training. However, it has strong robustness and can also obtain better performance than original MSPs even when the gauge number is reduced to 10 % (237). This study provides an accurate and reliable method to improve precipitation detection accuracy under complex climatic and topographic conditions. It could be applied to other areas well if rain gauges are available.

Biochar modification can enhance the properties associated with porosity and functional groups and has been identified as an effective way to improve adsorption capacity. Modified corncob biochars pretreated by different contents of MgCl2 are obtained through slow pyrolysis; then, this work explores the adsorption abilities towards heavy metals. After modification, biochars mainly impregnate carbon surface with Mg(OH)2 and MgO particles. The best mass ratio of magnesium (Mg)/feedback is 15% for modified biochar, and 15%Mg-BC has much higher (2.36–9.34 times) metal sorption capacity than pristine biochar. Batch adsorption experiments show that copper (Cu(II)) and lead (Pb(II)) on adsorbents follow a pseudo-second-order model and cadmium (Cd(II)) follows an intraparticle diffusion model. The adsorption isotherm of Cu(II) fits well with the Langmuir model, and Pb(II) and Cd(II) fit with the Freundlich model. In the binary system, modified biochar still effectively removes metals, but the sorption capacity of metals decreases rapidly because of competitive sorption. The main adsorption mechanisms of metals include surface precipitation, cation π-banding, complexation, and ion exchange. The results show that Mg-modified biochar may be an environmentally friendly material for reducing the water pollution of heavy metals.

Multi-source soil moisture (SM) products provide a vigorous tool for the estimation of soil moisture on a large scale, but it is crucial to carry out the evaluation of those products before further application. In the present work, an evaluation framework on multi-source SM datasets over central and eastern agricultural areas of China was firstly proposed, based on a dense in situ SM monitoring network of 838 stations from 11 July 2012 to 31 December 2017. Each station adopted the most accurate gravimetric method for measuring the actual soil moisture. The effects of land use types and wet–dry conditions on the performances of multi-source SM products were further analyzed. Most satellite/reanalysis SM products could capture the spatial–temporal changes in soil moisture, especially for ERA5 products that matched the closest to the station-measured SM; by contrast, those satellite products showed poor spatial–temporal performances. Such phenomenon was also quantitatively demonstrated by the four statistical metrics correlation coefficient (CC), p-value, bias and root mean squared error (RMSE) between the satellite/reanalysis SM products and the ground-observed SM series. Further, most satellite/reanalysis SM products had poor performances in Forestland and Grassland areas, with a lower CC and a larger positive bias and RMSE. Such overestimation on soil moisture is possibly influenced by the inestimable parameter vegetation geometry and the vegetation water content in the radiative transfer models. The arid areas showed the worst CC between the station-observed SM data and different satellite/reanalysis SM products; meanwhile, the humid and semi-arid areas presented larger SM estimation errors than the other areas, especially for the satellite products. The fairly dry surface soil (arid area) and open water surface contamination (humid area) are suggested to hinder the reading of microwave-based retrieval systems. Additionally, the reanalysis SM products outperformed the satellite SM products in the evaluated areas, with better spatial–temporal performances, seasonality reflection and higher accuracy on SM estimation (higher CC, and lower bias and RMSE). This is because the reanalysis datasets assimilated various sources of datasets, especially the ground-observed data, with high quality. The evaluated results could provide guidance for fusing different satellite/reanalysis products, as a new feasible alternative to monitoring SM information in the future.

Flood management is an important topic worldwide. Precipitation is the most crucial factor in reducing flood-related risks and damages. However, its adequate quality and sufficient quantity are not met in many parts of the world. Currently, near real-time satellite precipitation products (NRT SPPs) have great potential to supplement the gauge rainfall. However, NRT SPPs have several biases that require corrections before application. As a result, this study investigated two statistical bias correction methods with different parameters for the NRT SPPs and evaluated the adequacy of its application in the Fuji River basin. We employed Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP)-NRT and Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG)-Early for NRT SPPs as well as BTOP model (Block-wise use of the TOPMODEL (Topographic-based hydrologic model)) for flood runoff simulation. The results showed that the corrected SPPs by the 10-day ratio based bias correction method are consistent with the gauge data at the watershed scale. Compared with the original SPPs, the corrected SPPs improved the flood discharge simulation considerably. GSMaP-NRT and IMERG-Early have the potential for hourly river-flow simulation on a basin or large scale after bias correction. These findings can provide references for the applications of NRT SPPs in other basins for flood monitoring and early warning applications. It is necessary to investigate the impact of number of ground observation and their distribution patterns on bias correction and hydrological simulation efficiency, which is the future direction of this study.
