The growing demand for food in terms of quality and quantity has increased the need for industrialization and intensification in the agriculture field. Internet of Things (IoT) is a highly promising technology that is offering many innovative solutions to modernize the agriculture sector. Research institutions and scientific groups are continuously working to deliver solutions and products using IoT to address different domains of agriculture. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) by conducting a survey of IoT technologies and their current utilization in different application domains of the agriculture sector. The underlying SLR has been compiled by reviewing research articles published in well-reputed venues between 2006 and 2019. A total of 67 papers were carefully selected through a systematic process and classified accordingly. The primary objective of this systematic study is the collection of all relevant research on IoT agricultural applications, sensors/devices, communication protocols, and network types. Furthermore, it also discusses the main issues and challenges that are being investigated in the field of agriculture. Moreover, an IoT agriculture framework has been presented that contextualizes the representation of a wide range of current solutions in the field of agriculture. Similarly, country policies for IoT-based agriculture have also been presented. Lastly, open issues and challenges have been presented to provide the researchers promising future directions in the domain of IoT agriculture.

Melanoma remains the most harmful form of skin cancer. Convolutional neural network (CNN) based classifiers have become the best choice for melanoma detection in the recent era. The research has indicated that classifiers based on CNN classify skin cancer images equivalent to dermatologists, which has allowed a quick and life-saving diagnosis. This study provides a systematic literature review of the latest research on melanoma classification using CNN. We restrict our study to the binary classification of melanoma. In particular, this research discusses the CNN classifiers and compares the accuracies of these classifiers when tested on non-published datasets. We conducted a systematic review of existing literature, identifying the literature through a systematic search of the IEEE, Medline, ACM, Springer, Elsevier, and Wiley databases. A total of 5112 studies were identified out of which 55 well-reputed studies were selected. The main objective of this study is to collect state of the art research which identify the recent research trends, challenges and opportunities for melanoma diagnosis and investigate the existing solutions for the diagnosis of melanoma detection using deep learning. Moreover, proposed taxonomy for melanoma detection has been presented that summarizes the broad variety of existing melanoma detection solutions. Lastly, proposed model, challenges and opportunities have been presented which helps the researchers in the domain of melanoma detection.

The federated learning technique (FL) supports the collaborative training of machine learning and deep learning models for edge network optimization. Although a complex edge network with heterogeneous devices having different constraints can affect its performance, this leads to a problem in this area. Therefore, some research can be seen to design new frameworks and approaches to improve federated learning processes. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the FL technique and its applicability in different domains. The key focus of the paper is to produce a systematic literature review of recent research studies that clearly describes the adoption of FL in edge networks. The search procedure was performed from April 2020 to May 2021 with a total initial number of papers being 7546 published in the duration of 2016 to 2020. The systematic literature synthesizes and compares the algorithms, models, and frameworks of federated learning. Additionally, we have presented the scope of FL applications in different industries and domains. It has been revealed after careful investigation of studies that 25% of the studies used FL in IoT and edge-based applications and 30% of studies implement the FL concept in the health industry, 10% for NLP, 10% for autonomous vehicles, 10% for mobile services, 10% for recommender systems, and 5% for FinTech. A taxonomy is also proposed on implementing FL for edge networks in different domains. Moreover, another novelty of this paper is that datasets used for the implementation of FL are discussed in detail to provide the researchers an overview of the distributed datasets, which can be used for employing FL techniques. Lastly, this study discusses the current challenges of implementing the FL technique. We have found that the areas of medical AI, IoT, edge systems, and the autonomous industry can adapt the FL in many of its sub-domains; however, the challenges these domains can encounter are statistical heterogeneity, system heterogeneity, data imbalance, resource allocation, and privacy.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm that is transforming real-world things (objects) into smarter devices. IoT is applicable to a variety of application domains including healthcare, smart grid, and agriculture. This domain has started revolutionizing the agriculture industry by providing smart solutions for precision farming, greenhouse management, and livestock monitoring. This article aims to present a comprehensive survey on the role of IoT in the Livestock field by categorizing and synthesizing existing research work in this area. To this end, a detailed discussion has been provided on IoT network infrastructure, topologies and platforms employed for livestock management. In addition, a list of communication protocols and connections of IoT-based livestock systems with relevant technologies have also been explored. Furthermore, numerous IoT-based livestock monitoring, controlling, and tracking applications have been discussed. Apart from this, it also analyses distinct security issues in IoT-based livestock field and developed a collaborative security model to detect and minimize the security risk. Lastly, pertinent open research challenges in the domain of IoT-based livestock management have been presented with future research directions.

The greenhouse is one of the sustainable forms of smart agricultural farming. It is considered as an alternate method to overcome the food crisis which is generated due to high population growth, climate change, and environmental pollution. Although this method supports off-the-season crops within the enclosed area even in severe climatic zones. It has required to efficiently control and manage the crop parameters at greenhouse in a more precise and secure way. The advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT) has introduced smart solutions to automate the greenhouse farming parameters such as plant monitoring, internal atmosphere control, and irrigation control. The survey presents a hierarchy on the major components of IoT-based greenhouse farming. A rigorous discussion on greenhouse farming techniques, IoT-based greenhouse categories, network technologies (cloud/edge computing, IoT protocols, data analytics, sensors) has been presented. Furthermore, a detailed discussion on mobile-based greenhouse applications and IoT applications has been presented to manage the greenhouse farm. Moreover, the success stories and statistical analysis of some agricultural countries have been presented to standardize the IoT-based greenhouse farming. Lastly, the open issues and research challenges related to IoT-enabled greenhouse farming has been presented with state-of-the-art future research directions.
